The Arpa Farmhouse has four bedrooms and two bathrooms with one bath and two showers; the warm water is supplied by a donkey boiler. There is no electricity and the lights inside are generated from heavy duty batteries. The units have a small gas fridge and a gas stove and plenty of wood for campfires, but bring charcoal for braais. You will need to bring your own bedding and it is always cooler at night and bitterly cold in winter. There is a Jetmaster fireplace and a farm stove for cold winter nights. There is a big lapa next to the dam with a coal stove; the dam is 50 m from the farmhouse. The dam is a great stop for fishing as there is plenty of bass and a great three kilometre hike along the river or a hike along the koppie for the best view of the surrounding land and hills. Bring your binoculars as there are plenty of birdwatching opportunities. Firewood is free for boma fires; Sylvester makes fires and wash the dishes. The entire farm can be booked out and is ideal for birthday parties or weddings at a fixed rate. Please enquire about the rate. Catering can be supplied (spitbraai,potjie and breakfast) and please note you need to bring your own bedding. Special rates for groups for more than nine adults. If your group is larger than five people no other group will be allowed on the farm. There are various activities on the farm such as fishing for bass and carp, rowing on the Arpa dam in two arc boats, riding on tubes on the river, sleeping on the Helpmekaar koppie in tents and experiencing the Free State in all its glory, and swimming in the dam, river or in the Arpa cement dam Jacuzzi. You can also enjoy a river picnic under the shade of large poplar trees with the sound of eagles nesting in the trees. Hike on the farm or walk to the mountains and hollow caves, or ride your mountain bike on a 27 km dirt road or your road bike to Clarens which is 26 km from Arpa. Guests can visit Lesotho as the border is only 12 km from Arpa and make a boma fire and "kuier" into the small hours of the night, no need to worry about neighbours. There is a generator on Arpa for light and to charge cellphones. The 700-litre donkey makes hot water for everybody and you can drink water out of Arpa's fountain.
