He wrote The Art of War in the fifth century BC and yet his words are still resoundingly relevant to our modern lives. With James Clavell's insightful foreword and notes, this classic is widely seen as a necessity on the bookshelf of military leaders and boardroom executives alike. Wealth And Power: China's Long March To The Twenty-First Century - Orville Schell & John Delury By now everyone knows the basic facts of China's rise to pre-eminence over the past three decades. But how did this erstwhile sleeping giant finally manage to arrive at its current phase of dynamic growth? How did a century-long succession of failures to change somehow culminate in the extraordinary dynamism of China today? By examining the lives of eleven influential officials, writers, activists and leaders whose contributions helped create modern China, Wealth and Power addresses these questions. This fascinating survey moves from the lead-up to the first Opium War through to contemporary opposition to single-party rule. Along the way, we meet titans of Chinese history, intellectuals and political figures. By unwrapping the intellectual antecedents of today's resurgent China, Orville Schell and John Delury supply much-needed insight into the country's tortured progression from nineteenth-century decline to twenty-first-century boom. By looking backward into the past to understand forces at work for hundreds of years, they help us understand China today and the future that this singular country is helping shape for all of us. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days How America's bomber boys and girls in England won their war, and how their English allies responded to it. The US 8th Air Force came of age in the England of 1944. With a fresh commander, it was ready to demonstrate its true power: from Big Week in February, targeting German aircraft production plants, to bringing the Luftwaffe to battle over Berlin, the combined USAAF-RAF round-the clock campaign of bottling up the German army in Normandy and the strategically vital oil offensive of the following autumn and winter. Day after day, the American bomber boys watched their comrades burn to death in blazing bombers, be thrown out of exploding aircraft without parachutes and sink with their crippled aircraft in the freezing North Sea. But by the following spring they had destroyed the Nazi fighter arm and seen Germany broken in two. In this comprehensive history, Kevin Wilson has allowed the youngsters of the 8th to tell their stories of blood and heroism in their own words. At the same time, he has opened up the lives of the Women's Army Corps and Red Cross girls who served in England with them and feared for the men in the skies, and he hasn't flinched from recounting the devastation of bombing or the testimony of shocked German civilians. Wilson has interviewed American veterans and trawled archives in both the United States and Britain to complete this final volume of his air-war series, adding to his critically acclaimed trilogy about the RAF and Commonwealth air forces' bomber offensive. Drawing on first-hand accounts from diaries, letters and his personal recordings, the author has brought to life the ebullient Americans' interaction with their British counterparts and the civilians who lived near the air bases, unveiling stories of humanity and heartbreak. Thanks to America's bomber boys and girls, life in Britain would never be the same again. Since 1992, with the presentation of an excerpt from Walt Whitman's "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry," the Poetry in Motion program-co-sponsored by MTA Arts & Design and the Poetry Society of America-has brought more than 200 poems, in whole or in part, before the eyes of millions of subway and bus riders, offering a moment of timelessness in the busy day. The poems are by an eclectic mix of writers, from Sappho and Sylvia Plath to W. H. Auden, Rita Dove, Seamus Heaney, Nikki Giovanni, Patrick Phillips, and Aracelis Girmay. Each of the 100 poems gathered here has, in sixteen lines or less, the power to enliven the quotidian, provide nourishment for the soul, and enchant even the youngest among us. These warnings allude to potential dangers and prove an ineffective deterrent against thieves and vandals. To the urban explorer/photographer these signs simply serve to whet the appetite for the promise of hidden wonders that may lie beyond. For those who ignore the warnings and climb the fences, what awaits is usually worth the risks. Vast industrial spaces that feel more like an alien landscape or poignant residential settings, which are slowly surrendering to the inexorable advance of nature. Places once alive with sound and movement, now silent and still, but no less sensory. Immense and powerful beauty resides in these forgotten places. For some, just getting inside a location to experience this alternative form of sightseeing is enough to satisfy a desire to simply go where one shouldn't. But for some there is a need to capture the essence of a location in words and pictures, giving others a metaphorical leg-up over the fences, to walk them through the remaining ruins. Matt Emmett falls into the latter of these groups, travelling regularly to places in the UK and across Europe. He seeks out vast power stations and their cooling towers, steel works, mines, bunkers, tunnels, schools, engine sheds, hotels, castles and a myriad of other buildings. All have their own stories to tell in a variety of voices and without the distraction, sounds and people who inhabited them, those stories are clear and strong and the character of each location is laid bare. Architectural Digest: "Photographer Matt Emmett has made a name for himself by pushing the boundaries to capture epic imagery of Europe s most forgotten ruins." International Business Times: "Matt Emmett's 'Forgotten Heritage' photography project uncovers the brutal beauty of abandoned buildings and derelict industry." This is a story of the difficulties which an Italian prisoner of war and later immigrant family to South Africa had to endure, and the toll it took on the family, and on the author as the daughter of the family in particular. It is especially the story of her battle to overcome the trauma of her childhood and youth, and the Sicilian family culture of that time. She has learned to value her heritage, and to forgive both herself and those close to her, and finally to accept and love herself as a complete and beautiful person. Her story is one of trauma, depression, awareness, acceptance, forgiveness, and ultimately, of compassion and love. About the Author Savina Plescia Redpath was born in Palermo, Sicily in 1948. She emigrated to South Africa, at the age of 13 months, with her mother and eldest brother, to join her father who had returned to South Africa in 1947 after having been imprisoned there at Zonderwater Prisoner-of-War Camp during the 2nd World War.    Author(s): Savina Plescia Redpath  Title:      Falling in Love with Myself  ISBN: 978 1 920535 95 7  Publisher/place:  Kima Books/Power of Words, Johannesburg  This Edition: first   Year of Publication:  2016  Binding: paperback Number of pages:  188  Weight:  210g  Condition:   This item is sold brand new, is in stock at our store and available for immediate dispatch.  - This is an autographed copy, limited number available.

Book "Love Hope Marvels" by Bryan Hattingh - Signed and inscribed 2016   Love, Hope, Marvels is a collection of Bryan Hattingh’s realisations on the human condition, business, love, family, and creativity. It is filled with insightful essays, lucid musings, and exquisite photography, exhibiting a vision of Bryan’s colour-rich world. He has woven a tapestry of his perceptions and learning so that any reader might use those threads of Bryan’s experiences for his or her own tapestry of life, unlocking the reader’s potential to embrace all the colours of existence, and marvel at this wonderful experience called life. “In the context of the world … we need HOPE more than anything. And HOPE is brought by LOVE, and we will MARVEL at the outcome of this! Buy this book as a gift to you or someone, and start the journey of HOPE. Wonderful uplifting words in beautiful fonts and colours, accompanied by stunning photographs. A coffee table book … to grab for inspiration!” — Mardia van der Walt, Chairman of the Board of Directors: T-Systems South Africa; Director: Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce “Bryan writes with the sensitivity of one who has not simply observed the world, but instead dived in head-long into this thing we call life … His writing … goes from the deeply spiritual to the patently pragmatic … Bryan’s gift is to paint with an artist’s brush the journey of life so that it is both art and path at once … So many of the books … focus exclusively on our strengths and abilities and how to unleash these to win big in business. Bryan dares to remind us that we live lives in which we also fall in love. Love is a state of grace in which we allow ourselves to be weak and even vulnerable but ultimately redeemed by its power.” — Sindi Maboso Koyana, CEO Advanced Capital “As Coenraad [Jonker] points out in his introduction, [Love, Hope, Marvels] is something to be dipped into at leisure and at random, with the certainty that every page contains something very much worth reflecting on. If I had to pick a personal favourite text, it would be, ‘One of the greatest tasks of a leader is recognising, understanding and managing paradox’. This is a profound insight – and one that I’m truly grateful to see in print … [The] photos are magnificent – I refuse to pick a favourite among these. They’re all great.” — Sim Tshabalala, CEO Standard Bank.

By what means did the Commission endeavor to understand South Africa's violent past and promote a spirit of national unity? Did the commission's acclaimed and controversial efforts help South Africans to walk the bridge from apartheid to nonracial democracy? This groundbreaking volume provides an explicit and often startling view of the Truth and reconciliation commission. In the name of understanding the commission's development, work, and findings, it features a rich variety of materials, including many selections from the TRC's archive of testimony and its Final Report that have yet to receive significant public scrutiny. These fundamental documents challenge conventional accounts of the Commission. They also shed light on how the Commission undertook a public process of history-making, attempted to deal with the past in a manner that gave voice to experiences long silenced, endeavoured to expose the violence of apartheid and the excesses of struggle, and demonstrated the political necessity of repairing a crime against humanity. For both citizen and student, this volume affords an opportunity to grapple with the difficult concepts of truth and reconciliation in South Africa and a chance to reflect on why these two simple words have challenged international preconceptions about the power and potential of African politics. I sell used books BUT got a few of these brand new from someone who bought them by the box-full to hand out to everyone he met - Bloody weird friends I have.  >>>    I loved this book!    It turned out to be one of those easy-to-read stories that leave you thinking, and thinking, and thinking. The science fiction aspect of the plot is not important at all. It is the impact of power, knowledge and ritual on every single individual that made me want to restart reading it as soon as I finished. I absolutely adore the creation of Bokononism and the development of a new language to suit the needs of the religion-in-the-making.   Margaret Atwood's  MaddAddam  experiments with the same kind of post-apocalyptic scenario and the never-ending question of what humanity needs to survive. Of course Vonnegut's vision is a lot darker than Atwood's. Humanity wiped out completely on a whim, no hope of reproducing our species at all, the only question remaining is how to die and what symbol to carry in your hand to show the hated - and hating - creator above.   The experience of being trapped in Dresden as an American prisoner of war during the bombing and destruction of the city might have formed the sense of absurdity that Vonnegut displays in his vision of mankind.   To put it in Bokononist words: the cruel paradox of the heartbreaking necessity of lying about reality combined with the heartbreaking impossibility of lying about it is at the center of the book.  Foma!     *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me on the same day you only pay R 6 extra postage for each of the additional books - See what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while.

He does not define himself with reference to any thing, person, or trait. He is, and that is enough. Women find themselves in a far different situation. When we introduce ourselves, we typically describe ourselves in terms of our relationships (the wife, mother, daughter, sister, or friend of someone else) or in terms of our accomplishments (our title, position, education, or accolades). When our identity is wrapped up in these external things, we inevitably (and exhaustingly!) strive to prove ourselves worthy of love, attention, or affirmation. God never meant for us to focus on whether we are "enough," whether we measure up. He made us--every piece of us--to be just as he is. Jerusha Clark discovered this while exploring Jesus's seven powerful "I am" statements recorded in the Gospel of John. She invites women to join her in embracing the life and truth of these words, relishing the freedom of an identity fixed on Christ alone while leaving behind fear, bitterness, busyness, and toxic thoughts that steal our joy and limit our power. Features Summary Bestselling author and speaker uses Jesus's I Am statements to help women identify and expel toxic thoughts buried deep in their hearts and minds, pointing them to God's truth about who they are and helping them experience authentic... Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. "Nothing is filed under the heading 'imperialism' in the archives of any nation-state that owned an empire. Foreign affairs, or external relations, are catalogued there, and a place is found for imperial administration and colonial trade; but 'imperialism' is always a listing in someone else's index, never one's own. It is not the name a government uses to classify the policies it sets in motion. It is the name given them by those who adopt a particular attitude... In our time the attitude toward this control is hostile." With these words A.P. Thornton takes on a complex and elusive term, "imperialism," and pursues its meaning and implications in the years of imperial decline. The disappearance of territorial empire, according to Thornton, did not bring imperial impulses to an end, nor did it destroy the power relationships set up in the heyday of empire. Casting a cool eye on the claims of both imperialism and nationalism--the principal countervailing force--Thornton brings imagination, wide learning, and clarifying wit to bear upon a subject that remains significant in the last quarter of the twentieth century.  Andrew's Brain by E. L Doctorow (Paperback)   This brilliant new novel by an American master, the author of Ragtime, The Book of Daniel, Billy Bathgate, and The March, takes us on a radical trip into the mind of a man who, more than once in his life, has been an inadvertent agent of disaster. Speaking from an unknown place and to an unknown interlocutor, Andrew is thinking, Andrew is talking, Andrew is telling the story of his life, his loves, and the tragedies that have led him to this place and point in time. And as he confesses, peeling back the layers of his strange story, we are led to question what we know about truth and memory, brain and mind, personality and fate, about one another and ourselves. Written with psychological depth and great lyrical precision, this suspenseful and groundbreaking novel delivers a voice for our times-funny, probing, skeptical, mischievous, profound. Andrew's Brain is a surprising turn and a singular achievement in the canon of a writer whose prose has the power to create its own landscape, and whose great topic, in the words of Don DeLillo, is the reach of American possibility, in which plain lives take on the cadences of history.
