According to the decision of the castle within the old the walls and embankments with all the ancient fortifications, Russian and Polish gates, towers Stefan Batory was declared the state historical and cultural reserve and transferred to all the property that had historical and cultural significance, to the jurisdiction of the People's Commissariat of Education Ukrainian SSR. The proclamation of the fortress was an important reserve, but only a first step towards recognition of the protected throughout the territory of the old town. Other notable commemorative coins include the 2008 Nelson Mandela 90th birthday coin and the 20th anniversary of democracy coin, issued in 2014.   The R5 coin features an image of the original 1815 Griquatown coin, engraved with the words "Coinage of Griqua Town 200. 1815 – 2015".
