Philenoptera violacea  10 seeds “Apple leaf” Philenoptera violacea is a medium to large-sized, deciduous to semi-deciduous tree up to 15 m tall with a wide-spreading, dense and rounded crown. Main stem is tall, straight and bare but invariably bent and twisted. Bark grey and flaking on older branches and stem, but smooth, light grey and covered with dense hairs on younger branches, exuding a sticky red sap when cut.   Flowers scattered, usually borne in dense terminal sprays mm long at the tips of the branches, varying in colour from white and pink to bluish-pink, mauve or deep violet, and are sweet-scented. Philenoptera violacea is a protected tree in South Africa. Philenoptera violacea is a frost sensitive and drought resistant species. The tree is a good garden subject owing to its graceful habit, pale foliage and beautiful flowers. Although it grows slowly, it is an interesting ornate tree which gives a stunning display when in flower. Propagation is by seed. The seeds must first be soaked in hot water, left overnight and planted the next morning in seedling trays. Cover the seeds lightly with river sand and keep moist. Placing a clear glass over the seedling tray can speed up germination. Seeds usually germinate in four to six days after being sown. The plants should be kept in partial shade for three to five weeks before taking them into full sun and should be planted in scattered clumps in a suitable habitat.

Protea caffra  10 seeds  "Common sugar bush" The common sugar bush is one of three proteas which occur in the Witwatersrand area. It is the most widely distributed protea in South Africa.  It grows as a shrub or small tree with a somewhat rounded crown. Cultivation has so far proven to be difficult. The germination of seed in cultivation is possible, however, transplanting quickly kills the seedlings. So I'd suggest they be left undisturbed in the seedling tray for a few years. More research is required.

COLEUS WIZARD SCARLET – Coleus hybridus The new varieties of Coleus have colours that intensify in sun, but can also thrive in shade. In fact, because of their low light demands, coleus can also be used as house plants. The Wizard Series is an excellent example of the new developments and the best seed raised strain for bedding and containers. The compact plants are durable and hardy to around 10°C. With colourful, medium-size leaves and a base-branching growth, they grow naturally close-to-the-ground and never need pinching to reach a bushy, symmetrical, compact form. The leaves appear in vivid shades that all reach the same size at the same time. “Wizard Scarlet” is of the most popular of the series, it features rich bronze-red, heart-shaped leaves, each with delicate pale green serrated edges. Excellent in full sun, they work well alone making distinctive container plants and combine well with the warmer colours in the border. They are one of the easiest and most satisfying plants to grow, showing their first colours in as little as two weeks and keeping their hues right through the summer. Sow seeds onto a layer of moistened, sterile potting soil in a shallow tray (see our Plastic Seedling Trays Open), do not cover as they need light to germinate. Cover with glass or plastic to retain moisture, until the seeds have germinated. Place in a warm (21°C), bright (not full sun) place. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots. Seedlings should always be held by a leaf, never by the stem. When pricking out coleuses note that larger and stronger plants often have poorer quality foliage. When all danger of frost is past the plants may be set out in the garden. Plant them 30cm apart in rich, moist, well-drained soil.  Avoid drought stress, but do not over water, the lower the growing temperature, the lower the water supply should be. Deciduous, summer growing; prostrate leaves, 15-30cm flower spike, large inflourescence of pink or white flowers. Flowers appear in late summer between early January and late March.  These plants require very high summer temperatures and a completely dry winter period to thrive   Sowing: Place seeds on seedling mix and press down till halfway buried. Do not cover seeds totally. Sow as fresh as possible.  Leave the seedlings in the tray for two seasons, after which they can be planted in the garden.  Water heavily in summer while the plant is growing but allow the soil to dry out between watering.   Locality: Bloemfontein.
