Richard Byrd is renowned for his polar explorations, but his experiences as sole occupant of a Antarctic weather station during the winter of 1934 is relatively little known. It is, in fact, a book he was reluctant to write, because he did not want to relive the dangers, the isolation, the near death from illness and cold of the five months at the station, 250 miles from his companions at Little America. This is a compelling story of determination, self-sufficiency, loneliness, struggle to survive and the resilience of the inner-self. First published in 1938, this 1958 edition with foreword by Sir John Hunt. Photo's available on request.
