Mandela 1 Kilogram Silver Currently trading at R27,000.00. Mintage Worldwide: 5,000 The Mandela Kilogram medallion is extremely unique and one of its kind. The 1 Kilogram Silver Mandela, which is the 5th coin in the world, bears the signature of Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela was incarcerated on Robben Island for 18 years and for that reason the Mint of Norway have minted a 1 kilogram silver medallion in order to commemorate the sacrifice which Nelson Mandela made for democracy in South Africa. This is the first time that Nelson Mandela has been immortalised on a 1 kilogram silver medallion. The obverse (front) of this exquisite collectable portrays the bust of Nelson Mandela which has been gold plated, and which has never been done before. The words Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela are inscribed around the outside and the now famous phrase “A Long Walk To Freedom” is inscribed next to Nelson Mandela’s bust. The obverse (back) of this highly sought after medallion portrays an image of Robben Island which is also gold plated, as well as the words Robben Island. The years that Nelson Mandela spent incarcerated on Robben Island are inscribed at the bottom. The signature of Nelson Mandela appears between the 1964 and 1982.

2010 ROBBEN ISLAND Historically Important Heritage Site 1 KILOGRAM PROOF SILVER MEDALLION IN A PIANO VARNISH BOX  WITH A CLEAR WINDOW INSERT WITH A CERTIFICATE AT AN ASTONISHINGLY LOW PRICE ROBBEN ISLAND As of 2 April 2019, Robben Island has officially been declared a Marine Protected Area by the Department of Environmental Affairs. Robben Island has not only been used as a prison. It was a training and defence station in World War II (1939-1945) and a hospital for leprosy patients, and the mentally and chronically ill (1846-1931). In the 1840s, Robben Island was chosen for a hospital because it was both secure (isolating dangerous cases) and healthy (providing a good environment for cure). During this time, political and common-law prisoners were still kept on Robben Island. As there was no cure and little effective treatment available for leprosy, mental illness and other chronic illnesses in the 1800s, Robben Island was a kind of prison for the hospital patients too.   Since 1997 Robben Island has been a museum. The museum on the Island is a dynamic institution, which acts as a focal point of South African heritage. The Robben Island Museum runs educational programmes for schools, youths and adults, facilitates tourism development, conducts ongoing research related to Robben Island and fulfils an archiving function. Stellenbosch University Silver Medallion 1866-1966 Hoer onderwyser op Stellenbosch A lovely sterling silver medallion, commemorating the 100 year anniversary of Stellenbosch University in 1966. This is a high quality medallion, with beautiful stylised engraving. The front depicts the "Ou Hoofgebou" (Old Main Building), the oldest building on campus, built in 1886, in Cape classical style, with collonaded veranda and ornamental balcony. This is surrounded with "HOER ONDERWYS OP STELLENBOSCH 1866-1966", translated Higher Education at Stellenbosch. The back has the Stellenbosch University Coat of Arms under "UNIVERSITEIT VAN STELLENBOSCH", this was adopted in 1918, described as "Quarterly: I and IV: Or, three towers gules 2 and 1; II: Azure, the head of the Roman goddess Minerva wearing a winged helmet, argent; III: Azure, three oak twigs each with two leaves below and an acorn above, argent, 2 and 1; Upon an inescutcheon sable, an open book proper, with a red initial letter S in upper dexter, and with two seals, one red and one blue, pendant from the book (source www.andrewcusack.com). The 3 towers comes from the Stellenbosch town arms, originated from the personal arms of Governor Simon van der Stel who founded the town in 1679. Minerva symbolises learning, and the oak leaves and acorns the magnificent oak trees still found in Stellenbosch today. The hallmarks are clear, and include Lions head in U (South African sterling mark post 1948), STG sterling mark, date letter S for 1966 and makers mark SAM for South African Mint.
