One keen Half Life player decided to do just that, but when he showed Valve, Half Life's developers, they were so stunned that they have released it as a standalone game. Based, therefore, on the Half Life engine, this game has all the intensity of Aliens vs Predator, the storyline of Half Life and the AI of Soldier of Fortune, showing them that Gunman Chronicles is how a game should be don. With the introduction of some new weapons, the ability to drive vehicles and dinosaurs roaming the countryside, you've got a game that takes the mantle forward for Valve. The storyline, like Half Life, is very consuming and you can easily get sucked in to the realm that is The Gunman Chronicles. Although the game has some great niceties, like dinosaurs that attack you or the bad guys while you are in the middle of a fire fight--very handy if they eat them rather than you--the games weapon system can be at times slightly awkward to the unfamiliar player. While most games offer a secondary fire to weapons, Gunman Chronicles tries to take this a step further by offering three of four. Options-wise, this is great, but you can't help but feel that an extra hand would come in handy sometimes to access the additional weapons. Putting this minor point aside, if you are a fan of Half Life or the first-person shooter--and lets face it, who isn't?--then Gunman Chronicles is going to be right up your street for the next big challenge. If, though, the genre is slightly unfamiliar to you, although a great place to start, a better option would be to try something a little less complicated, like Half Life and work your way up. -- Stuart Miles

The Wheel of Time (U) --with a storyline that's a prequel to the series--holds a combination of action and strategy that mirrors Robert Jordan's bestselling books. Similar to the series, the Dark One has broken out of his prison--this time held by four seals--and you must find a way to seal him away again. You play Elayna--in single player mode--and fight to find the missing seals. Multiplayer allows the use of the Portal Stones and Ter'angreal and introduces more intricate character development. The graphics are good, and you get the chance to personally explore the White Tower, Shadar Logoth, the Fortress of the Forsaken and the Outpost of the Children of the Light--four locations that determine your success in the game. You will not be able to play as Rand, or fight Padon Fain, although there are some surprise appearances by certain characters! The main character of Shenmue is Ryo Hazuki, a hard-working college student who has been knocked sideways by the death of his father and swears vengeance as he sets off in search of the killers. Although the story sounds familiar, Shenmue differs through its execution. Everything from the finely tuned opening sequence to the interactivity with the 500 or so characters is nothing short of superb. But beware, this is no pick-and-play game. Shenmue comes on three packed discs, with a further disc for extra features and Internet options allowing the game to boast over 250 hours of gameplay. Couple this with the rumours that this is, in fact, part one of a trilogy and you've got an epic on your hands. The game boasts distinctive time settings: different things happen during the day and night. Knock on someone's door during the day and they are likely to be out; visit the local shop in the evening you'll probably find it closed. But it's not all talking to old people and children in an attempt to find the bad guys. Shenmue offers the chance to get into fights, race a motor bike and interact with everything and anything. This game is a slow-burner, rising to an epic crescendo at the end. It's not Crazy Taxi or Resident Evil but something far greater, something almost compelling so that, although you know you're going to do a lot of walking around searching, you can't help but blindly carry on. -- Stuart Miles
