They are politically part of French Polynesia. The archipelago is suspected to have been named by Captain James Cook supposedly in honour of the Royal Society, the sponsor of the first British scientific survey of the islands; however, Cook himself stated in his journal that he called the islands Society "as they lay contiguous to one another."The islands became a French protectorate in 1843 and a colony in 1880. They have a population of 235,295 inhabitants (as of 2012). They cover a land area of 1,590 square kilometres (610 sq mi). A Large Silver Award Medal from the Witwatersrand Agricultural Society. Awarded to H.A. Melle in 1954 for 'Postills Matilda' Champion Large Black Sow or Gilt. Made by the South African Mint. Further information at South African Medals. Sterling silver. Stamped: "STG", "S.A.M" and the date letter F for 1953 at the bottom of the reverse.  Diameter 38.1 mm. Mass 27.5 gm. The Large Black Pig is thought to be almost extinct and in South Africa it is unlikely that any purebred animals still exist.  Note: I am listing another award medal to this Free State breeder of Large Black Pigs.

Lawrence Richardson, selections from whose correspondence comprise this volume, was a member of the Society of Friends who was involved in two fact-finding and humanitarian missions to South Africa soon after the Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1900). His correspondence records meetings with some of the celebrities of the times - Emily Hobhouse, Mrs Koopmans-de Wet, Milner, Goold-Adams, Sargant, Botha, Smuts and Hertzog. His meticulous diaries detail his interviews and draw a perceptive picture of a society devastated by war. In the exergue: “EX UNITATE VIRES.” Reverse: Ox wagon pulled by four oxen moving to the right through the veldt; man with whip and dog trotting alongside. Mountains and radiant sun in the background. Signed just above the exergue line: “E.N. (left) R.M.P (right)”. In an arc above: “JOHANNESBURG - 1886”. In the curved exergue: “EENDRAGT MAAKT MAGT” Notes: Johannesburg hosted the Empire Exhibition, held in Milner Park between September 1936 and January 1937. Milner Park (now part of the University of Witwatersrand) is the home of the annual Witwatersrand Agricultural Society Show, first opened by Paul Kruger in 1894. The exhibition coincided with the City’s Golden Anniversary. The centrepiece of the layout of gardens, buildings and pathways was the 200 feet tall “Tower of Light” which could be seen at night from anywhere on the Rand.
