It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Support for civil society has become a major concern for development agencies. However, there has been confusion about the role of non-governmental development organizations (NGOs) in civil society. Sometimes, the funding of NGOs has simply been re-phased as support for civil society. Yet NGOs form only one group of organizations within civil society. Often they are funded from external sources and lack local legitimacy and accountability. This book contains papers by practitioners and researchers that examine the role of NGOs in civil society. It includes general thematic papers on civil society, case studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America and Eastern Europe, and papers that analyze initiatives undertaken by Northern NGOs and donors in democratization programmes in the South. The stimulus for this book was an INTRAC workshop to reflect on the implications of the new civil society policy agenda for NGOs, especially for countries undergoing major political transition. Features Summary Support for civil society has become a major concern for development agencies. However, there has been confusion about the role of non-governmental development organizations (NGOs) in civil society... This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days An accurate, thought provoking translation of original work from sociologist pioneer Tongo Takebe Today's sociology education emphasizes multiculturalism, yet most of the views originate from Judeo-Christian perspectives that can limit insight and understanding. Japanese Family and Society: Words from Tongo Takebe, A Meiji Era Sociologist presents a carefully edited, accurate translation by Teruhito Sako of original work from the early Japanese sociologist Tongo Takebe. His unique viewpoint sheds light on both Eastern and Western perspectives used to describe societal development and a classification system of knowledge. This easily understandable source retains the essences of this classical Japanese social theorist's work while giving an excellent overview of Eastern and Western social theory and philosophy and discussion of major scientific advances from the earliest eras until 1900. Japanese Family and Society is a translation of Takebe's General Sociology: Introduction (1904, Volume 1) and an excerpt from General Sociology: Social Statistics (1909, Volume 3). In Volume 1, Takebe reviews the accomplishments of major Eastern and Western scholars. Systematically, Takebe discusses the major scientific advances in physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, history, economics, philosophy, anthropology, political science, and sociology to develop criteria for a classification system of knowledge. In the excerpt from Volume 3, Takebe discusses family relationships. In these translations, Takebe focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of both Eastern and Western viewpoints of societal development in which he demonstrates the advantages of combining these perspectives. Topics in Japanese Family and Society include: * a brief history of Japanese society * early Japanese sociologists * a biography of Tongo Takebe * theoretical introduction to sociology, sociology's problems, and methodology * historical introduction to the sociological ideas in Japan, China, Indian thought, Ancient Greece, Medieval Europe, and the Modern era * the rise of socialism * major accomplishments in various disciplines * family organization, including marital relationships, parent-child relationships, sibling relationships, and others * much more Japanese Family and Society can be used as a text or supplemental text for upper level undergraduate courses in social theory, sociology, philosophy, history, and social science. Features Summary Although multiculturalism is stressed in modern sociology education, most perspectives continue to be influenced by Judeo-Christian ideas. Tongo Takebe's work presents an alternative approach to the study of societal development & the role of family. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days For the Seneca Iroquois Indians, song is a crucial means of renewing both medicine and heritage. Two or three times a year, the Little Water Medicine Society of western New York meets to renew the potency of its medicine bundles through singing. These bundles have been inherited from eighteenth century Iroquois war parties, handed down from generation to generation. In this long-awaited book, William N. Fenton describes the remarkable ceremonies of one of the least recorded but most significant medicine societies of the Iroquois Indians. Most of the Senecas who were members of the Little Water Society, or Society of Shamans, have passed away, and their knowledge of ceremonial healing and spiritual renewal is fading. Fenton has written this book to preserve knowledge of the ceremonies and songs for the Iroquois people and as a contribution to anthropology, folklore, ethnomusicology, and American Indian studies. In The Little Water Medicine Society of the Senecas, he presents his original 1933 fieldwork, along with details from the published and unpublished works of other researchers, to describe rituals, poetry, and songs drawn from his more than six decades of research among the Six Nations. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days The basic premise of "Social Statistics for a Diverse Society, Sixth Edition", is that substance and statistical techniques are truly related in social science research. Therefore, the authors have tried to integrate clear explanations of statistical techniques with issues of particular relevance to society. The substantive focus of this book recognizes that students live in a world characterized by a growing diversity and richness of social differences. Using straightforward prose and emphasizing intuition and common sense, this book teaches basic statistics while incorporating real research examples related to the dynamic interplay of race, class, gender and other social variables within our society and our global neighbors. The text includes resources designed to support effective teaching: illustrations showing how statistical concepts are used to interpret social issues, guides for reading and interpreting the research literature, SPSS demonstrations, and a rich variety of exercises. This title provides a close link between the practice of statistics, important social issues, and real-world examples. This shows students that in the social sciences there is a constant interplay between social concerns and the methods of inquiry and investigation. It provides a informal writing style - coupled with the use of real-world example, the conversational writing style results in a book that is more accessible and engaging for students. A focus on race, class, gender and other aspects of social diversity is threaded throughout the book, and sets the book apart from others in the field and mirrors the major emphasis in the social sciences today. Reading the Research Literature sections in most chapters help students read and interpret statistical information in professional and scholarly publications. Integration and Review Chapters on the accompanying CD-ROM bundled with the text review the two halves of the book for descriptive and inferential statistics. Boxes and Learning Checks in chapters - Throughout the book are boxes containing information on statistics in practice and insightful tips on using various techniques. The Learning Checks allow students to test their understanding of concepts just presented. Emphasis on Computing SPSS for Windows is used throughout the book in conjunction with General Social Survey data to introduce students to one of the most commonly used analytical software packages in the field. At the end of each chapter is a demonstration of a related SPSS procedure, along with a set of exercises. Features Summary Emphasizes intuition and common sense, while demonstrating the link between the practice of statistics and important social issues. About the product Number 206 of an edition limited to 510 copies, a facsimile reprint of the 1825 printing by W. Bridekirk. 8vo; original brown rexine gilt; pp. (vi) + 24. Regular browning throughout. Very good condition. (SABIB 4, p. 317 [1st and 2nd printings])"It is interesting, though not surprising, to find that in 1824, the year when, in spite of all the efforts of Pringle and Greig, Lord Charles Somerset succeeded in suppressing the free press in Cape Town, an attempt was made, sponsored by the same circle of independent-minded citizens, to found a South African Literary Society. Sixty-one citizens of distinction became members, and Thomas Pringle was appointed temporary secretary. It was essential to have the approval of the Governor, however, so Somerset was respectfully requested to become Patron of the Society. Ever suspicious of anything inaugurated by the'rebel'Pringle, Somerset began by refusing that honour, and proceeded to forbid the establishment of the Society, on the grounds that it'might have a tendency to produce political discussion'. The very rare contemporary documents dealing with this episode are now re-published after the lapse of 140 years. They are of great historical interest, particularly for the contrast they reveal between the alert-minded members who sought to pursue cultural activities, and the despotic and ultra-conservative Governor." Papers of the South African Literary Society, 1824 (Thomas (secretary) Pringle)

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Confucianism is the guiding creed for a quarter of mankind, yet hardly anyone has explained it in plain terms - until now. Written in a style both intelligible and enjoyable for the global audience, The Great Equal Society distils the core ideas of the major Confucian classics and shows how their timeless wisdom can be applied to the modern world. It also introduces pragmatic suggestions emanating from Confucius and his followers for ensuring good governance, building a humane economy and educating moral leaders. The book's core message of inner morality, first expounded by Confucius millennia ago, will resonate on both sides of the Pacific, and its sweeping survey of the hot topics today - dysfunctional government, crony capitalism, and the erosion of ethics in both Wall Street and Main Street, among others - will breathe new life to Confucian teachings while providing much-needed answers to our urgent social problems. The Great Equal Society is written by Young-oak Kim, a Korean thinker whom Wikipedia describes as "the nation's leading philosopher dealing with public issues and explaining Oriental philosophy to the public," and Jung-kyu Kim, a talented trilingual writer who has published works in English, Japanese and Korean.
