Japanese Family and Society: Words from Tongo Takebe, A Meiji Era Sociologist presents a carefully edited, accurate translation by Teruhito Sako of original work from the early Japanese sociologist Tongo Takebe. His unique viewpoint sheds light on both Eastern and Western perspectives used to describe societal development and a classification system of knowledge. This easily understandable source retains the essences of this classical Japanese social theorist's work while giving an excellent overview of Eastern and Western social theory and philosophy and discussion of major scientific advances from the earliest eras until 1900. Japanese Family and Society is a translation of Takebe's General Sociology: Introduction (1904, Volume 1) and an excerpt from General Sociology: Social Statistics (1909, Volume 3). In Volume 1, Takebe reviews the accomplishments of major Eastern and Western scholars. Systematically, Takebe discusses the major scientific advances in physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, history, economics, philosophy, anthropology, political science, and sociology to develop criteria for a classification system of knowledge. In the excerpt from Volume 3, Takebe discusses family relationships. In these translations, Takebe focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of both Eastern and Western viewpoints of societal development in which he demonstrates the advantages of combining these perspectives. Topics in Japanese Family and Society include: * a brief history of Japanese society * early Japanese sociologists * a biography of Tongo Takebe * theoretical introduction to sociology, sociology's problems, and methodology * historical introduction to the sociological ideas in Japan, China, Indian thought, Ancient Greece, Medieval Europe, and the Modern era * the rise of socialism * major accomplishments in various disciplines * family organization, including marital relationships, parent-child relationships, sibling relationships, and others * much more Japanese Family and Society can be used as a text or supplemental text for upper level undergraduate courses in social theory, sociology, philosophy, history, and social science. Features Summary Although multiculturalism is stressed in modern sociology education, most perspectives continue to be influenced by Judeo-Christian ideas. Tongo Takebe's work presents an alternative approach to the study of societal development & the role of family. Cursed Kings tells the story of the destruction of France by the madness of its king and the greed and violence of his family. In the early fifteenth century France, Europe's strongest and most populous state, suffered a complete internal collapse. As the warring parties within fought for the spoils of the kingdom under the vacant gaze of the mad King Charles VI, the country was left at the mercy of one of the most remarkable rulers of the European Middle Ages: Henry V of England, who had destroyed the French army on the field of Agincourt in October 1415 and left most of France's leadership dead. Sumption recounts in extraordinary detail the relentless campaign of conquest that brought Henry to the streets and palaces of Paris within just a few years. He died at the age of thirty-six in a French royal castle in 1422, just two months before he would have become king of France. Six centuries later, these extraordinary events are overlaid by the resounding words of Shakespeare and the potent national myths of England and France. In Cursed Kings, Jonathan Sumption strips away the layers to rediscover the personalities and events that lie beneath. Features Summary The eagerly anticipated fourth volume of Jonathan Sumption's prize-winning history of the Hundred Years War. Volume 2 1971. Hard  cover with dust cover, 527 pages. Very good condition. Over 1kg. Compiled and translated by R.Raven-Hart During the first fifty years of Dutch colonisation at the Cape of Good Hope many travellers arrived in Table Bay, on their way to the East:some came voluntarily, others by force of circumstance.   They came ashore, looked around, observed strange, indigenous people, interesting plants and animals, they visited the little settlement, met the local personalities, wondered at the way-of-life. They also consulted and negotiated with the Dutch officials, and sought help in their difficulties.   And, most frequently, they recorded their impressions so as to inform and astonish their firneds in Europe with the wonders they had seen. These impressions were sometimes published; but more often they appeared in ships' log books and other mss, unpublished, and available to the researchers of today in archives and special liabraries only.   Such recorded impressions are the subject matter of this book: Major Raven-Hart has selected, transcribed and meticulously translated a total of 104 accounts by visitors to the Cape between 1652 and 1702. They are taken from the original Dutch, English, French, Portuguese, Danish and German; with one exception, the list is exhaustive for this period.   The language styles are varied; quaint and vivid, penetrating, and sometimes quite coarse.   To accompany the transcribed texts, and to help the reader enjoy and understand, Major Raven-Hart has provided background and context notes to describe contemporary happenings in Europe, official records by the Cape commanders and governors and biographical notes on the writers.   In the index the reader will find references to animals, plants, persons, names, etc; a glossary of foreign words, definitions of various sea-faring and navigational terms and expressions; identifications of flora and fauna, bibliographies; and explanatory notes. This index is not just a valuable and practical working tool-it is virtually a concentrated commpanion-book or vade mecum for late 17th C history of the Cape.   A feature of this book are the illustrations: the author has been able to find 65 engravings, maps, title pages, portraits-most of which have been reproduced as full-or double-pages.

Theodore Roethke was one of the most famous and outspoken poets and poetry teachers this country has ever known. In this volume of selected prose, Roethke articulates his commitments to imaginative possibilities, offers tender advice to young writers, and zings darts at stuffed shirts, lightweights and fools. ""Art is our defense against hysteria and death."" With the assistance of Roethke's widow, this volume has been edited to include the finest selections from out of print collections of prose and journal entries. Focused on the making and teaching of poetry, "On Poetry and Craft" will be prized in the classroom-and outrageous Roethke quotes will once again pepper our conversations. ""You must believe a poem is a holy thing, a good poem, that is."" Theodore Roethke was of an illustrious generation of poets which included Sexton, Plath, Lowell, Berryman, and like them he received nearly every major award in poetry, including the Pulitzer Prize and twice the National Book Award. In spite of his fame, he remained a legendary teacher, known for the care and attention he gave to his students, poets such as James Wright, Carolyn Kizer, Tess Gallagher, and Richard Hugo. Roethke died on August 1, 1963, while swimming in a friend's pool. ""But before I'm reduced to an absolute pulp by my own ambivalence, I must say goodbye. The old lion perisheth. Nymphs, I wish you the swoops of many fish. May your search for the abiding be forever furious."" On Poetry and Craft I am overwhelmed by the beautiful disorder of poetry, the eternal virginity of words. The poem, even a short time after being written, seems no miracle; unwritten, it seems something beyond the capacity of the gods. We can't escape what we are, and I'm afraid many of my notions about verse (I haven't too many) have been conditioned by the fact that for nearly 25 years I've been trying to teach the young something about the nature of verse by writing it--and that with very little formal knowledge of the subject or previous instruction. So it's going to be lik Features Summary Roethke's prose teems with fierce intelligence and outrageous quoteable quotes. By what means did the Commission endeavor to understand South Africa's violent past and promote a spirit of national unity? Did the commission's acclaimed and controversial efforts help South Africans to walk the bridge from apartheid to nonracial democracy? This groundbreaking volume provides an explicit and often startling view of the Truth and reconciliation commission. In the name of understanding the commission's development, work, and findings, it features a rich variety of materials, including many selections from the TRC's archive of testimony and its Final Report that have yet to receive significant public scrutiny. These fundamental documents challenge conventional accounts of the Commission. They also shed light on how the Commission undertook a public process of history-making, attempted to deal with the past in a manner that gave voice to experiences long silenced, endeavoured to expose the violence of apartheid and the excesses of struggle, and demonstrated the political necessity of repairing a crime against humanity. For both citizen and student, this volume affords an opportunity to grapple with the difficult concepts of truth and reconciliation in South Africa and a chance to reflect on why these two simple words have challenged international preconceptions about the power and potential of African politics. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days How America's bomber boys and girls in England won their war, and how their English allies responded to it. The US 8th Air Force came of age in the England of 1944. With a fresh commander, it was ready to demonstrate its true power: from Big Week in February, targeting German aircraft production plants, to bringing the Luftwaffe to battle over Berlin, the combined USAAF-RAF round-the clock campaign of bottling up the German army in Normandy and the strategically vital oil offensive of the following autumn and winter. Day after day, the American bomber boys watched their comrades burn to death in blazing bombers, be thrown out of exploding aircraft without parachutes and sink with their crippled aircraft in the freezing North Sea. But by the following spring they had destroyed the Nazi fighter arm and seen Germany broken in two. In this comprehensive history, Kevin Wilson has allowed the youngsters of the 8th to tell their stories of blood and heroism in their own words. At the same time, he has opened up the lives of the Women's Army Corps and Red Cross girls who served in England with them and feared for the men in the skies, and he hasn't flinched from recounting the devastation of bombing or the testimony of shocked German civilians. Wilson has interviewed American veterans and trawled archives in both the United States and Britain to complete this final volume of his air-war series, adding to his critically acclaimed trilogy about the RAF and Commonwealth air forces' bomber offensive. Drawing on first-hand accounts from diaries, letters and his personal recordings, the author has brought to life the ebullient Americans' interaction with their British counterparts and the civilians who lived near the air bases, unveiling stories of humanity and heartbreak. Thanks to America's bomber boys and girls, life in Britain would never be the same again. Hardcover: In 1982, during the Falklands War, the Welsh Guardsman Simon Weston was robbed of his youth, his looks and, it seemed his future, when the troopship Sir Galahad was hit by an Argentinian bomb, creating a holocaust in which many men died and Simon suffered terrible burns. Simon's story is one of great personal triumph over appalling tragedy and intense mental suffering. After a period of deep despair during which he came close to suicide, Simon found the strength to confront life once again and create a new future. The first half of this volume has been an inspiration to millions. It describes, in his own words, Simon's childhood in the Welsh village of Nelson, his life in the army, the horrific events of 1982 and his attempts to come to terms with the profound physical and mental scars of his experiences. The second half is about his journey back to the Falklands and to meet the pilot who dropped the bomb on Sir Galahad so that he could come to terms with his new life. The most moving story ever told.

Books and wrappers in very good condition - Previously belonged to Stuart Hendry, Longtime History Master at Pretoria Boys High and all 4 have his signature and bookplate inside - Stunning wrappers now in removable transparent sleeves.  >>>    Cassell and Company, Ltd., London, First edition, first printing. This is a jacketed, British first edition set of Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. Churchill's four volume epic, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, was published between 1956 and 1958. The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. The work itself was two decades in the making. The Churchillian conceptions that underpinned it were lifelong. The cultural commonality and vitality of English-speaking peoples animated Churchill throughout his life, from his Victorian youth in an ascendant British Empire to his twilight in the midst of the American century. Churchill began A History of the English-Speaking Peoples in the 1930s, completing a draft of "about half a million words" which was set aside when Churchill returned to the Admiralty and to war in September 1939. The work was fittingly interrupted by an unprecedented alliance among the English-speaking peoples during the Second World War - an alliance Churchill personally did much to cultivate, cement, and sustain. The interruption continued as Churchill bent his literary efforts to his six-volume history, The Second World War, and then his remaining political energies to his second and final premiership from 1951-1955. This first edition is regarded as one of the most beautiful productions of Churchill's works, with tall red volumes and striking, illustrated dust jackets.     *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book   – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days In this sharply innovative collection, renowned poet Fred Chappell layers words and images to create a new and dramatic poetic form -- the poem-within-a-poem. Like the shadow box in the volume's title, each piece consists of an inner world contained, framed, supported by an outer -- the two interdependent, sometimes supplementary, often contrary. For example, the grim but gorgeous "The Caretakers" is a landscape that reveals another image inside it. Chappell also introduces sonnets in which the sestet nests within the octet. Play serves as an important component, but the poems do not depend upon gamesmanship or verbal strategems. Instead, they delicately or wittily trace human feelings, respond somberly to the news of the world, and rejoice in humankind's plentiful variety of attitudes and beliefs. Just as an x-ray can show the inner structure of a physical object, so the techniques in Shadow Box display the internal energies of the separate works. With this new form -- the "enclosed" or "embedded" or "inlaid" poem -- Chappell broadens the expressive possibilities of formal poetry, intrigues the imagination in an entirely new way, and offers surprise and revelation in sudden flashes. At once revolutionary and traditional, Shadow Box contains an Aladdin's trove of surprises.  1998 / Hardcover / Good condition As poignant as Niall Fregusson's The Pity of War, as powerful as John Keegan's The First World War, this is an engrossing eye-witness history of World War I. From the trenches to the battle lines, in bold advances and fighting retreats and courageous stands, this oral chronicle of World War I by award-winning historian Lyn Macdonald brings to life the massive German offensive of Spring 1918 that became the Second Battle of Somme. As moving as it is monumental, the volume recounts the devastating assault in the words of the men who survived it -- from the commanders to the war-weary British Tommies, the eager German foot soldiers, and the as-yet-untested doughboys fresh from the U.S. Unforgettably, To the Last Man puts a human face on the armies in the field as it gives voice to the soldiers who together held their position against the foe-resisting, as the Allied command had ordered, "to the last round and the last man."

He is also one of Western Man's great liberators.' J. B. Priestly, Sunday Telegraph `Jung can sometimes rise to the heights of a Blake or a Nietzsche or a Kierkegaard...like any true prophet or artist, he extended the range of the human imagination...to be able to share Jungian emotions is surely an almost necessary capacity of the free mind.' Philip Toynbee, Observer This compact volume of extracts from the twenty volumes of Jung's published writings presents him clearly, in his own words and in precis. Jung's writing is the key to understanding 20th-century psychology, psychiatry and psychoanalysis. Most of the terms of reference now used (`extrovert', `collective unconscious', `archetype') are Jungian. This is essential reading for both students of psychology and the general reader. These are the opening words of the author's preface, which ends with a challenge to those who would like to join him in a journey through Africa from south to north. From Mendelssohn p 601 "Although the volume contains a description of a hunting trip through the Kalahari, the greater part of the work consists of a narrative of travels and adventures in the Transvaal. The author, an experienced sportsman, made arrangements with another keen hunter for a shooting expedition in 'Tropical Africa' with the intention of disembarking at Cape Town and taking a coaster to Walvisch Bay. This plan, however, did not prove feasible, and they decided to proceed up country via Natal.". Book No: 2501740

It serves as a poetic documentary of the lives of people who have been mistreated, misunderstood, and wrongfully labeled in a way that limits them in this world. The author's most personal volume yet, A Beautiful Composition of Broken builds a conceptual bridge between r.h. Sin's earliest work and his forthcoming series, Planting Gardens in Graves.
