BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS x 2 =  BOER WAR = NATAL WAR ZULU WAR = NATAL NATIVE CONTINGENT = 2nd PHOTO. Copyright local History Museum   he Anglo-Zulu war was fought in 1879 between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. Following Lord Carnarvon's successful introduction of Federation in Canada, it was thought that similar political effort, coupled with military campaigns, might succeed with the African kingdoms, tribal areas and Boer Republics in South Africa. In 1874, Sir Henry Bartle Frere was sent to South Africa as High Commissioner for the British Empire to bring such plans into being. Among the obstacles were the presence of the independent states of the South African Republic and the Kingdom of Zululand and its army. Frere, on his own initiative, without the approval of the British government and with the intent of instigating a war with the Zulu, had presented an ultimatum on 11 December 1878, to the Zulu king Cetshawyo with which the Zulu king could not comply, including disbanding his army and abandoning key cultural traditions.   Bartle Frere then sent Lord Chelmsford  to invade Zululand after this ultimatum was not met.  The war is notable for several particularly bloody battles, including an opening victory of the Zulu at the Battle of Isandlwana, followed by the defeat of a large Zulu army at Rorke's Drift  by a small force of British troops. The war eventually resulted in a British victory and the end of the Zulu nation's dominance of the region.   Sold as seen in the images.   BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPH =  BOER WAR = NATAL WAR   On 16 September 1864, the Alexandra Troop of the Wanganui Cavalry Volunteers was accepted for service by the New Zealand Government. The troop was named after Princess Alexandra, the Princess of Wales. The troop saw active service in the New Zealand Wars, mainly on patrolling and despatch riding duties, before being disbanded in late 1865. Reformed as the Alexandra Cavalry Volunteers, the troop guarded Wanganui during the Titokowaru campaign (1868), and took part in the Parihaka operation (1881). In 1868, Trooper William Lingard, a founding member of the Alexandra Troop, won the New Zealand Cross for rescuing a comrade under enemy fire at Titokowaru's pa at Tauranga Ika. In 1897 the unit was renamed the Alexandra Mounted Rifles. Volunteers from Alexandra Mounted Rifles served in South Africa during the Boer War, where Farrier Sergeant Major William James Hardham won the Victoria Cross at Naauwpoort, in January 1901, where he rescued a wounded comrade while under heavy enemy fire. In 1911 the unit became the 2nd (Wellington West Coast) Mounted Rifles.     Sold as seen in the images. Images form part of the description.

Rare Boer War/Zulu War Brass Field Tourniquet I came across this amazing find privately many years ago, it was supposedly picked up on one of the battlefields. I haven’t cleaned or polished it because I think it’s important to keep it as it was found. Due to its age, the belt must have rotted away but the device still turns. It is stamped on the top ‘SAVIGNY & CO. LONDON’. For some interesting information on the field tourniquet click on the link below. https://ageofrevolution.org/surgeons-blade-field-tourniquet/ If outside South Africa please contact me regarding payment and postage before bidding. Please email any queries. If you think the description in my listing is incorrect, please email me. The photograph you are viewing in this listing is the actual item for sale. Hardcover with laminated boards. Written by John Laband, published by University of Natal Press, 2001. 140 pages. Tracked postage is R60.00. The Later Zulu wars of the 1880s were a last-ditch resistance to colonialism combined with bitter civil war, and their consequences proved more devastating for the Zulu people than the famous Anglo-Zulu war of 1879.  They took place at a time of changing fighting methods and tactics for both the British and the Zulu - the last time the British Army went on campaign wearing scarlet was in Zululand in 1888. This book explains the nature of the diverse Zulu, British and Boer military forces fighting in Zululand, and the ways in which the British and the Boers fostered and exploited divisions among the Zulu people in order to maintain colonial control. The author's research (supported by detailed maps) traces the complex series of wars and battles in Zululand during the 1880s. He places the campaigns in their historical context and assesses their broader significance.

It is May 1983. The UMR is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its Headquarters, the UMR Hall, in Greytown. A medal parade, civic dinner and a number of other events are on the programme. The members of the Unit are upbeat and enthusiastic and look forward to all the activities. There is an officers meeting in the old UMR Hall. On the agenda the Unit's history going forward from 1975 when the last edition was published. A decision is taken to appoint a senior officer (Maj. L. Palmer) to commence working on the History project. The idea is to begin collecting material, articles and photographs, interviewing the older ex-members and Comrades of the Unit, collecting anecdotes and any other related information. The years passed and the work load increased as time went on. The one man project became a 4 member committee and members came and went. Cmdt. John Allchin took over the project. Under his direction the work continued until in, 2004, there was enough progress to appoint a professional scribe to put it all together. Mark Coghlan of the Pietermaritzburg Museum, a person of great experience and insight into military history in KwaZulu-Natal, was approached and accepted the assignment;  To draft, collate and produce the History of the UMR 1864 to 2004. The rest is history, the culmination of over 20-odd years of hard but fulfilling work. As the reader turns the pagers of this document, the history of the illustrious UMR will unfold before his/her very eyes, and the reader will be taken for the ride of a lifetime. The ride starts with a small band of 45 cavalry volunteers in Greytown and ends with a modern Armoured Car Regiment, a compliment of 254 trained men and women, equipped with Rooikat armoured vehicles and a modern and functional headquarters at Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal. The Umvoti Mounted Rifles is the second oldest Regiment in the South African National Defence Force. It was 150 years old on 16 May 2014. The regiment fought gallantly and with honour in the South African (Zulu) War of 1879; The South Africa (Anglo Boer) War of 1899 -1902; Natal (Bambata) Rebellion of 1906; South West Africa (First world War) 1914-1915 and Gibbon, Western Desert (Second World War) 1941-1943. The Regiment stands proud as the only active Armoured Car Regiment in KwaZulu-Natal, and is ready to serve the South African National Defence Force, The Country and its People, where and whenever called upon to do so. Hardcover, 795 pages. Published October 2012
