Operation Winback (PS2) Platform: PlayStation2 Condition: New Other versions of this game available from us: Platform: Pre-Owned/Used: Very Good Condition copies available Product Description Review If you can play Operation Winback for more than five minutes without thinking of Metal Gear Solid then you're either suffering from amnesia or probably refer to all video games as "Space Invaders" and have only turned the PS2 on by accident thinking it was the VCR. It's kind of a cross between the stealthy shoot-'em-up bits in Metal Gear Solid and a more arcade style game like Time Crisis. Unfortunately this means it's Time Crisis without the non-stop action and Metal Gear Solid without the variety and complex storyline. Oh, and the main bad guy is called Kenneth and the elite commando team to which you belong is known as SCAT. Although Operation Winback is less than the sum of its parts it's still fun. Hiding behind crates and jumping out to shoot unsuspecting bad guys is undoubtedly entertaining, even if the slightly fiddly controls sometimes get in the way. Unfortunately there's not much more to the game than that so it does get rather repetitive--although the various multiplayer modes do make up for this to some degree. If you can't wait for Metal Gear Solid 2 then this is a reasonable but not outstanding stopgap. -- David Jenkins Manufacturer's Description You are dropped by a careering helicopter gunship directly into the terrorist base. The original mission must still be accomplished; the world's safety depends on it. You don't know where your comrades are or whether they are alive at all. It will take all your cunning, stealth and ingenuity to survive; your skill as a commando will determine the fate of the world. As Jean Luc Cougar - member of the elite S.C.A.T commando force. Your mission is to regain control of the GULF Strategic Weapons System, Mission Winback. This satellite is capable of destroying several square miles at a time and it's in dangerous hands! The satellite's destructive capabilities have earned it the nickname "Sword of Angels". The terrorists make no demands. They plan to attack the European country of Argent indiscriminately. One of the development team's goals was to provide a new playing experience for shooting game fans. The decision was made to go with an over-the-shoulder view because it gives players more control over character movements than the traditional first person shooter. Only a 3rd person view could accurately represent all of the motions, including the thrilling "swing-out" feature, which allows players to use walls and objects for cover; pop out to squeeze off a few rounds and then drop back under cover as the enemy retaliates. The sighting mechanism also benefits from this third person point of view. WinBack uses a laser sighting technique rather than the traditional crosshairs method. Once mastered, this allows for precise control over where you aim and therefore fire. This perspective also allows for other cool effects, such as flashlights attached to your weapons to light up dark areas. Another feature, which sets this title apart from previous Covert Operations games, is the freedom to approach each mission in different ways. There may be times when it is more prudent to use stealth and take out enemies quickly and quietly, but there may also be times when players feel that blasting their way through enemy lines with sheer force is the most expedient course. This freedom provides a high level of player interaction for a more thrilling, more player-orientated gaming experience.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (Xbox) Platform: Xbox Condition: New Other versions of this game available from us: Platform: Pre-Owned/Used: Very Good Condition copies available Product Information 20 missions situated in exotic locations Choice of 1st or 3rd person viewpoints Mid-mission save options Enhanced inventory system shopping New ranking system Multiple styles of play Massive arsenal of weapons Advanced level design & engine dynamics Product Description Review Eidos' stylish, strategic and almost puzzle-like Hitman 2 makes its console debut, managing to address many of the criticisms that haunted the PC original while still falling short of its potential. The premise sets up the player as a genetically modified hit man, forced out of retirement when things get a little personal. Each level then sets up an overall mission, broken down into sub-objectives, thankfully with a much-requested save-game feature included in case things get a little hairy. This isn't your standard walk-and-shoot kind of game, though; Hitman 2 rewards planning, and lots of it. While there's no fixed linear route through any of the levels, each will require a lot of thought to be defeated. What limits the game's potential though is the continual stream of frustrations. The enemy's artificial intelligence, for instance, is sometimes very sadly lacking, and there are occasions when the pace drops to snail-like speed, without always generating sufficient tension to carry the player through. That said, when it hits top gear Hitman 2 can be tense, atmospheric and enjoyable. Graphically it's very polished, and those who enjoy games that reward solid thinking more than an itchy trigger finger will certainly find something to enjoy. But while undoubtedly a step forward from its predecessor, it's an ambitious game that still falls short of what could have been. Put simply, it's good, it's challenging, but it still leaves quite a lot of room for improvement. -- Jon Foster

Worms Blast Platform: PlayStation2 Condition: New Other versions of this game available from us: Platform: Pre-Owned/Used: Very Good Condition copies available Product Information 3D Worms characters with serious delusions of grandeur Use madcap weapons (over 30 to choose from) Random weather conditions add to the challenge. A wide variety of game modes It¿¿¿¿¿s a battle of survival! Product Description Review Worms Blast is not a bad game. It's also not a very good game. What it is is possibly the most painfully average and obviously derivative game to be released all year. The regular Worms titles continue to be among the most popular party games around, but this is not a regular Worms title; this is a clone of Bust-A-Move (aka Puzzle Bobble) with the Worms license plastered unconvincingly atop of it. In Bust-A-Move you have to shoot different coloured bubbles up the screen so that they collide with the large collection of bubbles that are slowly descending towards you. If you connect bubbles of the same colour together then they disappear, and the idea is to clear the whole screen of the little multi-coloured spheres. Worms Blast is exactly the same except that you shoot different coloured bullets at coloured blocks. So, Worms Blast is pretty much identical--except that it's no fun. Having to move your character left and right across the screen is annoying and the controls, ridiculously simple as they are, still manage to be fiddly and counter-intuitive. Unless you have a thing for cartoon invertebrates there's not much point buying Worms Blast considering that Bust-A-Move is still available and cheaper, so try that out instead--it really is much better. -- David Jenkins Manufacturer's Description The aim of the game is to survive, either longer than your opponent or until one player has reached a set objective. Worms Blast gives us our fifth trip to the Worms universe. You control a team of worms, squaring off against opposing worm teams--either AI or human-controlled--in a kill-them-before-they-kill-you fight. As always in the series, Worms Blast tests players' thinking, skill, reflexes, forward planning and nerve. Control your characters of choice--nine hand-picked individuals with serious delusions of grandeur. Cross the world to crush your opponents.

Vietcong Platform: Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows Me, Windows XP Condition: New Other versions of this game available from us: Platform: Pre-Owned/Used: Very Good Condition copies available Product Information An evolving storyline and intense sound system that captures the danger Lead as many as six expertly trained soldiers through 20 dramatic missions Full-featured multiplayer mode allows gamers to play as U.S. Special Forces or Vietcong soldiers Choose from more than 25 weapons, including M16¿¿¿¿¿s, grenade launchers and sniper rifles Players can order air strikes or ambush enemy patrols Product Description Set during the Vietnam War, Vietcong is a first-person shooter with tactical elements, combining thrilling action with strategic thinking. The evolving storyline combined with the game's intense sound system, graphics and animation truly bring powerful jungle combat to life on your PC. Acting as an elite soldier, you command the A-team, part of the US Special Forces, in realistically represented Vietnamese environments. Players will lead as many as six expertly trained soldiers through 20 dramatic missions, and follow a storyline that captures the danger, fear and unpredictability of the war itself. The full-featured multiplayer mode also allows gamers to play as US Special Forces or Vietcong soldiers and to battle over specially designed levels. In Vietcong the player chooses from more than 25 weapons, including M16s, grenade launchers and sniper rifles. Players can order air strikes or ambush enemy patrols, but success ultimately depends on their ability to keep a level head in the thick of intense action. Review Laden with expletives from the off, Vietcong is as far removed from a friendly family game as you can get. A gritty first-person shooter set in the midst of the Vietnam conflict, it's a brutal, engrossing game that needs one beast of a PC to be fully appreciated. The Vietcong of the title are a crack fighting force, who put up some substantial resistance in the challenging single-player game. You can also, in multi-player mode, switch sides and pit your wits against the American forces. However, you don't have to play with humans to get a team-based feeling. The single-player mode at times demands that you lead a small team of fighters, although that's just one of the cocktail of tricks it throws at you. The game's 20 missions generate really quite varied gameplay. If you've played other titles of a similar genre, you'll probably be familiar with the drill. Some require you to go out on attack, some require you to defend your positions and others involve more snooping and searching. At their best, the missions really are excellent; they're involving, deeply satisfying and offer a sturdy but enjoyable challenge. On the flip side, they can be a little uneven in tone. There are times when you can go a little too long without a sniff of action, for instance, and things can get quite frustrating. But overall impressions are still very positive. The AI is strong, and the atmosphere the game generates is particularly engrossing. A varied arsenal of weapons helps add to the adrenaline-pumping action moments. Ultimately, if you've got a beefy PC and enjoy your first-person shooters, Vietcong should be at the top of your shopping list. - Simon Brew
