Images are powerful tools in bringing about positive change and when complemented by evocative stories written by a team of committed writers, as in this book, the effect is even more intense. We lift the veil on rural farm life and invite you to experience, through pictures and words, a journey into rural South Africa." The titles have been chosen by one of Britain's best known and highly-acclaimed nature writers, Robert Macfarlane, who has also written new introductions that put these classics into a modern context. A Land is Jacquetta Hawkes' seminal work, and a classic piece of British Nature writing. It is the history of the shaping of Britain and its people from the first, lifeless, Pre-Cambrian rocks to the days of the ice-cream carton and the hydrogen bomb. First, as an archaeologist and geologist, Hawkes paints a picture of the creation of Britain from the very first forming of the earth's crust, through periods marked by lifeless worlds of rock, water and air, to the first emergence of life that senses its surroundings. The worms and trilobites mark the beginning of the story of life that evolves through the great reptiles, dinosaurs and finally humans. This is science writing at its very best. Engrossing stories, curious facts and powerful narrative combine under the umbrella of poetic writing and unadulterated passion for the subject. Widely lauded on its publication, this is an exposition of complex science in a way that is not just comprehensible, but also moving. Welcome to Mother Land: a suffocating kingdom of parental narcissism. This is an engrossing, hilarious and heartbreaking portrait of a modern family -- the bickering, the conspiracies, and the drive to overcome the painful ties that bind. Rarely does a piece of history emerge to tell a significant tale after nearly 70 years in a bedroom drawer. Recovered and brought back to Britain in 1945, a battered log book from a Canadian Red Cross parcel now reveals its long-held secrets through over a hundred hand-written stories. In 1942, two Canadian Army officers in Colditz Prison in Germany passed a blank hard-cover log book among their fellow officers, so that as many as possible could write their own accounts, to be printed after the war ended. Each fascinating page reveals vivid tales of hair-raising escapes, air, land and sea battles, bombing raids, ship sinkings, incarceration, deprivation and even amusing tales of everyday prison life. High-ranking officers from allied countries, and men from the ranks, all imprisoned in Colditz because of their prominent status or high risk of escape, have contributed to these pages. Although much of the content was printed in 1945 in Europe, the original text has only recently been rediscovered, retyped and reproduced. It now includes previously unseen accounts and illustrations. This historical text reveals the stories of courageous officers and men of Oflag IVC, finally bringing important tales into the light of day from within the walls of Colditz. A masterly meditation on trauma, on beauty, on the idea of home and the limits of love' Guardian Charlie's experiences at the Battle of Kohima and the months he spent lost in the remote jungles of Nagaland during the Second World War are now history. Home and settled on a farm in Norfolk and newly married to Claire, he is one of the lucky survivors. Starting a family and working the land seem the best things a man can be doing. But a chasm exists between them. Memories flood Charlie's mind; at night, on rain-slicked roads and misty mornings in the fields, the past can feel more real than the present. Though hidden even to himself, the darkest secrets of Charlie's adventures in the strange and shadowy ridges of the Nagaland mountains, his dream-like encounters with the mysterious and ancient tribesmen, leak and bleed through his consciousness. What should be said and what left unsaid? Is it possible to forge a new life in the wake of unfathomable horror? A beautifully conceived, deftly controlled and delicately wrought meditation on the isolating impact of war, the troubling legacies of colonialism and the inescapable reach of the past, Georgina Harding's haunting, lyrical novel questions the very nature of survival, and what it is that the living owe the dead. These are the opening words of the author's preface, which ends with a challenge to those who would like to join him in a journey through Africa from south to north. From Mendelssohn p 601 "Although the volume contains a description of a hunting trip through the Kalahari, the greater part of the work consists of a narrative of travels and adventures in the Transvaal. The author, an experienced sportsman, made arrangements with another keen hunter for a shooting expedition in 'Tropical Africa' with the intention of disembarking at Cape Town and taking a coaster to Walvisch Bay. This plan, however, did not prove feasible, and they decided to proceed up country via Natal.". Book No: 2501740

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Dotted across homes in Britain are people who were witnesses to one of the most tumultuous events of the twentieth century. Yet their memory of India's Partition has been shrouded in silence. Kavita Puri's father was twelve when he found himself one of the millions of Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims caught up in the devastating aftermath of a hastily drawn border. He remained silent - like so many - about the horrors he had seen for seventy years. When her father finally spoke out, opening up a forgotten part of Puri's family history, she was compelled to seek out the stories of South Asians who were once subjects of the British Raj, and are now British citizens. Determined to preserve these accounts - of the end of empire and the difficult birth of two nations - Puri records a series of remarkable first-hand testimonies, revealing Partition's enduring legacy in Britain today. With empathy, nuance and humanity, Puri weaves a breathtaking tapestry of human experience over a period of seven decades that trembles with life; an epic of ruptured families and friendships, extraordinary journeys and daring rescue missions that reverberates with pain, loss and compassion. The division of the Indian subcontinent happened far away, but it is a very British story. Many of those affected by Partition are now part of the fabric of British contemporary life. Partition Voices breaks the silence and confronts the difficult truths at the heart of Britain's shared history with South Asia.
