Cape Landscapes: Sir John Herschel's Sketches 1834-1838 Hard Cover First Edition 2006 In 1834, Sir John Herschel, perhaps the most celebrated astronomer of his time, arrived at the Cape of Good Hope to spend four years observing the southern sky. Among his many other talents he was an accomplished artist, skilled in the use of an optical device known as a camera lucida. During these four years Herschel produced more than a hundred exquisite landscape sketches, some depicting the Feldhausen estate in the suburb of Wynberg, where he and his family lived, others meticulously recording scenes that enlivened his trips to Cape Point, to Table Mountain, to Hout Bay and to places in the farther reaches. Among the latter were Caledon, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl. These Herschel landscape drawings are an almost unmatched contribution to the artistic and historical record of the Cape in the early nineteenth century. They are reproduced in this title, together with a narrative text and background material that firmly set the illustrations in their social and geographical context. The result is an evocative picture of the Cape Peninsula and its environs at a time when they were still largely wild, but beginning to develop agriculturally and culturally in directions that culminated in the late Victorian period Cape Landscapes UCT Press A compilation of Sir John Herschel’s camera lucida landscape sketches (1834–1838). These drawings, together with a narrative text and background are an almost unmatched contribution to the artistic and historical record of the Cape in the early nineteenth century.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days From 1972 to 1991, Eleanor Antin (born 1935) created multiple personae of different genders, races, professions, historical contexts and geographic locations. The artist called this motley group--which includes a deposed king, an exiled film director, ambitious ballerinas and hard-working nurses--her "selves." The selves' manifestations were as diverse as their stories: some were embodied by Antin and captured in photographs and on video; others had paper doll surrogates; at times their existence was known only through the drawings, texts and films they had ostensibly left behind. As she explored the fleeting nature of the self, Antin used fiction, fantasy and theatricality to examine the ways that history takes shape, scrutinizing the role that visual representation plays in that process. Multiple Occupancy: Eleanor Antin's "Selves" is the first project to focus exclusively on this critical body of work. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days The artists of the influential Rorstrand porcelain factory in Sweden created some of the most beautiful decorative objects of the Art Nouveau style. In his fascinating and authoritative text, Bengt Nystrom focuses on the Rorstrand factory's designers and their revolutionary forms during the period 1865 to 1915, when the firm successfully competed artistically with Tiffany and Galle in the great international expositions that showcased and helped to propagate the Art Nouveau style. Inspired by late 19th-century crafts movements fathered by William Morris, the artists of the Rorstrand factory took nationalistic pride in incorporating their indigenous flora and fauna into their exquisite designs, transforming wintry berry springs and northern sea creatures into elegant three-dimensional works of art that appealed to a sophisticated European clientele. Illustrated with objects from Robert Schreiber's outstanding collection, supplemented with craftsmen's drawings and archival documents, Nystrom's thoroughly researched text includes engaging glimpses of the culture surrounding Rorstrand (a former castle), especially the close-knit community of insightful administrators, talented designers and inventors, and artisans. The book chronicles not only the company's artistic achievements but the day-to-day personalities and decisions behind the emergence of this once-utilitarian factory as the birthplace of some of Sweden's most beautiful decorative objects. Features Summary At the turn of the twentieth century, the artists of the Swedish Rorstrand porcelain factory created some of the most beautiful decorative objects of the Art Nouveau period... COBRA (or CoBrA) was a European avant-garde movement active from 1948 to 1951. This international movement of artists who worked experimentally evolved from the criticisms of Western society and a common desire to break away from existing art movements, including "detested" naturalism and "sterile" abstraction. Their working method was based on spontaneity and experiment, and they drew their inspiration in particular from children’s drawings, from primitive art forms and from the work of Paul Klee and Joan Miró. Softcover edition of an excellent analysis of the Group's sculpture by noted Cobra historian Willlemijn Stokvis, published by the Cobra Museum voor Modernr Kunst, 1998. 175 pages. Illustrated throughout. TEXT IS IN DUTCH. Very good condition with some handling marks to pages. Tracked postage is R60.00.
