It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days Before the Malazan Empire, there was a time that set the stage for all those tales yet to be told...The winter is bitter. Civil war threatens Kurald Galain for the warrior Urusander's army has begun its march on the city of Kharkanas. Led by the ruthless Hunn Raal, it intends to cast aside Mother Dark's consort, Draconus, and set Urusander himself on the throne beside the Living Goddess. Those who would stand in the way of the rebels lie scattered and weakened - leaderless since Anomander went in search of an estranged brother. In his stead, Silchas Ruin resolves to gather the Houseblades of the Highborn families to him, and to resurrect the legendary Hust Legion, but time is not on his side. Far to the west, an unlikely army musters. It seeks an enemy without form, in a place none can find. And yet Hood's call has been heard and the long-abandoned city of Omtose Phellack is now home to a rabble of new arrivals: Dog-Runners from the south, Jheck warriors, and blue-skinned strangers from across the Western Sea have come to offer Hood their swords. From the distant mountains and isolated valleys of the North, Thel Akai arrive to pledge themselves in this seemingly impossible war. Soon, they will set forth with weapons drawn under the banners of the living in pursuit of Death itself. Such events presage chaos, and now magic bleeds into this realm. Unconstrained, mysterious and savage, it begins to run loose and wild and following its scent, seeking the places of wounding and hurt - new and ancient entities gather. In a world becoming rotten with sorcery, can honour truly exist? Features Summary The winter is bitter. The second volume in the New York Times best-selling Immigrants saga. With the publication of The Immigrants, "a most wonderful book," according to Harlan Ellison in the Los Angeles Times, Howard Fast once again proved himself to be one of America's most popular authors. Now, in Second Generation, Fast continues the story of Dan Lavette, the young Italian who lost his parents but launched a stormy and brilliant career as a result of the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. This latest chapter encompasses an even more dramatic sweep of history, from the Depression years to the close of World War II. The central figure is Barbara Lavette, the beautiful daughter of Dan and his aristocratic first wife, Jean. Troubled by the conflicts of her dual inheritance and scornful of her mother's social world, Barbara sets out to build her own life in her own way, a way that leads her to a Europe on the brink of Nazi terror, to love and tragedy, to the farthest reaches of a global war, and ultimately to a deeper understanding of herself...

The Second Creation deals with some of the most important issues confronting us today: genetic engineering and cloning, and the control that science has over the process of life. Written by the noted science author Colin Tudge, the book is based on interviews with Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell, the scientists who cloned Dolly the sheep. Its aim is to explain the story of how and why they came to cloning sheep and the implications for the future, from curing diseases to human cloning. But that's not easy to convey simply, according to Ian Wilmut: The full story is, however, inescapably complicated. The science and technology of cloning, at least by our method, takes us into some of the most esoteric reaches of biology... Their subject is complex and requires careful reading, but the reward is worth the effort. Inevitably, the issue of human cloning is looked at in some detail, and all three of the authors find the idea repugnant and do not believe society will accept it: The pressures for human cloning are powerful; but, although it seems likely that somebody, at some time, will attempt it, we need not assume that it will ever become a common or significant feature of human life. The book contains a comprehensive glossary to explain the scientific terms and abbreviations.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days This book can form the basis of a second course in algebraic geometry. As motivation, it takes concrete questions from enumerative geometry and intersection theory, and provides intuition and technique, so that the student develops the ability to solve geometric problems. The authors explain key ideas, including rational equivalence, Chow rings, Schubert calculus and Chern classes, and readers will appreciate the abundant examples, many provided as exercises with solutions available online. Intersection is concerned with the enumeration of solutions of systems of polynomial equations in several variables. It has been an active area of mathematics since the work of Leibniz. Chasles' nineteenth-century calculation that there are 3264 smooth conic plane curves tangent to five given general conics was an important landmark, and was the inspiration behind the title of this book. Such computations were motivation for Poincare's development of topology, and for many subsequent theories, so that intersection theory is now a central topic of modern mathematics. Features Summary Forming the basis of a second course in algebraic geometry, this book explains key ideas, each illustrated with abundant examples. Winston Churchill, The Second World War Complete in all Six Volumes, First or Revised Editions Title: The Second World War - Six Volumes Publisher: Publisher: Cassell & Co. Ltd., London, 1948-54 Publication Date: 1948-54 Binding: Hardcover Book Condition: Very Good, No Dust Jacket Editions: 1st Edition First edition (hardcover) in six volumes The Gathering Storm (1948) Their Finest Hour (1950) - New edition, revised, published 1950 The Grand Alliance (1950) The Hinge of Fate (1951) Closing the Ring (1952) Triumph and Tragedy (1954) Black cloth covers, spines lettered in gilt, with WINSTON | CHURCHILL, main title, roman numeral I-VI at head and CASSELL at foot. Top page edges of Volumes 3, 5 & 6 are stained dark red. 8vo.  All volumes are variously illustrated with many foldout maps and diagrams. Churchill's complete six volume classic memoirs on WWII, the period from the end of the First World War to July 1945. Churchill labelled the "moral of the work" as follows: "In War: Resolution, In Defeat: Defiance, In Victory: Magnanimity, In Peace: Goodwill".  The titles of the volumes are  The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; and Triumph and Tragedy. Volume I with author's paper slip note tipped-in after his preface. 6 volumes. Some illustrated with plates of facsimiles and maps (many of which are folding); charts and tables. The first volume of Winston Churchills six-volume memoirs as a statesman and leader during World War II, The Gathering Storm begins with his thoughts on World War I - and how its ending laid the foundations for the next global conflict. The second volume of Winston Churchills six-volume autobiographical account of World War II, Their Finest Hour picks up where The Gathering Storm left off - with the fall of France to Hitlers forces and Britains stand as the lone defender against the Nazi war machine. In this third volume of a six-volume series, Their Finest Hour, Winston Churchill draws upon thousands of personal memoranda, war correspondence, and internal government memos to describe the full entry of the US into World War II - adding considerable strength to British military operations and morale. At the onset of the fourth volume of Churchills eyewitness account of World War II,  The Grand Alliance, prospects are bleak for the Allies. The Japanese have captured Singapore and Burma in a series of bold offensives; meanwhile, aggressive U-boat attacks in the Atlantic were preventing American, British, and Dutch shipping vessels from supplying the war effort. Rommel was turning the tide toward Axis forces in North Africa. Meanwhile, Hitler was pushing inexorably toward Stalingrad. Churchill faced challenges in the field--and considerable criticism at home. The fifth in Winston Churchills six-volume account of World War II,  Closing the Ring, picks up at the dawn of a more optimistic time for the Allied forces. After considerable struggle, the balance has finally shifted toward the Allies - and in this volume Churchill documents the drive toward victory. In the final volume of the six-volume series The Second World War, titled  Triumph and Tragedy, the tide of war has turned in the Allies favor and Japan's surrender is imminent. Even so, the Allies find themselves powerless to halt the advance of Russia and lay the groundwork for lasting peace.  Churchill himself is seeing his time of leadership come to a close. All of Churchill’s revisions and “overtake corrections” were scrupulously entered by Cassell which, combined with two- and three-color textual maps and many finely printed folding maps, makes this English Edition aesthetically pleasing.  Condition:  The books are in very good condition, tightly bound, with foxing throughout. Specific photos available on request.
