In these times of economic uncertainty and reduced customer expenditure, ensuring that the consumer's wants and needs are met, forms part of the strategic planning of all organisations - big or small. Consumers, by means of their buying behaviour, exert influence on businesses and compel them to act in certain ways. Understanding consumer behaviour is therefore imperative, as it provides information to businesses on how to plan their marketing activities and sustain themselves as commercially viable and useful entities. In Trauma counselling: Principles and practice in South Africa today, a team of academics and practitioners have compiled a hands-on, yet theoretically grounded and evidence-based South African textbook on counselling victims of trauma. The first part of this publication focuses on the range of potentially traumatic events that commonly occur in South Africa. It clearly describes themes related to traumatic events and traumatic stress and introduces the basic principles of trauma counselling. This section also focuses on how traumatic stress may manifest in different client groups. The second part aims to familiarise students with a range of strategies suitable for trauma counselling, such as brief interventions, cognitive behaviour therapy, the narrative approach, strength-based interventions and integrated or alternative approaches. The final chapter is a personal one, in which the authors reflect on the lessons they have learnt from their own practice and the techniques they have developed to protect themselves from vicarious trauma. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 13 working days It probably took a fraction of a second from the knock - a single bang - to the opening of the door and the entry of an unexpected visitor into the room. They had just finished their lunch. The unannounced visitor...simply pretended that everything was normal. There he stood - unfazed and somehow gigantic in his presence. The room had suddenly been invaded by a man who was to be a landmark in the lives of the trainees... The book opens in China, 1962. Andrew Mlangeni is one of a small select group undergoing military training. The unannounced visitor is Mao Tse-Tung. While still at school, Andrew Mlangeni joined the Communist Party of South Africa and also the ANC Youth League. These were the organisations that shaped his values. Decades of resourceful activism were to lead to his arrest and life sentence in the Rivonia trial. Mlangeni's lifelong commitment to the struggle for liberation reverberates with other biographies of leading figures. His perspective comes from a somewhat ambiguous position in the hierarchy of liberation leaders. Mlangeni was selected as one of the first-ever six members who received military training in China before the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe. He seems to have been chosen because he was a dedicated, intelligent and dependable operative, rather than a leader. Even after his release after 25 years on Robben Island, Mlangeni was not given a senior position in the post-apartheid democratic government. 'I was always the backroom boy,' says Andrew Mlangeni about himself. This story of an ANC elder is a rigorously researched historical record overlaid with intensely personal reflections which intersect with the political narrative. Above all, it is one man's story, set in the maelstrom of the liberation struggle. This biographical project has been developed for, and published in conjunction with, the June and Andrew Mlangeni Foundation. Features Summary Andrew Mlangeni is one of a small select group undergoing military training. The unannounced visitor is Mao Tse-Tung. While still at school, Andrew Mlangeni joined the Communist Party of South Africa and also the ANC Youth League. A scientific safari and a personal memoir celebrating the enigmatic dignity of the worlds' largest land animal. As a child in South Africa, spending summers exploring the wild with his boyhood friends, Lyall Watson came face to face with his first elephant. From that moment on, Watson's fascination grew into a lifelong obsession with understanding the nature and behaviour of this impressive creature, Around he world, the elephant - at once a symbol of spiritual power and physical endurance - has been worshipped as a god and hunted for sport. In this portrait of the elephant, the author draws from scientific research, anthropological studies, and personal experience to document the animal's wide-ranging capabilities to remember and to mourn; and he reminds us of its rich mythic origins, its evolution, and its devastation in recent history. Part meditation on an elusive animal, part evocation of the power of place.

Ladysmith By Ruari Chisholm First Edition 1979 | Published by Osprey Publishing Limited, London B & W photos, maps and drawings included. Book condition: Hardcover with dust jacket intact (very slightly worn). Page edges slightly marked.  On New Year's Eve in1899, as the rest of the world celebrated the sawn of a new century, British eyes were focused firmly on the obscure town Ladysmith in South Africa, where the Anglo Boer War was at its height. There, 12 000 of the cream of Britain's regular army were besieged by a force Boer burghers, far inferior in number and resources but determined to inflict a shattering blow on British imperial ambitions. The string of defeats they had already meted out to the battle-hardened troops of one of the world's undoubted super powers had proved their firmness of purpose and stunned both the British and foreign observers alike.  This epic siege, which lasted from October 1899 to early March 1900, and the story of the battles to bring about Ladysmith's eventual relief, is the theme of this enthralling book. Utilising much hitherto unpublished information from contemporary sources in both Britain and South Africa, Ruari Chisholm tells the complete story of the campaign. He sees it not only as a military affair consisting of battles, bombardments, attacks and counter attacks, but also as a case study of human behaviour, Boer and British, solider and civilian.
