 Boer War: Handwritten Letter with Poems dedicated to Col. Baden-Powell,  by a veteran of the First Boer War of 1881.   This item is an ORIGINAL period piece,  hand written around 1900 - dedicated to praising the exploits of Col. Baden-Powell in his defence of Mafikeng by the besieging Boer forces. The author has penned multiple short poems, in which he promotes Baden-Powell as the epitome of British stoicism in the face of adversity. References are made to the Boer General Cronje, describing him in a non-flattering manner.   Baden-Powell's gallant defence of the town is noted as being worthy of the Victoria Cross as seen fit by an individual who once fought against the Boer forces 20 years prior.   A personalised and reflective item - which captures the essence of British public opinion during 1900, as the course of the conflict was unfolding.
