Baden-Powell,  by a veteran of the First Boer War of 1881.   This item is an ORIGINAL period piece,  hand written around 1900 - dedicated to praising the exploits of Col. Baden-Powell in his defence of Mafikeng by the besieging Boer forces. The author has penned multiple short poems, in which he promotes Baden-Powell as the epitome of British stoicism in the face of adversity. References are made to the Boer General Cronje, describing him in a non-flattering manner.   Baden-Powell's gallant defence of the town is noted as being worthy of the Victoria Cross as seen fit by an individual who once fought against the Boer forces 20 years prior.   A personalised and reflective item - which captures the essence of British public opinion during 1900, as the course of the conflict was unfolding. A Copper Dish Showing the Boer War General, Lord Roberts. Made of copper taken from HMS Foudroyant after the ship was scrapped in 1897. The  Foudroyant served Admiral Nelson as his flagship between 1799 and 1801. Pressed copper with ornate cut-out design. The medallion-like impression of Roberts is thus incused at the back. The inscription: "FOUDROYANT COPPER" was stamped after the dish had been pressed. Diameter 11.7 cm. Diameter of base 6.0 cm. Height 2.0 cm. Weight 47 gm. Darkened with age and a few green verdigris spots. Rim slightly bent in places.
