Pines are a classic bonsai species in Japan and the world over, they are not however, easy trees to care for and style without experience. Pines have their own growth patterns that differ greatly from deciduous and common coniferous species; these growth patterns need to be understood before successful styling and pruning can be carried out. As can be seen in the accompanying pictures; pines are not only used for bonsai in Japan, they are also very often seen cloud-pruned in Japanese gardens. Pinus mugo var. pumilio  Bonsai Seeds The Mugo pine, Pinus mugo var. pumilio or Dwarf mugo pine is an excellent bonsai subject. This tree occurs throughout the Midwest, West and ranging to Canada and Alaska. In nature it is a medium-sized tree that can reach a height of 2-3 feet tall and spread over 5-6 feet. It is a favorite of bonsai hobbyists because of its rapidly thickening and naturally twisted trunk and branches. The bark is thin, ash-grey-brown to blackish-grey, splitting in angular scaly plates on old stems. The branching is very compact, making it easy to maintain. Pinus mugo var. pumilio is small and has branches that are more erect than Pinus mugo mughus. Short-needled tree with open, broad, irregular crown of long spreading branches. This evergreen little dwarf conifer has branching, upright stems evenly covered in 1 1/2 - 3" long needles, 2 in bundle; slightly flattened and twisted; of a deep, dark true green.   Cupressus sempervirens, commonly known as the Mediterranean Cypress or Pencil pine, is a species of cypress native to the eastern Mediterranean region, in northeast Libya, southeast Greece), southern Turkey, Cyprus, western Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. It is a medium-sized evergreen tree to 35 m in height, with a conic crown with level branches and variably pendulous branchlets. It is very long-lived, with some trees reported to be over 1,000 years old. The foliage grows in dense sprays, dark green in colour. The leaves are scale-like, 2-5 mm long, and produced on rounded shoots. The seed cones are ovoid or oblong, 25-40 mm long, with 10-14 scales, green at first, maturing to a golden brown. The male cones are 3-5 mm long. Mediterranean Cypress has been widely cultivated as an ornamental tree for millennia away from its native range, mainly throughout the central and western Mediterranean region, and in other areas with similar hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Pencil pines are hardy and will grow in all but the most severe climatic zones of Australia. They are also more tolerant of dry conditions than most other cypresses. It makes an excellent bonsai subject.
