Juta, 1906 Hardcover without dustjacket. There is sunning to the spine and age related markings to the boards. Endpapers have age toning as can be expected. Excerpt from History of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of South Africa This is a simple history of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of South Africa, and also of the Methodist Missions in the Transvaal and Rhodesia which are under the control of the British Wesleyan Missionary Society. I am convinced that there is still a rich mine of Methodist lore in South Africa awaiting the research of the skilful explorer. I have only been able to scratch the surface. The preliminary chapters on the origin of British Methodism are intended for South African readers, who may not have easy access to the standard works on the subject. I am indebted to many ministers and laymen for information and photographs, to all of whom I tender my grateful acknowledgments; but my special thanks are due to the Rev. F. Mason for permission to use his valuable notes on Natal Methodism, published in the South African Methodist, and also to the Rev. T. Chubb, B.A., for his careful revision of the proof sheets.

(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) There is a paradox about Africa: it remains a subject that attracts considerable attention yet rarely is there a full appreciation of its complexity. African historiography has typically consisted of writing Africa for Europe-instead of writing Africa for itself, as itself, from its own perspectives. The History of Africa redresses this by letting the perspectives of Africans themselves take center stage. Authoritative and comprehensive, this book provides a wide-ranging history of Africa from earliest prehistory to the present day-using the cultural, social, political, and economic lenses of Africa as instruments to illuminate the ordinary lives of Africans. The result is a fresh survey that includes a wealth of indigenous ideas, African concepts, and traditional outlooks that have escaped the writing of African history in the West. The new edition includes information on the Arab Spring, the rise of FrancAfrica, the presence of the Chinese in Africa, and the birth of South Sudan. The chapters go up to the present day, addressing US President Barack Obama's policies toward Africa. A new companion website provides students and scholars of Africa with access to a wealth of supporting resources for each chapter, including images, video and audio clips, and links to sites for further research. This straightforward, illustrated, and factual text allows the reader to access the major developments, personalities, and events on the African continent. This groundbreaking survey is an indispensable guide to African history. Format:Paperback Pages:436

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Are antisemitism and white supremacy manifestations of a general phenomenon? Why didn't racism appear in Europe before the fourteenth century, and why did it flourish as never before in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries? Why did the twentieth century see institutionalized racism in its most extreme forms? Why are egalitarian societies particularly susceptible to virulent racism? What do apartheid South Africa, Nazi Germany, and the American South under Jim Crow have in common? How did the Holocaust advance civil rights in the United States? With a rare blend of learning, economy, and cutting insight, George Fredrickson surveys the history of Western racism from its emergence in the late Middle Ages to the present. Beginning with the medieval antisemitism that put Jews beyond the pale of humanity, he traces the spread of racist thinking in the wake of European expansionism and the beginnings of the African slave trade. And he examines how the Enlightenment and nineteenth-century romantic nationalism created a new intellectual context for debates over slavery and Jewish emancipation. Fredrickson then makes the first sustained comparison between the color-coded racism of nineteenth-century America and the antisemitic racism that appeared in Germany around the same time. He finds similarity enough to justify the common label but also major differences in the nature and functions of the stereotypes invoked. The book concludes with a provocative account of the rise and decline of the twentieth century's overtly racist regimes--the Jim Crow South, Nazi Germany, and apartheid South Africa--in the context of world historical developments. This illuminating work is the first to treat racism across such a sweep of history and geography. It is distinguished not only by its original comparison of modern racism's two most significant varieties--white supremacy and antisemitism--but also by its eminent readability. The OFSTED report on school history suggests that the current generation of A Level students have been poorly served by exam-based textbooks which spoon-feed students while failing to enthuse them or develop deeper understanding of History. The Schools History Project has risen to this challenge with a new series for the next generation. Enquiring History is SHP's fresh approach to Advanced Level History that aims: - To motivate and engage readers - To help readers think and gain independence as learners- To encourage enquiry, and deeper understanding of periods and the people of the past- To engage with current scholarship - To prepare A Level students for university.Key features of each Student book:- Clear compelling narrative - books are designed to be read cover to cover- Structured enquiries - that explore the core content and issues of each period- 'Insights' (Feature panels between enquiries) provide context, overview, and extension - Full colour illustrations throughout. The Russian RevolutionThis title examines Russian history from 1894-1924 - the stories, settings, characters and issues that make this such an extraordinarily important and popular topic.
