General Jannie Geldenhuys is widely regarded as one of the leading military commanders South Africa has ever produced. As Chief of the South African Defence Force from 1985 to 1990 he brought his experience to bear on the South African Border War, and was part of the negotiating team which brought an end to the conflict in 1989. In this completely revised and updated edition, Geldenhuys reflects on a life defined as much by a military career spanning more than four decades as it was by politics and indeed the need for peace on the African sub-continent. At the Front covers the years before and during the protracted Border War. But rather than a blow-by-blow official history, it consists of Geldenhuys personal experiences and insights. These include facts unknown to civilians and even to some high-ranking military officials. In particular, Geldenhuys sheds light on the final years of the conflict and the negotiated settlement. Geldenhuys also writes of his early years, as he evolved from a rugby-mad young subaltern officer to a deep-thinking, reflective man with ever-sharpening insights into, war, peace, politics and, most of all, himself. Softcover, 394 pages. Published 2008  ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  General Johannes ('Jannie') Geldenhuys SSAS SD SOE SM GCIH ORB, is a former South African military commander who served as Chief of the South African Defence Force between 1985 and 1990. Later he went on to higher command in 1977, serving as commander of South West Africa Command, a post he held until 1980, when he served in the position of General Officer Commanding the South West African Territorial Force. After this he became Chief of the Army, before being promoted to the position of Chief of the South African Defence Force on the 31st of October 1985. In this role, he took part in negotiations that brought the Border War to an end in 1989, after 23 years of fighting.

This is the true story of a young guerrilla commander brought up in a Christian family in Rhodesia, a former colony of Britain. Exposed to the excesses of a colonial regime where race and racism determined ones status in society, and influenced by the radical anti-racial views of his parents and later of fellow students and work mates, his character began to change. A chance encounter with a captured guerrilla fighter helped complete the metamorphic transformation of his rebel character, and was catalytic to his decision to cross into Mozambique to join the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA), the military wing of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) led by Robert Mugabe, which was waging a protracted revolutionary armed struggle to liberate Zimbabwe. Known by his nom de guerre, Dragon Patiripakashata, he led several armed guerrilla incursions into Rhodesia, before being promoted to the General Staff and appointed an instructor. For the final eighteen months of the war, until 1980, he served as ZANUs Chief Representative to Socialist Ethiopia.  Mutambara invites the reader to view the Rhodesian bush war through the eyes of a guerrilla commander, experience the trials and tribulations of a freedom fighter, the satisfaction of working among the masses, and the joyous celebration of achieving freedom and independence. He outlines the psyche of those who engage in revolutionary armed struggle and why, even when exposed to extreme hardship and continual assault by a superior military adversary, they remain committed to their cause. This book also takes a different view of Mugabe, reviled by most Western governments and yet who remains immensely popular among his people PAPERBACK: 280 PAGES WITH 280 PAGES & 30 B/W PHOTOS & MAPS Published June 2014

Desert Raiders (SAS Operation) - Shaun Clarke - 2016 - Paperback as new. In the North African desert in 1941 the war is being won by the brilliant German commander General Rommel, and the British are in retreat on all fronts. A young British army lieutenant, David Stirling, believes that the only way to reverse this situation is to attack the enemy behind their own lines, using small groups of men who can insert by land, sea or air as required. The first of these men are dropped by parachute to attack enemy airfields in the Gazala area, but the raid is a disaster, with many lives lost. The following year, the survivors of that operation, now working hand in hand with the Long Range Desert Group, mount a series of spectacular raids in heavily armed jeeps against airfields in the Benghazi region, destroying nearly a hundred enemy aircraft, leaving the German army reeling, and reversing the course of the war. Desert Raiders is the colourful story of the birth of the SAS, the most renowned regiment in the history of the British Army – forged with fire and steel in the vast, sun-scorched plains of the North African desert, pitting themselves against the might of the formerly invincible German army, and gaining a reputation that will make them a legend in their own time.

VINTAGE LIFE SAVING GUARDS BADGE The girl guard program has its roots in Scouting. While stationed in India, British Army officer Robert Baden-Powell realized his men lacked the ability to perform first aid procedures and the basic skills for survival in the wild. In turn, he wrote a small handbook to teach army men first aid, outdoor survival tactics and leadership. The book caught the attention of young English boys, so Robert began to explore the possibility of developing a training program geared toward this age group. This was the foundation for the birth of the Boy Scouts. In 1913 Robert Baden-Powell invited General William Booth to become a member of the governing body of world scouting. The general saw great potential in the program for The Salvation Army and out of it inaugurated the Life Saving Scout Movement. This step marked the beginning of a multi-faceted troop program for boys and girls in The Salvation Army. The first girl guard troop sprouted in London, England, in 1915 and was called the Life-Saving Girl Guards. It reflected the structure and tenor of the Life Saving Scouts program. Much of the training was similar, but other focuses such as homemaking skills were included. The original Life-Saving Girl Guard badge featured a lamp, representing guarding the soul; an eye, representing guarding the mind; crossed clubs, representing guarding the body; Bible representing the importance of God in their lives; and a patrol of girls, representing guarding others. The motto was “To save and to serve.” After the first girl guard troop was inaugurated in the United States by National Commander Evangeline Booth in 1916, the program spread across the nation.   It is interesting to note that the American badge never had the bottom section with "To save and to serve" on it. That was purely UK and Europe.

2001 hardcover with 240 pages as new. By Fransjohan Pretorius. R50 postage in SA. Anglo-Boer War, Anglo-Boereoorlog. Christiaan De Wet, commander of the Boer forces in the Anglo-Boer War, had the ability to lead his burghers, many of them individualists, with a strong hand, subjecting them to his stringent discipline. He was also a masterful strategist who could anticipate the moves of his opponents. But it was his ability to evade the British forces in what became known as the "First De Wet Hunt" that contributed significantly to his legendary status. Lord Roberts, Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in South Africa, believed that the capture of De Wet would lead to the end of the Anglo-Boer War. When De Wet slipped over Slabberts Nek on July 15, 1900, breaking through Lieutenant General Sir Archibald Hunter's cordon and taking with him 2,000 Free Staters, including President Steyn and the government of the Orange Free State, Roberts organized a massive pursuit. From all sides British columns entered the chase. However, from July to August, 1900, De Wet, along with 2,500 men, managed to evade the elaborate net Lord Roberts had so carefully prepared to ensnare him. In so doing, the "Boer Pimpernel" ran rings around 50,000 British troops. Significantly, De Wet's successful evasion of the British ultimately led to the adoption of guerilla tactics by the Boers. This compelling story of a watershed event in the course of the war and the colorful personality of the man behind it is masterfully told, and brings an important personal dimension to the history of the Anglo-Boer War.
