Here we have on auction a Rhodesian bushwar era original period item - a "RNG" stamped brass issue compass in great condition. Oh the stories and places that htis compass has likely been too - a real find from back in the day! The item is in reasonably good shape, but does has some wear-and-tear! The main fuid housing is intact - no leaks fo fluid, there appears to be nO bubble. Therefore as a compass this item is still usable! There is however s ascrew missin on the top cover for one of the guards over the see-through cover/ flap, but besides that it is good-to-go and would make an excellent piece for display and/ or reenactment! The stamped "RNG" refers to the Rhodesia and Nayassaland Governement which proceeded the UDI of Rhodesia and these compasses would have been absorbed as is into the armed forces of Rhodesia post-UDI. Please see the photos for further confirmation of the item's exact condition and further details of the piece. Please note that the background used for the photos is not included in this auction. Postage quotes supplied to the winning bidder and dependent on the persons location and preferred shipping/ postage method. Please note that due to work commitments I can likely only post or dispatch items on either Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings at the moment. Paypal gladly accepted for foreign bidders! Happy bidding!!!

This book is the third in a trilogy of books about aspects of flying training in the SAAF. The earlier books are FACTA NOSTRA VIVENT and GOING AROUND AGAIN by the same author. Langebaanweg has a long and important history as a SAAF air base. This book with its many pages of colour photographs is a modest attempt to record a small piece of history. It is not an official record but a scrapbook of memories. Chapters include: A short history of Langebaanweg Air Force Base, flying the Spitfire, the Vampire and the Impala MB 326M. Other  contributors include  memories  of retired  AFB Langebaanweg Commanding Officers, the  secret training  of Rhodesian pilots and over 100interesting, amusing and personal stories and reminiscences from people who remember  times and events from the post-war Spitfire days in the nineteen fifties  through  to the  departure  of  the  Impalas  in  1993. There are  tables  of accidents  (courtesy  historian  Steve Mclean) and  a full  history  of  the  SAAF Vampire (courtesy Geoff Timms and The De Havilland Society). A detailed paper (in Afrikaans by Sophia de Preez also details the early base history (courtesy Military Society). COMPILED BY: ANDREW EMBLETON First Published in June 2017, hardcover, 342 pages with colour photos.

The crashes of Air Rhodesia Flight RH825 and Air Rhodesia Flight RH827 were two of the deadliest aviation incidents in the history of Zimbabweand they werent accidents. In this in-depth exploration of a little-known piece of southern African history, Ian Pringle tells a true story of terrorism, sabotage, and survival. Pringle, who lived in Rhodesia at the time of the crashes, collected interviews from survivors, witnesses, pilots, ground staff, accident investigators, family members, and experts. These testimonies reveal stories of heroism and courage in the wake of a major tragedy. Air Rhodesia Flight RH825 was the first airliner ever to be shot down by Russian surface-to-air guided missile. The surviving passengers tell the story of the crash and its horrific aftermath. Five months later, Air Rhodesia Flight RH827 was downed in the same way. This time, there were no survivors. In addition to presenting vivid first-person testimonies, Pringle examines how the attacksand the ensuing collective rage of the Rhodesian people at those responsiblecontributed to the instability of the country. He shows how these tragedies indirectly led to the rise of Robert Mugabe and laid the groundwork for a very different future for the African nation. Paperback, 240 pages.
