Images are powerful tools in bringing about positive change and when complemented by evocative stories written by a team of committed writers, as in this book, the effect is even more intense. We lift the veil on rural farm life and invite you to experience, through pictures and words, a journey into rural South Africa." It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days From the machair grasslands of the Outer Hebrides to the chalk cliffs of Kent, and from the dense pinewoods of Abernethy forest to the wetlands of the Fens of eastern England, Britain offers a richly varied array of habitats for our wild flowers. The distinguished science and natural history producer and filmmaker Steve Nicholls presents a visually stunning survey of Britain's best-loved wildflowers, illustrated with the his own beautiful photographs of flora in their habitat. Focusing on three broad habitats - grassland, open land and woodland - he offers a biologically rigorous but engagingly readable account of our wild flowers and the places that nourish them. He probes deep into the social and cultural history of wild flowers to tell a plethora of fascinating stories, from the 'daffodil trains' which transported Londoners to the 'golden triangle' in Gloucestershire to experience woodlands carpeted with wild daffodils, to the odd case of the Bath asparagus - which isn't an asparagus at all, but rather the edible flower buds of the rare spiked star of Bethlehem, which used to grow in abundance around Bath. She coined the term bonte veld which has become recognized as a veld type and is widely used. Recipient of the National Storytelling Networks Brimstone Award for Applied Storytelling, in recognition of the transformative properties of storytelling on individuals and communities. Traditional stories, with a twist of humor, take children on a journey borne on the wings of their imaginations, revealing knowledge and wisdom to help them care for Earth and live in harmony. Life is a journey. Who dares to enter The Garden of Wisdom to be tested? Who seeks to be moved by empathy and love to discover a place of caring and compassion for all living things? Who likes to laugh, and enjoys a great story? From the heights of Mount Hermon to the depths of the Dead Sea, the Middle East is a land of stories that convey life lessons that have been handed down through the generations: protection of endangered species, habitats, and water quality, the knowledge of healing plants, and the virtues of truth, justice, and generosity. Time-honored wisdom shows children how to live in kinship with Earth and humankind while celebrating the wonder and beauty of nature. Ten years in the making, these authentic tales were gathered from oral tradition among the traditional keepers of stories throughout the Middle East. Stories are arranged by theme: Animals, Plants, Friendship, Stewardship, and Wisdom.
