They are housed in a velvet-lined Yellow wood and Stinkwood presentation case. Cast from STG-grade sterling silver, they are plated in 24 carat gold. These reproductions were strictly limited to sets world-wide. Medieval Silver 'Long Cross' Penny - Edward I (1239-1307) Ref. 26JA       Edward 1st, also known as Edward Longshanks due to his height and The Hammer of the Scots, ruled England from 1272 to 1307. Born in 1239, he was the first son of Henry III. He had a sickly childhood but lived for close on 70 years.  His last encounter was against Robert the Bruce of Scotland but he died before reaching Scotland. Respected by his subjects as a soldier, an administrator and in the manner in which he ruled England, he was also brutal in many ways, having expelled the Jews and felt no remorse in his cruelty against the Scots. He proclaimed himself a 'man of faith' but fell out with the clergy. Nevertheless he established parliament as a permanent institution and created a functional system of taxes. He conquered the Welsh and almost conquered the Scots.         The coin shown above was found by metal detecting in Britain. It is silver and measures roughly 18mm in diameter and weighs 1.26 grams. In good condition, but showing some slight damage to the edge and slight loss of wording on the obverse side.  Please note that the coin shows the 'tri-foil' fleurs on the side of the crown, a good method of identification that this is NOT a Edward II or Edward III coin. This is a 'Hammered" coin - Hammered coins were produced by placing a thin sheet of metal, either gold, silver, bronze or copper, between two dies, and striking the top die as to create an  image on each side. The 'Long Cross' design was introduced by Edward I.  Silver coins, in the Medieval age, were often 'clipped', having thin slivers of silver removed from the coin. These slivers were eventually melted down and sold. The 'Long Cross' was an attempt to stop this practice, in that, if the coin did not show the complete 'cross' it would not be accepted. Unfortunately, this did not work, and coins were still subjected to 'clipping'.       Please note - I am NOT a numismatist, but, from my research, I believe this coin is dated  and identified correctly.  Lot of 13  Sterling Silver 3 Pence & a single Copper One Penny recovered from a river in Natal. - The 13  Three Pence pieces are dated from 1928 to 1943. Showing signs of water erosion to surface. - The single Copper One Penny is dated 1921,  and shows signs of water edge damage.   PLEASE NOTE, THESE COINS WERE DISCOVERED ALONG A MAJOR RIVER  IN KWAZULU-NATAL.   1892 ZAR PENNY An UNC coin whose owner had a serious issue with it? Brilliantly struck. Full almost perfect detail. Unfortunately used as a blank canvas for an 'artist'. Not sure of the provenance of the inscriptions and artwork. A very interesting part that I had only noticed when I photographed this coin, is the "figure 8" like shape around the 7 o clock mark. I am not sure if this coin was minted like this. If so, this would be an interesting error on this coin.
