The Bedford Triangle portrays the crucial part played by the British Special Operations Executive, the US Army Air Force and the American Office of Strategic Services in operations behind enemy lines in occupied Europe during the Second World War. Milton Ernest Hall, a country house in Bedfordshire used officially as the UK headquarters of the US Army Air Force Service Command, was located at the heart of a network of top secret Allied Radio and propaganda transmitting stations, political warfare units and undercover British and American formations dealing in espionage and subterfuge. Martin Bowman draws upon revealing first-hand accounts, together with official documentary evidence, to provide tantalising glimpses of cloak and dagger operations. The author's extensive research has revealed that Allied Secret Service organisations participated in even more unorthodox activities, such as clandestine propaganda and political warfare. He also reveals the truth about what really happened to legendary band leader Glenn Miller.

The Luftwaffe was the aerial warfare branch of the German Wehrmacht during World War II. After the German Empire's World War I-era army air force, the Luftstreitkräfte, and the Kaiserliche Marine naval air units had been disbanded by May 1920 under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, the Luftwaffe was reformed on 26 February 1935 and grew to become one of the strongest, most doctrinally advanced, and most battle-experienced air forces in the world when World War II started in Europe in September 1939. After the defeat of the Third Reich, the Luftwaffe was disbanded in 1946. Luftwaffe is also the generic term in German speaking countries for any national military aviation service, and the names of air forces in other countries are usually translated into German as "Luftwaffe" (e.g. Royal Air Force is often translated as "britische Luftwaffe").

As the Soviet Union teetered on the edge of collapse during the late 1980s, and America prepared to claim its victory, a bloody war still raged in Southern Africa, where proxy forces from both sides vied for control of Angola. The result was the largest battle on the dark continent since Al Alamein, with forces from both sides paying in blood what U.S.-Soviet diplomats were otherwise spending in diplomacy. The socialist government of Angola and its army, FAPLA, fully stocked with Soviet weapons, had only to wipe out a massive resistance group, UNITA, secretly supplied by the U.S, in order to claim full sovereignty over the country. A giant FAPLA offensive so threatened to succeed in overcoming UNITA that apartheid-era South Africa stepped in to protect its own interests. The white army crossing the border prompted the Angolan government to call on their own foreign reinforcementsthe army of Communist Cubas. Thus began the epic battle of Cuito Cuanavale, largely unknown in the U.S., but which raged for three months in the entirely odd match-up of South African Boers vs. Castros armed forces, which for the first time in the Cold War proved what it could achieve. And it turned out the Cubans were very good. The South Africans were no slouches at warfare themselves, but had suffered under a boycott of weapons since 1977. The Cubans and Angolan troops, instead, had the latest Soviet weapons, easily delivered. But UNITA had its secret U.S. supply line and the South Africans knew how to fight, mainly at a disadvantage in air power for lack of spare parts. Meantime the Cubans overcame their logistic difficulties with an impressive airlift of troops over the Atlantic, while the Boers simply needed to drive next door. As a case study of ferocious fighting between East and Westalbeit proxies for the great powers on all sidesthis book unveils a remarkable episode of the end-game of the Cold War largely unknown to the public. The Angolans on both sides suffered heavily, but it was the apartheid South Africans versus Castros armed forces that provides utter fascination in one of historys rare match-ups. Paperback / 232 pages 54 b/w photos Published December 2013

Joel Nadel with JR Wright   1994. Hard cover with dust cover. 256 pages. Very good condition. Und er 1kg. This 256 pages volume charts the history of America's Army, Navy and Air Force special operations, which have been and are known to be involved with exciting, high-risk, high-profile mssions; and it is these activities that are detailed here through gripping, first-hand accounts. Some of these operations have never been described in print before. The book includes authentic oral accounts from special operations veterans, official after-action reports and information from other sources, all combined to provide the most detailed and complete history ever of the past half century (looking back from publication in 1994 that is) of special operations such as the U.S. Navy's Special Boat Units and SEAL platoons taking action in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean Basin, Latin America and the Middle East. Army special forces teams have travelled into the jungles of Vietnam to train indigenous tribesmen and conduct direct action missions against Viet Cong political and military structures. The targeted critical Cuban activities for attack by conventional forces before Grenada was invaded. US Air Force AC-130 Advanced spectre gunships were used in the 1990s over Iraq wreaking havoc against Iraqi fortified positions. Special Boat high-speed craft and Navy SEAL platoons conducted daring raids agains hostile Vietnamese, Panamanian and Kuwaiti shores in their respective conflicts, carrying out reconnaissance and infiltrating beach defences. Interestingly, this is thought to be the first book that looks at the history of special operations in relation to each other. With the recent establishment of the US Special Operations Command to synchronise the services' special operations, and recent successful missions, this book comes at the right time to give a proper understanding of the US special forces capabilities.
