TRANSVAAL/ZAR POSTAL AGENCIES: AIRLIE IN SOUTH AFRICA
This railway station between Waterval Onder and Godwanrivier on the Eastern Line was originally named “Nooitgedacht” but was changed to Airlie in honour of Lieutenant-Colonel, the Earl of Airlie, Commanding Officer of the 12 th Lancers, who was killed at the battle of “Diamond Hill” or “Donkerhoek”, which took place on the 11 th and 12 th of June 1900 east of Pretoria. A rail office was operational between 1905 and 1908. The post card above was sent from Airlie (Station) (25-09-1907) via Waterval Onder to Middelburg (26-09-1907). Rated "RRR" by Putzel. Scarce strike.
