Paperback. English. Spearhead Books. 2000. In fair/good condition. The seed that grew into this guide was planted twenty years before it was published in the newspaper archives of Rhodes University, South Africa. As a journalism student the author was leafing through an old newspaper researching an assignment when he was struck dumb by a cartoon that, in just a few brushes, conveyed more than he could ever hope to write on the subject. This drawing of South Africa's political battlelines has produced not only a fascinating and informative look at the world of South Africa's political cartoons, but also at South African politics and journalism - a world cartoons portray in a way words cannot. Every day most major newspapers carry a cartoon comment on some topical subject or event- mostly political in nature. The reader's reaction to this supposedly humorous comment may vary from a wry smile to an agreeable full belly laugh, from outrage to righteous indignation.;What the reactions have in common is that they are emotional rather than reasoned responses that mask the messages in the cartoons. In Penpricks not only are the messages revealed, but at the same time the reader will glimpse South African politics from the other side of the mirror that the South African press holds up to its unique society.

What are the most significant developments political, social, economic in South Africa since 1994? How much has changed since the demise of apartheid, and how much remains stubbornly the same? Should one celebrate a robust democracy now two decades old, or lament the corrosive effects on political life of factionalism, greed and corruption? This book tries to answer such questions, and does so by avoiding simplistic or one-sided assessments of life under Mandela, Mbeki and Zuma. It recognises real advances under ANC rule, but it also identifies the limits and contradictions of such progress. It shows, too, how the country's past permeates the present, complicating and constraining the politics of transition, so that genuine transformation has been short-changed. Author Colin Bundy ISBN 1431408891, 9781431408894 Format Paperback Pages 176p

1993. Soft cover, 194 pages. Very good condition. Tightly bound, neat and clean. Under 1kg. A black South African and a veteran reporter for the Reuters news service, Mkhondo offers a fair-minded account of his country's "reluctant but inevitable transition to democracy". Mkhondo seems to have been everywhere, and his book is a useful blow-by-blow report on political talks and the violence that has erupted in their shadow. He includes solid mini-profiles of President F. W. de Klerk, African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela and Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Mkhondo's personal asides and reports are the most interesting part of the book. Some of the township violence takes place in his neighborhood, and Mkhondo conveys the anguish of seeing an old friend brutally slain. When white right-wingers invade negotiations, the author himself is assaulted. Despite South Africa's violence, political intolerance and shaky economy, Mkhondo professes a tempered optimism for the future. Photos not seen by PW.
