BOER WAR DISH SHOWING GENERAL ROBERTS, MADE OF COPPER FROM IN SOUTH AFRICA
A Copper Dish Showing the Boer War General, Lord Roberts. Made of copper taken from HMS Foudroyant after the ship was scrapped in 1897. The Foudroyant served Admiral Nelson as his flagship between 1799 and 1801. Pressed copper with ornate cut-out design. The medallion-like impression of Roberts is thus incused at the back. The inscription: "FOUDROYANT COPPER" was stamped after the dish had been pressed. Diameter 11.7 cm. Diameter of base 6.0 cm. Height 2.0 cm. Weight 47 gm. Darkened with age and a few green verdigris spots. Rim slightly bent in places.
