Engaging essays that roam across uncertain territory, in search of sunken forests, unclassifiable islands, inflammable skies, plagiarized tabernacles, and other phenomena missing from architectural history. This collection by "architectural history's most beguiling essayist" (as Reinhold Martin calls the author in the book's foreword) illuminates the unfamiliar, the arcane, the obscure -- phenomena largely missing from architectural and landscape history. These essays by Edward Eigen do not walk in a straight line, but roam across uncertain territory, discovering sunken forests, unclassifiable islands, inflammable skies, unvisited shores, plagiarized tabernacles. Taken together, these texts offer a group portrait of how certain things fall apart. We read about the statistical investigation of lightning strikes in France by the author-astronomer Camille Flammarion, which leads Eigen to reflect also on Foucault, Hamlet, and the role of the anecdote in architectural history. We learn about, among other things, Olmsted's role in transforming landscape gardening into landscape architecture; the connections among hedging, hedge funds, the High Line, and GPS bandwidth; timber-frame roofs and (spider) web-based learning; the archives of the Houses of Parliament through flood and fire; and what the 1898 disappearance and reappearance of the Trenton, New Jersey architect William W. Slack might tell us about the conflict between "the migratory impulse" and "love of home." Eigen compares his essays to the "gathering up of seeds that fell by the wayside." The seedlings that result create in the reader's imagination a dazzling display of the particular, the contingent, the incidental, and the singular, all in search of a narrative. Editorial Reviews Review With great wit and extraordinary knowledge -- skillfully supported by writing that makes us pay nothing yet delivers everything -- this book guides us into the rich subject of accident and anecdote as forms of historical criticism. Riveting accounts of landscapes, architectures, and the thickness of life bring the central epistemological dilemmas of our time into exquisite relief. A brilliant book. (Catherine Ingraham, Professor of Architecture, Pratt Institute; author of Architecture and the Burdens of Linearity) The owl of Minerva flies at dusk. Blam! Blam! Silence. The little soft-bodied creatures are safe again. Edward Eigen has written a book of crepuscular erudition, architectural history as would have been dreamed by the Lovecraftian lovechild of Edward Gorey, Laurence Sterne, and Jules Verne. It is baroque, wry, pessimistic, mannered, manorial, and seems to have all the time in the world. I have no idea what the world we are entering will make of it, but I am glad it has been published, since it can perhaps function as an idiosyncratic time capsule: this is what it was like to have a beautiful mind on the watershed of the twenty-first century. (D. Graham Burnett, Professor of History and History of Science, Princeton University; coauthor of Keywords:...Relevant to Academic Life, &c.) Read more About the Author Edward Eigen is Associate Professor of History of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and Associate Editor of Studies in the History of Gardens and Designed Landscapes. His writing has appeared in Cabinet, Pamphlet, Grey Room, and other publications. But when tragedy strikes, throwing Saira's life into turmoil, the woman who circled the globe to uncover the details of other lives must confront the truths of her own. In need of understanding, she looks to the stories of those who came before--her grandparents, a beloved aunt, her mother and father. Subtitle: On Recent South African Writing Author: M.J. Daymond, J.U. Jacobs and Margaret Lenta Publisher: University Of KwaZulu-Natal Press (1984) ISBN-10: 0869803778 ISBN-13: 9780869803776 Condition: Very Good. Light wear to cover corners. Else an excellent copy. Binding: Softcover Pages: 325 Dimensions: 21.9 x 14.8 x 1.8 cm +++ by MJ Daymond, JU Jacobs and Margaret Lenta +++ Momentum sees writing in South Africa after Soweto '76 as being of two kinds: the artefact novels, plays or poetry; and the manifesto the artist's statement about the shaping power of events in this country on his or her work. Another kind of division is also operative in South African literature: the writings of those who live here and the writings of those who live abroad - our exiles.  Because there are at least these two kinds of divisions in our literature, Momentum takes the shape it does. It combines writers' statements (from home and abroad) about their work with critical discussion of that work. This combination is unique in South African publishing and its effect is to allow the reader to come to an independent understanding of the interactions between forces which shape our writing, the writing itself, and critical response to that writing.

The Gentle Art of Domesticity: Stitching, Baking, Nature, Art & the Comforts of Home By Jane Brocket, 2008 Publication Date: 2008 Jane Brocket delights in domesticity. Lively, curious, and creative, she takes inspiration from her surroundings, from art, literature, and nature, and expresses her passion through the gentle arts of needlework, cooking, gardening, and homemaking—and now through her writing. In The Gentle Art of Domesticity Brocket celebrates everything that is, and can be, wonderful about home life.   This gorgeous and unusual book, full of whimsy, warmth, and a wealth of stunning photographs, helps us to see domesticity with new eyes. Whether she’s knitting a tea cozy or baking jam tarts, crocheting a blanket or sewing an apron, Brocket fills her home with beauty, color, and fun. She transforms day-to-day domesticity into a realm of possibilities, both practical and imaginative—and encourages us to do the same in our own lives.   Rather than categorize readers as quilters or embroiderers, bakers or gardeners, Brocket embraces the idea that they may be all of these, and more. The key to practicing any of the domestic arts, she says, is to recognize the value of homemaking, overlooked skills, and ordinary things. This book’s glorious synthesis of style, DIY projects, and philosophical musings inspires us not only to emulate Brocket’s handmade creations but also to share her enjoyment of the simple pleasures of home. •  Hardcover: 288 pages •  Publisher: Stewart, Tabori, & Chang (Sep 2008) •  Language: English •  ISBN-10: 1584797363 •  ISBN-13: 978-1584797364 •  Product Dimensions: 25.1 x 20 x 2.6 cm

It has been ten years since Abby Williams left home and scrubbed away all evidence of her small town roots. Now working as an environmental lawyer in Chicago, she has a thriving career, a modern apartment, and her pick of meaningless one-night stands. But when a new case takes her back home to Barrens, Indiana, the life Abby painstakingly created begins to crack. But as Abby tries desperately to find out what happened to Kaycee, troubling memories begin to resurface and she begins to doubt her own observations.  Educating Alice ADVENTURES OF A CURIOUS WOMAN By ALICE STEINBACH     When Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Alice Steinbach decided to take a year off to explore Europe and rediscover what it was like to be an independent woman, she left her job, family, friends and routine behind. The result, WITHOUT RESERVATIONS, became a bestseller and inspired women everywhere to take that leap, if not in reality, at least in their imaginations. But having opened the door to a new way of living, Steinbach found herself unwilling to return to the old routine. She quit her job and left home again, only this time her objective was to find a way to combine three of her greatest passions: travelling, writing and learning. EDUCATING ALICE is the intimate, funny and richly entertaining story of her adventures roaming the world to conquer new challenges, large and small. She learns how to cook at the Hotel Ritz in Paris, tackles the intricacies of traditional Japanese arts in Kyoto, makes a pilgrimage to Jane Austen's birthplace, revisits the past in Prague, surrenders to the spontaneous joy of music and memories in Havana, uncovers the secrets of border collie training in Scotland, and much, much more. Along the way, Steinbach learns more from the people she connects with on her travels and unplanned encounters than any of her lessons.                     This funny and tender book combines three of Alice Steinbach’s greatest passions: learning, traveling, and writing. After chronicling her European journey of self-discovery in Without Reservations,  this Pulitzer Prize—winning columnist for the Baltimore Sun quit her job and left home again. This time she roamed the world, taking lessons and courses in such things as French cooking in Paris, Border collie training in Scotland, traditional Japanese arts in Kyoto, and architecture and art in Havana. With warmth and wit, Steinbach guides us through the pleasures and perils of discovering how to be a student again. She also learns the true value of this second chance at educating herself: the opportunity to connect with and learn from the people she meets along the way.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days For over twenty years, people turned to A. A. Gill's columns every Sunday - for his fearlessness, his perception, and the laughter-and-tear-provoking one-liners - but mostly because he was the best. 'By miles the most brilliant journalist of our age', as Lynn Barber put it. This is the definitive collection of a voice that was silenced too early but that can still make us look at the world in new and surprising ways. In the words of Andrew Marr, A.. A. Gill was 'a golden writer'. There was nothing that he couldn't illuminate with his dazzling prose. Wherever he was - at home or abroad - he found the human story, brought it to vivid life, and rendered it with fierce honesty and bracing compassion. And he was just as truthful about himself. There have been various collections of A. A. Gill's journalism - individual compilations of his restaurant and TV criticism, of his travel writing and his extraordinary feature articles. This book showcasesthe very best of his work: the peerlessly funny criticism, the extraordinarily knowledgeable food writing, assignments throughout the world, and reflections on life, love, and death. Drawn from a range of publications, including the Sunday Times, Vanity Fair, Tatler and Australian Gourmet Traveller, The Ivy Cookbook and his books on England and America, it is by turns hilarious, uplifting, controversial, unflinching, sad, funny and furious. Selling Lipservice Since coming of haemorrh-age, Frith must wear a LipService patch to write or speak. The words the patch produces are not her own. Scripted by copywriters, they promote one sponsoring brand or another. With them, 'You' -- a voice in her head that is the patch's brand persona and her conformist alter ego -- appears. Through the noise of You talking a variety of different LipService brands, Frith struggles to find her way back to speaking for herself.
