Hedera helix Bonsai Seed Common Name: English Ivy Hedera is a genus of the family Araliaceae. English Ivy is an evergreen climbing plant, growing to m high where suitable surfaces (trees, cliffs, walls) are available, and also growing as a ground cover where there are no vertical surfaces. It climbs by means of aerial rootlets which cling to the substrate. The leaves are 5–10cm long and are arranged alternately along the stems. There are two types of leaves. The juvenile leaves are palmately five-lobed on creeping and climbing stems, and unlobed cordate adult leaves on fertile flowering stems exposed to full sun, usually high in the crowns of trees or the top of rock faces. The flowers are produced from late summer until late autumn, individually small, in 3–5 cm diameter umbels, greenish-yellow, and very rich in nectar, an important late autumn food source for bees and other insects. The fruit are purple-black to orange-yellow berries 6–8 mm in diameter, ripening in late winter, and are an important food for many birds. It is happy in full sun to semi-shade and will even grow in deep shade. It is only suitable for regions without severe frost and in drier areas one should provide additional water. It requires well-draining, compost-enriched soil and will love you if you apply a complete fertiliser once every six months. The bid amount is for 1 Seed We'll supply you with all the germination & care instructions plus a FREE e-book with everything you'll ever need to know about the art of bonsai.

The Alnus genus commonly known as Alder belongs to the birch family Betulaceae. The genus comprises about 30 species of monoecious trees and shrubs, a few reaching a large size, distributed throughout the North Temperate Zone with a few species extending into Central America and the northern Andes. The catkins of some alder species have a degree of edibility, and may be rich in protein. Reported to have a bitter and unpleasant taste, they are more useful for survival purposes.            The wood of certain alder species is often used to smoke various food items, especially salmon and other seafood. Alnus cordata is a handsome, fast-growing large tree, sometimes seen in parks and gardens. It also makes a beautiful bonsai specimen. The Italian Alder is often regarded as the finest of the species. Native to southern Italy, the Italian Alder has an attractive conical shape, providing good winter interest, and glossy leaves. Its tolerance of both a wide range of soils and of urban pollution makes it a useful tree for the reclamation of derelict sites as well as a specimen tree for parks and woodland. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, including chalk, the Italian Alder also does well on compacted urban sites and derelict land. It copes well with pollution in towns, and its resistance to wind makes it useful for screening and hedges.

Alnus glutinosa is a popular tree of moist to wet soils. Commonly known as Black Alder it is a moderate to fast-growing deciduous tree that usually grows to 12m to 15m in height with a 6m to 12m spread and a 30cm to 45cm trunk but is capable of reaching 24m in height in the woods. Pyramidal when young, Black Alder often has multiple stems, making it ideal for use as a screen or bonsai specimen, the trees eventually becoming more rounded or oval as they mature. The two- to four-inch-wide, dark green, roundish leaves with toothed edges and pale undersides are joined in spring by rather insignificant male and female flowers. Foliage remains green well into autumn. It is the fruits that are most interesting—small, nutlike, 2.5cm "cones" that persist throughout autumn and winter, long after the darkening leaves have fallen. These fruits, along with the attractive, dark brown, furrowed bark and multi-stemmed growth habit, make Black Alder an attractive landscape specimen throughout the winter. The fruits are food for a variety of wildlife.

Ficus is a pan-tropical genus of about 850 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes and hemiepiphytes in the family Moraceae. Ficus occupies a wide variety of ecological niches; most are evergreen, but some deciduous species are endemic to areas outside of the tropics and to higher elevations. Fig species are characterized by their unique inflorescence and distinctive pollination syndrome, which utilizes wasp species belonging to the Agaonidae family for pollination. The fruit of most species are edible though they are usually of only local economic importance or eaten as bushfood. However, they are extremely important food resources for wildlife. Figs are also of considerable cultural importance throughout the tropics, both as objects of worship and for their many practical uses.            Ficus salicifolia commonly known as the Wonderboom Fig, Wonderboom-vy, Narrow Leaf or Willow Leaf Fig has small, narrow leaves that produce excellent branch ramification. It is capable of producing good basal roots and excellent aerial root formation in humid conditions. It is an evergreen tree indigenous to South Africa with a provincial distribution that extends to Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West. It grows especially on outcrops, rocky hillsides and along cliffs fringing water courses and may rarely grow up to 10 m tall, and acquire a leafy spreading crown. It is named after the Wonderboom grove in Pretoria, that has spread from a central bole that was carbon dated to about a 1,000 years old. The Wonderboom is an extraordinary specimen for its size and structure, and its drooping branches are continuing to root and form new trees. It makes a very attractive bonsai.

The relatively large edible figs of the broom cluster fig are produced around September and ripen around December and are readily eaten by local people when they turn pinkish and soft. Fig jam (or preserve) can also be made from the fruits. Local people claim that the fruits which form on the roots are the sweetest. The wood is used as a base by bushmen as part of the equipment necessary when igniting fire by friction. In modern times this tree is used most extensively as a shade tree. It makes a very attractive bonsai. It is believed to have magical powers and is used in many rituals by local people.
