Following Lord Carnarvon's successful introduction of Federation in Canada, it was thought that similar political effort, coupled with military campaigns, might succeed with the African kingdoms, tribal areas and Boer Republics in South Africa. In 1874, Sir Henry Bartle Frere was sent to South Africa as High Commissioner for the British Empire to bring such plans into being. Among the obstacles were the presence of the independent states of the South African Republic and the Kingdom of Zululand and its army. Frere, on his own initiative, without the approval of the British government and with the intent of instigating a war with the Zulu, had presented an ultimatum on 11 December 1878, to the Zulu king Cetshawyo with which the Zulu king could not comply, including disbanding his army and abandoning key cultural traditions.   Bartle Frere then sent Lord Chelmsford  to invade Zululand after this ultimatum was not met.  The war is notable for several particularly bloody battles, including an opening victory of the Zulu at the Battle of Isandlwana, followed by the defeat of a large Zulu army at Rorke's Drift  by a small force of British troops. The Anglo-Zulu war of 1879 was perhaps subjected to much controversy as a result of the epic Zulu victory at the battle of Isandlwana.  Lord Chelmsford, the General Officer commanding the invasion force during the war, sustained severe criticism from both journalists and parliament following his actions and conduct at Isandlwana. In 1939 and on the sixtieth anniversary of the battle, Major, the Hon Gerald French, wrote a controversial but riveting book titled 'Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu War, which is based on defending both Lord Chelmsford's actions and reputation.  The foreword to the book was written by General Sir Bindon Blood who served under Chelmsford in India and a devoted admirer. French however, had fallen into the error of selective inaccurate source material and false reports that were, at the time, specifically designed to shield Lord Chelmsford from the Isandlwana debacle and conveniently lay such blame on the shoulders of Colonel Anthony Durnford, Royal Engineers, who was present at Isandlwana.  For example, in looking for such evidence, French deliberately altered a map that showed the true disposition of the imperial defense line at the battle in order for readers to reach the conclusion that the primary course of the defeat was the retreat of the Natal Native Contingent, that opened a gap in the defense, thus allowing an unopposed Zulu advance. There are tears, buttons and insignia missing, scuff marks and other damage. I do not want the buyer to find any "surprises" upon receiving the parcel, so consider the condition rather as "poor" and bid accordingly. The water bottles are made of foam and the helmets, one without inner straps, from plastic. These uniforms and kit we apparently used with the making of the film "Zulu Dawn" in 1979, the battle at Isandlwana  between Zulu and Brit. The uniforms and kit would be ideal for use in re- enactment shows. The size of the uniforms are small. The one jacket has a tear and no buttons. The long pants are badly torn at the crotch. The parcel can be sent with SAPO (at buyers own risk) at a cost of R85. Postnet should be in the region of R130. Drawing on the archives of the National Army Museum, this book recreates the harsh reality of the Anglo-Zulu War - one of the most dramatic campaigns in British History. The Zulus were a fiercely independent and extremely brave warrior race. When the might of the British army was defeated by this indigenous foe at Isandlwana in 1879, it sent shock waves throughout the Empire - 1300 British troops and their African allies were killed. In the aftermath, Zulu reserves mounted a raid on a British border post at Rorke's Drift, which was held by just 145 men. After ten hours of ferocious fighting the Zulus were driven away. Eventually superior weaponry carried the day for the British, (though not before the exiled French prince, Louis Napoleon, was killed in skirmish). Invading Zululand, the British took the capital of Ulundi and 5000 British defeated 20,000 Zulus. King Cetewayo was captured and the war was over. Ian Knight draws on a host of previously unpublished letters and diaries, from ordinary soldiers to the British commander-in-chief, to bring this war to life - one which saw great acts of bravery an courage on both sides.

Interest in KwaZulu-Natals battlefields especially those of the Anglo-Zulu War has soared since the film Zulu first screened in 1964, followed by Zulu Dawn in 1979 (the centenary of the Anglo-Zulu War). During the centenary, the famous battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift were made tourist-friendly by the then Natal Provincial Administration and controls were put in place by the heritage authorities to prevent relics from being plundered. Supported by effective marketing from the Battlefield Route Association and the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Tourism Authority, the battlefields have become a must-see. Indeed, Rorkes Drift has become a tourist icon. Specialist battlefield guides have been trained and are considered to be among the best in the world. New hotels and lodges have been built with battlefield tourism resulting in the creation of an estimated 7,500 permanent jobs in what is termed the Battlefield Region.  There are, of course, many more Anglo-Zulu War sites to be seen: Discovering the Battlefields will enable visitors to find them and to read an account that is not too lengthy yet has sufficient content to bring it to life.
