After the abduction by the US military of an Islamic religious leader, New York City becomes the target of escalating terrorist attacks. Anthony Hubbard, the head of the FBI's Counter-Terrorism Task Force in New York, teams up with CIA operative Elise Kraft to hunt down the terrorist cells responsible for the attacks. As the bombings continue, the US government responds by declaring martial law, sending US troops, led by Gen. Devereaux, into the streets of New York City.

How We Kept the Flag Flying: The Story of the Siege of Ladysmith   by Donald Macdonald 1999 - 289 pages Hard Cover in Good Condition.A Covos Books Anglo-Boer War Centenary Edition Excerpt from How We Kept the Flag Flying: The Story of the Siege of Ladysmith In this book I have attempted no specialist's description of the siege and battles of Ladysmith, but have given just the every-day impressions and sensations of an observer to whom war, with all its thrilling incidents and vivid colour, was a new and strange experience. It is not so much a history of the siege as a story of the siege written while the events were fresh in the mind. In a calm retrospective view much might be added, much omitted, but the complete military history of Ladysmith may be left to the historian and the expert. Without being consciously in error, I have sought to give the reader some idea of the moods and colour of the time. In the multiplicity of names there may be some confusion; thus I have spoken of the fight at Rietfontein as Tinta Inyoni, and of Wagon Hill as Caesar's Hill, since local opinion always differed as to which was correct. With a full appreciation of the patriotism and pride of race which has made Australasia a fighting unit in the British Empire, I dedicate this book to my fellow-countrymen who took part in the South African Campaign.

The Longest Siege - Tobruk, The Battle that saved North Africa by Robert Lyman   Beginning on 10th April 1941, and lasting for 240 days, the siege of Tobruk is a mesmerising tale of human endurance and heroism. It is an epic story of extraordinary resilience as the Libyan port's 24,000 defenders met increasingly desperate attempts by Rommel's Panzer divisions to break through the hurriedly thrown-up defences. It was a battle of bayonets and grenades against tanks, of David versus Goliath. The eventual allied victory came against overwhelming odds, plus the morale sapping knowledge that the defenders were surrounded on one side by the sea, and on the other by Hitler's men and machines (who, only the year before, had brought Western Europe to its knees). Tobruk was defended in the main by the Australian 9th Division, followed by the British 70th Infantry Division who then linked up with the advancing 8th Army. The Royal Navy also played an important role in Tobruk's defence. By December 1941 Rommel had been beaten and forced to withdraw his forces from Cyrenaica. The siege was lifted and the exhausted, gallant defenders able to march out in triumph.   First edition softcover published 2009, 310 pages illustrated with black and white photographs. In read but otherwise good condition with minor foxing.

"This remarkable diary covering the Siege of Kimberley and its aftermath was written by the German missionary, Carl Meyer. It is an important addition to the literature dealing with this historical event as it presents a unique insight into the effect of the war on social conditions of the time. Meyer, a politically neutral person, committed himself tirelessly not only to the welfare of his flock, but also to the fair treatment of all parties involved in the war, regardless of race or political affiliation. The reader is drawn into the everyday problems besetting the dedicated and selfless pastor, a man who never spared himself and in consequence passed away the day before the armstice of the South African Anglo-Boer War. It is a human interest story which will be enjoyed by the layman as well as the academic. The manuscript of the diary was sent to Germany in in the mailboat, Mexican, which was sunk. Fortunately the diary was salvaged from the mailbag in a poor but legible condition. Very few of the original printed copies have survived; one of these was donated to the Kimberley Africana Library by the council chairman of the German Lutheran Church in ". Size: Octavo. SIGNED.   Anthony Blond, London, 1959. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: poor, edge-chipped, loss at head and foot of spine and bottom corners. Second Impression. Dust jacket price clipped, some closed chips. Black cloth with gilt titling on spine. Map end papers. Photographs on plates. 255 pages clean and tight. Size: 8vo. The Siege of Tobruk lasted longer than the Siege of Mafeking. This fly-blown, dust-ridden Lybian port was the only harbour between Bengazi and Alexandria and became crucial as the only stumbling-block preventing Rommel's sweep forward to the Nile. The centre of a shuttlecock war Tobruk was captured by Wavell in 1940, became a beleaguered fortress for 242 days until its garrison was relieved in November 1941 by Auchinleck. Churchill and his War Cabinet in Whitehall with a fine sense of unreality ordered that " Tobruk must be held to the death." It was. The Australians under Major General Morshead fought like tigers, but a year later another garrison of 30,000 men in Tobruk commanded by Major General Klopper surrendered to Rommel in twenty-four hours. Why? There were rumours of high-ranking officers on Klopper's staff surrendering to Rommel blind drunk, of native African troops pillaging the rum stores and being shot out of hand by their captors, and of Company Commanders deserting their men... a Court of Enquiry was held in Cairo but its findings remain secret. Now, after seventeen years, Anthony Heckstall-Smith who was himself a Flotilla Officer of the "A" Lighters which victualled the garrison at fantastic cost in men and ships, has sifted evidence from officers of all units involved-Australian, South African, German and British-in order to write a controversial and thrilling story of men in battle.

The Russo–Japanese War (1904–05) was fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden in Southern Manchuria and the seas around Korea, Japan and the Yellow Sea. The Battle/Blockade/Siege of Port Arthur was the major engagement of the War. Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett was an English war correspondent during the First World War. Through his reporting of the Battle of Gallipoli he was instrumental in the birth of the Anzac legend which still dominates military history in Australia and New Zealand. Twelve years previously Ashmead-Bartlett arrived in Manchuria to report the Russo-Japanese War. " As we have probably witnessed old-fashioned assaults and close-order formations for the last time, it has been one of my chief objects to place on record the obsolete method of fighting which characterised the Siege."
