Young Mandela Nelson Mandela is the world's greatest idol. He has been mythologised as a flawless hero of the liberation struggle. But how exactly did his early personal and political life shape the triumphs to come? This book goes behind the myth to find the man who people have forgotten or never knew - Young Mandela, the commited freedom fighter, who left his wife and children behind to go on the run from the police in the early 1960s. For the first time, we have evidence of a specific personal motivation for Mandela's fight against apartheid, and the book sheds light on the significant extent to which Mandela relied on white activists - a part of South African history the ANC has ignored or tried to bury. Mandela's historic achievements came with a heavy price - this biography graphically describes the emotional turmoil he left in his wake. After meticulous research, and taking a lead from Mandela's trusted circle, the author discovers much that is new, with many surprising, sometimes shocking details that will enhance our understanding of the world's elder statesman. Sanctified, lionised, it turns out that Mandela is a human being after all, only too aware of his flaws and shortcomings. With unique access to people and papers, culminating in a meeting with Nelson Mandela himself, David James Smith has written the single most important contribution to our knowledge of this global icon.   Author     David James Smith ISBN       0297858459, 9780297858454 Format    Paperback Pages     340p.

Hard cover with dust cover; 189 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg.   'At the age of nineteen he married Ann Maw and two years later he was ordained as a Methodist minister and appointed chaplain to Sephton's party, and came with his wife and baby daughter on the Aurora to South Africa under the British Settler scheme of 1820. For most young men so great a responsibility in a strange and hostile country would have been overwhelming, but in the words of his friend, William Boyce, "though young in years. he was never, strictly speaking, a young man." This account of the life and work of the Rev. William Shaw has been compiled of extracts from his letters and journals. It provides a vivid, first hand account of the conditions in which the settlers found themselves in the land of their adoption, and it tells of Shaw's meeting with the Dutch Trekkers, the African tribesmen, the government officials, the slaves, the Hottentots and the many other peoples in this broad corner of the continent. The events in themselves might be of interest, but it is the character and personality of Shaw himself which illuminates the record for he brought to everything he did a sober judgement, a human warmth, and an invincible faith in God's providence.'

A rich, romantic novel set in post-world war II italy--steeped in military history--about young love, idealism, and the lessons of experience. - Like Louis de Bernires's Corelli's Mandolin, Gianni Riotta's charming and provocative romance explores large and small matters of love and war, shifting between the turbulence of postwar Sicily and the great battles of ancient and modern history. A major bestseller in Italy, Prince of the Clouds is a deeply moving work of fiction, imbued with rare vibrance and feeling.- A rather new lookind book with no faults that I can see.     1948 book still in  a good condition - Little bit of pencil underlining.       *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book - See what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while.

Some of the tales are fiction and some are narrative non-fiction - they are all powerful, fascinating and moving, and aim to celebrate regional diversity and explore the meaning of home. In these pages on the South Coast, you'll find two unique tales. 'Margate Calling' is an intimate, honest and inspiring account of living in Margate by award-winning BBC broadcaster Gemma Cairney. 'Maisie and Mrs Webster' is a bold, fiercely funny and deeply moving piece of fiction about an obese young woman who is confined to her bed and longs to see the sea, by Brighton-based playwright Judy Upton. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 10 working days Told with the immediacy of a diary, which is where the book began, Patrick takes us on a journey to the highest mountain in the world, where one of the greatest tragedies in climbing history was about to unfold. Filled with photographs and sketches from his notebooks we become part of the Radio 702 team sent to cover the South African Everest Expedition of 1996. It would turn out to be the deadliest climbing seasons in the peak's history. Twenty years later the controversy around what truly happened on the mountain continues to rage. Conroy kept a meticulous diary and recorded many hours of radio communications between the climbers. Now, two decades later, his memoirs reveal a remarkable and untold story of what happened on the mountain that fateful year. Everest Untold includes hidden insights and never before revealed transcripts that shed new light on the 1996 disaster, including the mysterious disappearance of one of the South African team members in the death zone. Conroy's hidden story reopens the debate on the risks of high-altitude mountaineering and what it meant to a young democratic South Africa unaware of the dangers that lay ahead. War of Words: Memoir of a South African Journalist by Benjamin Pogrund When Benjamin Pogrund, one of South Africa's most distinguished journalists, first began his career as a young reporter in the 1950s, "There had been little reason at that stage to believe that anything revolutionary was about to start." As the "African affairs reporter," and then deputy editor, it was Pogrund who first brought the words of black leaders like Robert Sobukwe and Nelson Mandela to the pages of South Africa's leading newspaper, the Rand Daily Mail. This was the period of apartheid in South Africa and for most of the next thirty years, the Rand Daily Mail was the country's liberal white voice against the tyranny of the Afrikaner Nationalist government. A riveting memoir and a complex commentary on apartheid and freedom of the press, War of Words offers an insider's perspective on one of the most turbulent, and arguably one of the most significant, periods in modern history.

A Soldier in South Africa 1899 to 1902 in Good acceptable condition with dust jacket fair minor tears that been fixed. Slight minor water damaged     About this Item:  (Johannesburg: The Brenthurst Press, 1989) 0909079439, 1989. Brenthurst Second Series, number 6. Standard edition limited to 850 copies. Large 4to; original red cloth; pictorial dustwrapper, housed in removable protector; tinted top edge; silk markers; pp. 207+ (i), incl. index; profusely illustrated with maps, facsimiles, and reproductions of contemporary artwork and photographs."Lieutenant Eustace Abadie of the 9th Lancers arrived in South Africa on 10 October 1899. The next day the South African War broke out and his regiment moved northward as part of Lord Methuen's advance on the beleaguered Kimberley. It was at this time that Abadie experienced his baptism of fire, at the battle of Belmont. The twenty-two-year-old cavalry officer fought also at the battles of Graspan and Modder River and some weeks later was present at Magersfontein when Boer commandos inflicted a severe defeat on Methuen's army. Thereafter, Abadie was directly involved in the dramatic events which led to the relief of Kimberley on 15 February 1900 and the subsequent fall of Bloemfontein on 13 March. From mid February 1900 until the end of the war he served on the staff of Major-General French who commanded the cavalry division on the march to Pretoria and beyond, and who later took charge of mobile operations in the Cape. As a member of French's staff, Abadie had men of the calibre of Douglas Haig as colleagues and he found himself close to where decisions were taken at command level. His position enabled him to meet the most senior officers - such as Lords Roberts and Kitchener. This is the previously unpublished story of one man's experience of three years of war, written in the heat of the moment. Not subject to any form of military censorship, Abadie's account of the conflict, the country and the people he encountered, is frank, critical and perceptive. Together with accompanying contemporary illustrations, this work vividly portrays an imperial war at the turn of the century as seen through the eyes of an observant young cavalryman. It is a valuable addition to existing accounts of the South African War."
