Seedling mix

Top sales list seedling mix

South Africa
What is it? Growing bonsai from seed can be a very rewarding experience. Using a good seedling medium ensures that your seedlings get off to the best start possible.  Our Professional Seedling mix contains a mixture of Perlite, Coir and Peat Moss. Perlite is volcanic glass used to enhance aeration and drainage. It also retains moisture. Peat Moss is said to be a sterile medium and is harvested decayed plant material. Useful in this mix as it retains moisture and is very light. Coir is made from the husk of the coconut. Similar to Peat Moss in most respects however it is not as moisture retentive. How to use it Empty the contents of the bag into a suitable container with many drainage holes. Plant your seeds as directed and then water thoroughly. Place in a warm, sunny position although not in full sun, and keep slightly moist at all times. Damp sheets of newsprint paper are useful as a sort of mulch, covering the surface until the seeds germinate and can then be removed and discarded. Bag contents 30% Perlite 20% Peat Moss 50% Coir

BULK LISTING APPROX 750 SEEDS COSMOS SENSATION MIX - COSMOS BIPINNATUS If you're a gardener who thinks annuals aren't worth the effort because they're relatively short-lived, here's a flower that's out of this world. Derived from the Greek word meaning "beautiful," cosmos are as dainty as they are durable and are also one of the easiest plants to grow from seed. Plant direct or in seedling trays (see our Plastic Seedling Trays). Cosmos are adaptable to almost any kind of soil, but they do need moisture to germinate. In dry, hot climates, place a shade cloth over the bed until the seedlings begin to sprout. This happens in roughly five to 10 days after planting. Cosmos bloom continuously until the first frost. With its distinguished forms and vibrant colors, it's no wonder why so many gardeners are over the moon for these flowers in their landscaping, even those with small yards. Cosmos will grow to about 100 cm and they're perfect as part of your landscaping or container gardening. To keep your cosmos in bloom, keep them trimmed. Take a branch with many finished flowers, go a third of the way down the plant and cut. Pruning is an easy way to prompt new growth and tidy up the plant. Afterward, fertilize, water and await a whole new crop. As generous re-seeders, you can either save the seed for next year's garden (remove the dried flower heads to get the seeds) or let nature scatter the seeds for you. View our other items:

Please select your seed variety from the drop down list above.  As we all by now know, there is no such thing as special bonsai seeds. All seeds used to grow bonsai would develop the same way as the full sized parent plant. There is however much truth in the fact that seed collected from specific parent plants with desirable characteristics are preferred to those which are not. I have identified and selected from our indigenous flora, species most suited and easy to cultivate from seed. Our seed is supplied by leading seed specialists that regularly go on collecting trips and in this way ensure the seed is as fresh as possible. We currently stock: Acacia galipini (Monkey-thorn) Diospyros whyteana (Bladder-nut) Celtis Africana (White Stinkwood) Podocarpus falcatus (Outeniqua Yellowwood) Ficus Natalensis (Natal Fig) Olea europaea subsp. africana (Wild Olive) To ensure success with these seeds please purchase our Professional Seedling Mix and sow your seeds in plastic trays; select from our numerous sizes here.
