Passiflora, known also as the passion flowers or passion vines, is a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants, the namesakes of the family Passifloraceae. They are mostly vines, with some being shrubs, and a few species being herbaceous. A number of species of Passiflora are cultivated outside their natural range for their beautiful flowers and delicious edible fruit. Hundreds of hybrids have been named; hybridizing is currently being done extensively for flowers, foliage and fruit. Most species have round or elongated edible fruit from 5cm to 20cm long and 2.5cm to 5cm across, depending upon the species or cultivar.         Passiflora will adjust to any kind of soil, except desert conditions or very alkaline soil. Prefers full sun but will do with a light place or even half-shade. Passiflora need abundant watering during the growing season. In winter watering can significantly be reduced but good soil moisture must be maintained. Passiflora edulis is a vine species of passion flower that is native to Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina. Its common names include Passion Fruit, Passionfruit and Purple Granadilla. It is cultivated commercially in tropical and subtropical areas for its edible sweet, seedy fruit and is widely grown in several countries of South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, Southern Asia, Israel, Australia, Hawaii and United States. The passion fruit is round to oval, either yellow or dark purple at maturity, with a soft to firm, juicy interior. The fruit is both eaten and juiced; passion fruit juice is often added to other fruit juices to enhance aroma.

Passiflora caerulea (blue passion flower, common passion flower) is a species of flowering plant native to South America (Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil). It is a vigorous, deciduous or semi-evergreen tendril vine growing to 10 m (33 ft) or more, with palmate leaves and fragrant, blue-white flowers with a prominent fringe of coronal filaments in bands of blue, white, and brown. The ovoid orange fruit, growing to 6 cm, is edible but bland. P. caerulea is a woody vine capable of growing to 1520 m high where supporting trees are available. The leaves are alternate, palmately five-lobed like a spread hand (sometimes three or seven lobes), 1018 cm long and wide. The base of each leaf has a flagellate-twining tendril 510 cm long, which twines around supporting vegetation to hold the plant up. The flower is complex, about 10 cm in diameter, with the five sepals and petals similar in appearance, whitish in colour, surmounted by a corona of blue or violet filaments, then five greenish-yellow stamens and three purple stigmas. The fruit is an oval orange-yellow berry 6 cm long by 4 cm in diameter, containing numerous seeds; it is eaten, and the seeds spread by mammals and birds. It is edible to humans, but bland in flavour. In tropical climates, it will flower all year round. This classic yet contemporary wine blend, comprising three cultivars, is a celebration of nature. The varieties each lend their own character to the wine. The Semillon starts as a youthful, fresh green leafy flavour that will mature into honeyed, waxy flavours as the wine evolves. The Sauvignon Blanc adds a tropical fruit and green apple flavour with a zesty acidity. The Viognier supports the acid with richness and stone fruit flavours that will become more prominent as the wine ages in the bottle. Since the days of Simon van der Stel, the land at L'Avenir has been planted with vines. In 1992, Mauritian born Marc Wiehe bought the farm and founded L'Avenir and by 1997, the farm was ranked best at that year's Chenin Blanc Challenge. Paying tribute to the terroir of Stellenbosch, L'Avenir focuses primarily on producing the heritage Chenin Blanc and the innovative, local varietal, Pinotage. Vineyard region: three different blocks of select clones have been positioned on the highest slopes of the farm. This elevated placement allows the vines to benefit from the cool sea-breezes that drift from the False Bay coast towards Stellenbosch. In addition, the ridge of decomposed granite and shale - from which the soil is derived – provides an ideal environment for Sauvignon Blanc to develop its unique character Vintage: an early & hot ripening period lead to fast sugar accumulation & harvest taking place approximately 3 weeks earlier than in the past. Still, the grapes showed beautiful natural acidity & lush aromas Grape varieties: 100% Sauvignon Blanc (L’Avenir Grapes) Tasting: full of fresh tropical flavours of pineapple and white pear, with notes of ripe summer melon and a subtle grassy note. A very natural, refreshing acidity Appearance: a clear, crisp very pale gold Nose: intense tropical aromas of guava and pineapple with just a hint of lemongrass Palate: a refreshing acidity and elegant tropical fruit chased by refreshing acidity that lingers on the palate
