Rommel's Afrika Korps and the Desert Rats face each other at the gateway to Egypt.  While both sides build up their strength, small bands of Monty's Long Range Desert Group cross the trackless desert.  Their job: to count the men and supplies on the coast road, paving the way for the Special Air Services to attack airfields and ammunition dumps. After a devastating attack on an airfield, Sgt Harris and his men of the Fighting Four are lost.  They have a wounded officer, a truck, little water and practically no food.  Between them and base lie hundreds of miles of sun-blistered desert.  To be captured means death, for Hitler has ordered men like the Fighting Four to be shot as spies. The Siege of Tobruk lasted longer than the Siege of Mafeking. This fly-blown, dust-ridden Lybian port was the only harbour between Bengazi and Alexandria and became crucial as the only stumbling-block preventing Rommel's sweep forward to the Nile. The centre of a shuttlecock war Tobruk was captured by Wavell in 1940, became a beleaguered fortress for 242 days until its garrison was relieved in November 1941 by Auchinleck. Churchill and his War Cabinet in Whitehall with a fine sense of unreality ordered that " Tobruk must be held to the death." It was. The Australians under Major General Morshead fought like tigers, but a year later another garrison of 30,000 men in Tobruk commanded by Major General Klopper surrendered to Rommel in twenty-four hours. Why? There were rumours of high-ranking officers on Klopper's staff surrendering to Rommel blind drunk, of native African troops pillaging the rum stores and being shot out of hand by their captors, and of Company Commanders deserting their men... a Court of Enquiry was held in Cairo but its findings remain secret.   The Longest Siege - Tobruk, The Battle that saved North Africa by Robert Lyman   Beginning on 10th April 1941, and lasting for 240 days, the siege of Tobruk is a mesmerising tale of human endurance and heroism. It is an epic story of extraordinary resilience as the Libyan port's 24,000 defenders met increasingly desperate attempts by Rommel's Panzer divisions to break through the hurriedly thrown-up defences. It was a battle of bayonets and grenades against tanks, of David versus Goliath. The eventual allied victory came against overwhelming odds, plus the morale sapping knowledge that the defenders were surrounded on one side by the sea, and on the other by Hitler's men and machines (who, only the year before, had brought Western Europe to its knees). Tobruk was defended in the main by the Australian 9th Division, followed by the British 70th Infantry Division who then linked up with the advancing 8th Army. The Royal Navy also played an important role in Tobruk's defence. By December 1941 Rommel had been beaten and forced to withdraw his forces from Cyrenaica. The history of this Regiment dates back to the Transvaal Cycle Corps, which was formed in Johannesburg on 1 October 1905 from the Bicycle Section of the Transvaal Scottish Regiment. A small section of this unit subsequently took part in the suppression of the Bambata Rebellion in Zululand. After its return from this conflict the unit recognised the possibilities of mechanisation and members of the Regiment manufactured three armoured cars, creating a motorised fighting unit. This led to the renaming of the unit in 1909 to the Transvaal Cycle and Motor Corps. On 1 July 1913 the Regiment was renamed the 11th Infantry (Rand Light Infantry) and transferred to the Active Citizen Force of the Union Defence Force. Simultaneously, the unit was converted to a normal infantry regiment. The Regiment's Pretoria detachment was transferred to the 12th Infantry (Pretoria Regiment). World War One. During World War I the Regiment took part in the South-West Africa, suffering light casualties – only two dead and eleven wounded. In 1932 the Regiment was renamed the Rand Light Infantry. The Siege started on 11 April 1941, when; Tobruk was attacked by an Italian-German force under Lieutenant General Rommel and continued forj 240 days.The Siege was only a couple of months old when the renegade Lord Haw Haw, broadcasting from Berlin, said the Allies were "caught like rats in a trap". The Allied soldiers accepted the title with alacrity and became the renowned 'Rats of Tobruk'. The blockade continued for eight months, during which time the men endured intense bombing raids, entombed in their desert fortress.However, the Allies held their ground and defied the seemingly unstoppable blitzkrieg war of the Germans.In addition, the Royal Navy and Allied artillery played a crucial role in Tobruk's defence in providing gunfire support, military supplies, fresh troops, and aid in the evacuation of the wounded.Maintaining control of Tobruk was crucial to the Allied war effort and marked a turning point in the Second World War.
