Following the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, Germany was not permitted to build or operate submarines. However, clandestine training onboard Finnish and Spanish submarines took place and U-boats were still built to German designs in Dutch yards. At the outset of the Second World War, Dönitz argued for a 300-strong U-boat fleet, since his force of 57 U-boats 'could only inflict pin-pricks against British seaborne trade'. In August 1939, U-48 left Germany, commanded by 'Vaddi' Schultze, to take up a waiting position around England. It scored its first success on 5 September, when it torpedoed the British freighter Royal Sceptre, then the Winkleigh on 8 September. On both occasions — the first of many — Schultze showed himself to be a notable humanitarian: he addressed signals to Churchill giving positions of the sinkings so that crews could be saved. By 1 August 1941, U-48, the most successful boat of the Second World War, had sunk 56 merchant ships of 322,478 gross tons and one corvette. She was then transferred to the Baltic as a training boat. Schultze became commander of operation 3 U-Flotilla and later was appointed commander, II/Naval College Schleswig. He died in 1987 at the age of 78. U-48 was scuttled on 3 May 1945.

Due to increasing instability in Angola, since 1975, the South African Defence Force was galvanized into developing new weapon systems and tactics. Operation Askari was the sixth largescale cross-border operation into Angola and signified a clear watershed in both military and political policies for the future. The South Africans launched conventional attacks on a wide front deep into Southern Angola. The five forces stretched over a front of more than two hundred kilometres; from Cahama in the west to Caiundo in the east.  The Operation also signified the beginning of the end. It took another five years, and additional conventional attacks, to bring an end to the conflict. This Book: "Operation Askari 1984/85- War Journal" is the result of more than ninety veterans contributing their own unique experiences to the timeline. It varies from concise inputs to a comprehensive history of the Omauni Raiders by Willem Ratte on the Techamutete Front. A wide-eyed South African conscript relates his small share of the war in Angola and Namibia in the 1980s. This is not the usual military history, written by a commander armed with facts, nor a researched story of a war or campaign.  It is a personal experience. Being brutally honest it will resonate not only with readers of all things military but also with a wider literary audience, for its poetic prose and subtle sentiments, and for its entertaining narrative. It may thus be of interest not only to the South African men who were there, but to their women who were left behind, and to all men and women anywhere. It is a book by a non-warrior dumped into a war, which nevertheless provides vivid alternative first-hand accounts whose validity cannot simply be brushed aside by professional historians. Descriptive writing takes readers right into the colourful past, into action and into personal interactions. Notes made at the time preserve intimate details of what it was like to be a White South African during Apartheid, and the surprisingly humane culture within its small but effective White-led Army. Dialogue is remembered verbatim as is the unique jargon and profanity of the time, with English translations where Afrikaans is spoken. After a brief life background the narrative moves chronologically through two years of military training, deployment, combat and demobilisation, with comments on the human effect of these experiences. The result is a compelling time capsule: the South African Defence Force ceased to exist in 1994 when South Africa began its non-racial democracy. Surprisingly, because it was a humane army it was a good one. This is not just a liberal attitude. It meant that when a thing needed doing, it was done conscientiously and thoroughly, with thought for secondary effects. It was a dangerous opponent to have, inflicting maximum casualties where this was necessary, but when the need passed, it switched easily to a humanitarian purpose. The Covert War - Peter Stiff - Galago - 2004 - Hard cover with dust cover in good, clean and tight condition.   This is the detailed history of the elite policing unit operated by the South African forces on its Namibian border during the 1980s. In 1978, the counter insurgency war on the Angolan/SWA Namibian border was going badly for the South Africans. SWAPO was gaining the upper hand, so the South Africans decided to organise an elite commando-security unit based on the famed Rhodesian Selous Scouts. The unit was handed the Top Secret Project Koevoet ("crowbar") to provide operational intelligence by capturing & interrogating insurgents, but its commander came to realise that Namibia was different to the Rhodesian situation. So, the team reverted to basic police work, building informer networks, recruiting black police officers and skilled trackers. In its ten year existence, Koevoet fought in 1,615 encounters and took 3,225 prisoners - the equivalent of almost six battalions of troops. But, after heroically repelling SWAPO's invasion of Namibia in April 1989 (under direct authority from the United Nations) the unit was ignominiously disbanded and its black members disgracefully abandoned to take their chances at the hands of their former SWAPO enemies.
