Excerpt from Report on Strike of Textile Workers in Lawrence, Mass;, In 1912 The textile strike in Lawrence and the conditions which followed were not primarily due to any condition peculiar to Lawrence. The general conditions of the industry in Lawrence are more or less typical of the textile industry in all of the large distinctly textile towns, and the strike in Lawrence and the conditions attending it might just as easily have occurred in any other of these towns. In the face of growing evidence of corruption and of the weakening of state and democratic institutions, it provided, for the first time, a powerful analysis of events that helped galvanise resistance within the Tripartite Alliance and across civil society. Working often secretly, the authors consolidated, for the first time, large amounts of evidence from a variety of sources. They showed that the Jacob Zuma administration was not simply a criminal network but part of an audacious political project to break the hold of whites and white business on the economy and to create a new class of black industrialists. State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) such as Eskom and Transnet were central to these plans. The report introduced a whole new language to discuss state capture, showing how SOEs were `repurposed', how political power was shifting away from constitutional bodies to `kitchen cabinets', and how a `shadow state' at odds with the country's constitutional framework was being built. Shadow State is an updated version of the original, explosive report that changed South Africa's recent history. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days Advocate Thuli Madonsela has achieved in her seven years as Public Protector what few accomplish in a lifetime; her legacy and contribution cannot be over-stated. In her final days in office she compiled the explosive State Capture report and, before that, the report on President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla residence. Praised and vilified in equal measures, Madonsela has frequently found herself at centre stage in the increasingly fractious South African political scene. Yet, despite the intense media scrutiny, Madonsela remains something of an enigma. Who is this soft-spoken woman who stood up to state corruption? Where did she develop her views and resolve? This book attempts to answer these questions, and others, by exploring many aspects of Madonsela's life: her childhood years and family, her involvement in student politics, her contribution to the constitution, her life in law. Madonsela once described her role as Public Protector as being akin to that of the Venda traditional spiritual female leader, the Makhadzi, who whispers truth to the ruler. When the sounds of the exchanges between the ruler and the Makhadzi grow loud, Madonsela said, that is when the whispering has failed. No Longer Whispering to Power is about Thuli Madonsela's tenure as Public Protector, during which the whisper grew into a cry. It is the story of the South African people's attempt to hold power to account through the Office of the Public Protector. More significantly, this important book stands as a record of the crucial work Madonsela has done, always acting without fear or favour. "SOUTH AFRICAN RESERVE BANK COLLECTION" 2007, CONTRIBUTIONS BY DR. RORY BESTER, JODI BRENNER & OTHERS The art collection of the Reserve Bank is regarded as one of the premier corporate collections in the country, with its outstanding strength being landscape art produced between 1900 and 1970. The collection contains a number of historically important works and works by contemporary artists. The collection has its origins in artworks that were accumulated and intended for display in hotels attached to the railway stations in Cape Town and Pretoria. When the state abandoned these hotel plans, the 146 artworks were put up for sale at two much-anticipated auctions in 1954 and 1955.   In the ensuing years the Bank’s eclectic collection has grown to over 700 artworks displayed at the Bank's Head Office, the SARB College, and its branches in Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, East London, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria North.   In 1991 the Bank produced the first art book of the collection’s holdings.  PLEASE NOTE THIS IS THE 2007 EDITION HARDCOVER IN BRANDNEW CONDITION, COMPLETE DUSTJACKET IN FINE UNREAD CONDITION

(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) In October 1899, the 24-year-old Winston Churchill sailed for South Africa as war correspondent for the Morning Post to report on the Boer War. This book follows Churchill's footsteps across South Africa and gives his impressions of the places he visited, the landscapes he saw, the people he encountered and the events he was involved in. Churchill's South Africa covers the future statesman's travels across the Great Karoo and through the green hills of Natal, his capture by the Boers, his escape to Delagoa Bay and his triumphant return to the Natal front as an officer in the SA Light Horse. It recreates the drama of the Battle of Spioen Kop and the Relief of Ladysmith, and describes Churchill's experiences during the British advance through the Free State and the Transvaal, before returning to England as a Boer War hero. Enlivened with photographs and with quotations from Churchill's pen, this beautifully produced volume documents the travels of a key historical figure in South Africa at a critical time in its history. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Though African Americans have served as foreign reporters for almost two centuries, their work remains virtually unstudied. In this seminal volume, Jinx Coleman Broussard traces the history of black participation in international newsgathering. Beginning in the mid-1800s with Frederick Douglass and Mary Ann Shadd Cary the first black woman to edit a North American newspaper African American Foreign Correspondents highlights the remarkable individuals and publications that brought an often-overlooked black perspective to world reporting. Broussard focuses on correspondents from 1840 to modern day, including reporters such as William Worthy Jr., who helped transform the role of modern foreign correspondence by gaining the right for journalists to report from anywhere in the world unimpeded; Leon Dash, a professor of journalism and African American studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who reported from Africa for the Washington Post in the 1970s and 1980s; and Howard French, a professor in Columbia University s journalism school and a globetrotting foreign correspondent. African American Foreign Correspondents provides insight into how and why African Americans reported the experiences of blacks worldwide. In many ways, black correspondents upheld a tradition of filing objective stories on world events, yet some African American journalists in the mainstream media, like their predecessors in the black press, had a different mission and perspective. They adhered primarily to a civil rights agenda, grounded in advocacy, protest, and pride. Accordingly, some of these correspondents not all of them professional journalists worked to spur social reform in the United States and force policy changes that would eliminate oppression globally. Giving visibility and voice to the marginalized, correspondents championed an image of people of color that combatted the negative and racially construed stereotypes common in the American media. By examining how and why blacks reported information and perspectives from abroad, African American Foreign Correspondents contributes to a broader conversation about navigating racial, societal, and global problems, some of which we continue to contend with today.
