Desert Raiders (SAS Operation) - Shaun Clarke - 2016 - Paperback as new. In the North African desert in 1941 the war is being won by the brilliant German commander General Rommel, and the British are in retreat on all fronts. A young British army lieutenant, David Stirling, believes that the only way to reverse this situation is to attack the enemy behind their own lines, using small groups of men who can insert by land, sea or air as required. The first of these men are dropped by parachute to attack enemy airfields in the Gazala area, but the raid is a disaster, with many lives lost. The following year, the survivors of that operation, now working hand in hand with the Long Range Desert Group, mount a series of spectacular raids in heavily armed jeeps against airfields in the Benghazi region, destroying nearly a hundred enemy aircraft, leaving the German army reeling, and reversing the course of the war. Desert Raiders is the colourful story of the birth of the SAS, the most renowned regiment in the history of the British Army – forged with fire and steel in the vast, sun-scorched plains of the North African desert, pitting themselves against the might of the formerly invincible German army, and gaining a reputation that will make them a legend in their own time.

After bitter debate, South Africa, a dominion of the British Empire at the time, declared war on Germany five days after the invasion of Poland in September 1939. Thrust by the British into the campaign against Erwin Rommels German Afrika Korps in North Africa, the South Africans fought a see-saw war of defeats followed by successes, culminating in the Battle of El Alamein, where South African soldiers made a significant contribution to halting the Desert Foxs advance into Egypt. This is the story of an army committed somewhat reluctantly to a war it didnt fully support, ill-prepared for the battles it was tasked with fighting, and sent into action on the orders of its senior alliance partner. At its heart, however, this is the story of men at war. Paperback, 352 pages

Rommel's Afrika Korps and the Desert Rats face each other at the gateway to Egypt.  While both sides build up their strength, small bands of Monty's Long Range Desert Group cross the trackless desert.  Their job: to count the men and supplies on the coast road, paving the way for the Special Air Services to attack airfields and ammunition dumps. After a devastating attack on an airfield, Sgt Harris and his men of the Fighting Four are lost.  They have a wounded officer, a truck, little water and practically no food.  Between them and base lie hundreds of miles of sun-blistered desert.  To be captured means death, for Hitler has ordered men like the Fighting Four to be shot as spies. Hard cover, fair condition.  188 pages.

Australia 1 dollar Famous Battles Tobruk 1941 Silver Coloured Proof Coin 2011 Edition Technical Specs Presentation Country:   Australia Metal Purity:    ¿Silver 0.999 Box:   Yes Year of Issue:   2011 Weight:   1 Oz CoA:   Yes Face Value:   1 dollar Dimensions:   40.60     Quality:   Proof     Mintage:   5000   New coin with capsule, CoA and box The Siege of Tobruk was a lengthy confrontation between Axis and Allied forces in North Africa during the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War. The Siege started on 11 April 1941, when; Tobruk was attacked by an Italian-German force under Lieutenant General Rommel and continued forj 240 days. The Siege was only a couple of months old when the renegade Lord Haw Haw, broadcasting from Berlin, said the Allies were "caught like rats in a trap". The Allied soldiers accepted the title with alacrity and became the renowned 'Rats of Tobruk'. The blockade continued for eight months, during which time the men endured intense bombing raids, entombed in their desert fortress. However, the Allies held their ground and defied the seemingly unstoppable blitzkrieg war of the Germans. In addition, the Royal Navy and Allied artillery played a crucial role in Tobruk's defence in providing gunfire support, military supplies, fresh troops, and aid in the evacuation of the wounded.Maintaining control of Tobruk was crucial to the Allied war effort and marked a turning point in the Second World War. The Siege of Tobruk was finally lifted in December 1941.There were those that could not answer those longed-for evacuation orders. Casualties from all sides of the conflict lie in windswept cemeteries around Tobruk. ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

HarperCollins Publishers. Hardback. Book Condition: Very good, 2009, 1st edition. 388 pp. Alamein, Iain Gale, The superb novelist of men at war moves into the twentieth century and World War Two, telling the story of the eleven days in the sands of North Africa that would change history forever. There are some battles that change the course of history: Alamein is one of those. In October 1942, Britain and its allies were in real difficulties: Germany and its Axis partners seemed to be triumphant everywhere - in Europe, in Russia, in the Atlantic and were now poised to take the Suez Canal. It was in North Africa that the stand was made, that the tide of World War Two began to turn. It was a battle of strong characters: the famous battle commander Rommel and the relatively untested new British commander, Montgomery, leading men who fought through an extraordinary eleven day battle, in an unforgiving terrain, amid the swirling sandstorms and the desert winds. Iain Gale, author of the outstanding historical novel Four Days in June on the battle of Waterloo, tells the dramatic story through seven characters, almost all based on real people. Drawn from both sides of the conflict, they include a major from a Scottish brigade, the young lieutenant in the thick of the tank battle, the Australian sergeant with the infantry, the tank commander of the Panzer Division and the charismatic Italian commander of a parachute battalion. Through them and others we see the flow of battle, the strategies, the individual actions and skirmishes, the fear, the determination, the extraordinary courage on both sides.

As new condition. "James Ambrose Brown's journal of the life of a South African infantryman in the British North African 8th Army, almost exactly half a century ago, gives a day-to-day account of the campaign in the Western Desert against the redoubtable Rommel's Afrika Korps.. Brown's hour-to-hour depiction of the great battle [of El Alamein] that at last sent the enemy reeling back across North Africa remains a classic. A leading American journal, The Saturday Evening Post, called it 'The greatest worm's eye view of battle to come out of the war so far'. To bring today's reader into the picture, James Ambrose Brown has provided a preamble that sets out the political and military events which led up to World War II and the two years of lost North African battles that almost gave total victory to Germany and Italy. Splendid maps by Dr Richard Wood vividly illustrate the tactical situations described in the diary; they also fill in the gaps in large-scale operations. Lavish use of photographs taken by official war photographers illustrate the text. Also reproduced are sketches done by official war artists who were there. Retreat to Victory is a moving and timeless record of despair and hope; and the ultimate devastation that is left in the path of war."
