LEMON BALM BOTANICAL NAME:  Melissa officinalis   Lemon balm is a small hardy perennial herb.  It grows to a height of 30 - 45 cm.  Balm grows best in a light rich moist soil.  Sow the seeds in seed boxes in early spring, (see our Plastic Seedling Trays) and cover with a thin layer of fine sand or sifted compost.  Keep the soil damp all the time.  When seedlings are 5 cm high transplant to 60 cm apart.  They are water loving plants so water them often.  Your plants ought to last a few years.  Prepare their site by giving it a generous supply of compost or old kraal manure, plus a little dolomitic lime.  Choose a site where it will get some shade during the worst of the heat of the day.  When the plant dies down in winter, cut the stalks 5 cm above the ground level, cover with a layer of compost.  When new growth appears in spring, loosen the soil around the herb and work in dolomitic lime, and general purpose fertiliser. When in flower, it will attract beneficial bees to your garden.    Part used:  Leaves Lemon Balm is used to help the nervous, aid indigestion, insomnia or insect bites.  It makes a lovely refreshing tea. (6-8 fresh leaves, 150 ml boiling water, steep for 10 - 15 minutes.)  Culinary uses, include it in soups as a garnish, fish, eggs and poultry. Puddings and custard, add a sprig of bruised lemon balm to rice pudding and custard while cooking and remove before serving.  Beverages:  put a few bruised leaves in fruit juices or teas as flavouring.  Balm will blend with most other herbs.  This listing is sold by weight.  It has an approx seed count of 8 000 - 10 000 seeds in a packet.     View our other items by clicking on the shield:

BULK LISTING APPROX 750 SEEDS COSMOS SENSATION MIX - COSMOS BIPINNATUS If you're a gardener who thinks annuals aren't worth the effort because they're relatively short-lived, here's a flower that's out of this world. Derived from the Greek word meaning "beautiful," cosmos are as dainty as they are durable and are also one of the easiest plants to grow from seed. Plant direct or in seedling trays (see our Plastic Seedling Trays). Cosmos are adaptable to almost any kind of soil, but they do need moisture to germinate. In dry, hot climates, place a shade cloth over the bed until the seedlings begin to sprout. This happens in roughly five to 10 days after planting. Cosmos bloom continuously until the first frost. With its distinguished forms and vibrant colors, it's no wonder why so many gardeners are over the moon for these flowers in their landscaping, even those with small yards. Cosmos will grow to about 100 cm and they're perfect as part of your landscaping or container gardening. To keep your cosmos in bloom, keep them trimmed. Take a branch with many finished flowers, go a third of the way down the plant and cut. Pruning is an easy way to prompt new growth and tidy up the plant. Afterward, fertilize, water and await a whole new crop. As generous re-seeders, you can either save the seed for next year's garden (remove the dried flower heads to get the seeds) or let nature scatter the seeds for you. View our other items:
