The Relatively Public Life of Jules Browde I sat there divided. Though my grandfather was visibly shaken by the force of this memory, and I knew I was seeing him more vulnerable than I had ever seen him, I felt a bubbly thrill because this was such good stuff, and I remember turning my eyes away from his distressed face to make sure the wheels of the dictaphone were still turning. When Daniel is tasked with writing the biography of his grandfather, Jules Browde - one of South Africa's most celebrated advocates - he sharpens his pencil and gets to work. But the task that at first seems so simple comes to overwhelm him. As the book begins to recede - month after month, year after year - he must face the possibility of disappointing his grandfather, whose legacy now rests uncomfortably in his hands. The troubled progress of Daniel's book stands in sharp contrast to the clear-edged tales his grandfather tells him. Spanning almost a century, these gripping stories compellingly conjure other worlds: the streets of 1920s Yeoville, the battlefields of the Second World War, the courtrooms of apartheid South Africa. The Relatively Public Life of Jules Browde turns the conventions of a biography inside out. It is more than the portrait of an unusual South African life, it is the moving tale of a complex and tender relationship between grandfather and grandson, and an exploration of how we are made and unmade in the stories we tell about our lives. Author Daniel Browde ISBN 9781868427208 Format Paperback Pages 310p.

Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles very good, price clipped. Browning of pages Map (illustrator). Reprint. 21cm By 14cm. Richard Byrd is renowned for his polar explorations, but his experiences as sole occupant of a Antarctic weather station during the winter of 1934 is relatively little known. It is, in fact, a book he was reluctant to write, because he did not want to relive the dangers, the isolation, the near death from illness and cold of the five months at the station, 250 miles from his companions at Little America. This is a compelling story of determination, self-sufficiency, loneliness, struggle to survive and the resilience of the inner-self. First published in 1938, this 1958 edition with foreword by Sir John Hunt. Photo's available on request.

An Eloquent Picture Gallery: The South African Portrait Photographs of Gustav Theodor Fritsch, 1863-1865 - Keith Hamilton Dietrich, Andrew Bank (2008)   Bringing to life a unique cultural gallery of both known and unknown figures of the early 1860s with an astonishing veracity, this remarkable photographic collection is a visual documentation of South Africas people. Aesthetically stunning and of surprising technical quality for the period taken, this intriguing collage represents the life work of 25-year-old German doctor and anthropologist Gustav Fritsch, who utilized the relatively new photographic medium to complement his scientific expedition to the South African landscape. Reflecting how the native tribes remained untouched by the social and industrial revolution around them, and accompanied by essays that set in context Fritschs outlook on racial discovery and theory, this invaluable photographic insight is an artistic and historically significant addition to South Africas cultural heritage.   Lichens of Antarctica and South Georgia: A Guide to their Identification and Ecology (Hardback) D.O. Ovstedal, R.I. Lewis-Smith   CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2001. First Edition. Hardback. Pictorial Boards, no dust jacket. Book Condition: Very Good, ex high school library, with usual stamps, but appears never read.  231 x 152 mm. 411 pp.   Antarctica's severe climate and restricted area of ice-free habitats limit the biodiversity and biota of its terrestrial ecosystems. Throughout much of this wilderness, lichens are the predominant visible life form, yet relatively few descriptive accounts of Antarctic lichens have been published. Research on these enigmatic organisms is increasing rapidly and there is a growing need for a comprehensive guide to the identification of Antarctic lichen-forming fungi. This volume provides the first modern detailed compilation of their taxonomy, ecology, distribution and relevant published literature. As such, it represents a major contribution to global lichen taxonomy and biogeography. The systematic accounts provide sufficient descriptive information to allow specialists to identify taxa to species level, and are structured so that even non-specialists can use them to identify specimens to at least the generic level. Here Schecter illuminates the link between poverty and blindness--40 million people suffer from preventable blindness that arises from Vitamin A deficiency, unsanitary conditions, minimal health care, and other issues. Presented are touching and heartfelt images of these persons in their habitats. But this isn't merely a journey into the world's less fortunate regions--a percentage of each sale of A Journey in Sight will be donated to Orbis, an organization that provides free or inexpensive eye treatment to people who needlessly suffer from preventable blindness. Dismissal does not consist only of negative connotations — in fact dismissal is not a "punishment" but a normal operational activity essential to the achievement of business objectives. What is common cause, however, is that the dismissal of employees always constitutes a high-risk area for employers, and sloppy management and incorrect dismissal procedures almost always lead to costly legal proceedings, reinstatements and settlements. What adds insult to injury is that, in most cases, the employer has had more than enough reason to dismiss under the circumstances. This book explains that the "perfect dismissal" is not normally of a highly technical and complex nature and that the KISS principle applies to most dismissals, i.e. "keep it simple and straightforward". The book also dispels some of the myths surrounding dismissal and will show you that it is relatively easy to comply with the requirements of law in order to ensure the fairness of a dismissal. But in JapanEasy, Tim Anderson reveals that many Japanese recipes require no specialist ingredients at all, and can in fact be whipped up with products found at your local supermarket. In fact, there are only seven essential ingredients required for the whole book: soy sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, dashi, sake, miso and rice. You don't need any special equipment, either. No sushi mat? No problem -- use just cling film and a tea towel! JapanEasy is designed to be an introduction to the world of Japanese cooking via some of its most accessible (but authentic) dishes. The recipes here do not 'cheat' in any way; there are no inadequate substitutions for obscure ingredients: this is the real deal. Tim starts with some basic sauces and marinades that any will easily 'Japanify' any meal, then moves onto favourites such as gyoza, sushi, yakiroti, ramen and tempura, and introduces readers to new dishes they will love. Try your hand at a range of croquettas, sukiyaki and a Japanese 'carbonara' that will change your life. Recipes are clearly explained and rated according to difficulty, making them easy to follow and even easier to get right. If you are looking for fun, simple, relatively quick yet delicious Japanese dishes that you can actually make on a regular basis - the search stops here. Profiling Serial Killers - And Other Crimes in South Africa - Micki Pistorius - 2005 - Penguin - Paperback in very good, clean and tight condition. The science of profiling is relatively new, having first been tried in the United States in the 1940s. However, it took about another twenty years of development and refinement before it became recognised as an investigative tool in the apprehension of criminals. Profiling can be described as an 'educated attempt to provide investigative agencies with specific information about the type of individual who could have committed a particular crime'. Nowadays it is utilised with other sound investigative techniques. Profiling serial killers and other crimes in South Africa contains a introduction to the subject, followed by chapters (with case studies) on serial killers, pyromaniacs, rapists, child molesters, stalkers, and white collar crime and intelligence profiling.

Many writers have understood colonial rule as either "direct" (French) or "indirect" (British), with a third variant-apartheid-as exceptional. This benign terminology, Mamdani shows, masks the fact that these were actually variants of a despotism. While direct rule denied rights to subjects on racial grounds, indirect rule incorporated them into a "customary" mode of rule, with state-appointed Native Authorities defining custom. By tapping authoritarian possibilities in culture, and by giving culture an authoritarian bent, indirect rule (decentralized despotism) set the pace for Africa; the French followed suit by changing from direct to indirect administration, while apartheid emerged relatively later. Apartheid, Mamdani shows, was actually the generic form of the colonial state in Africa. Through case studies of rural (Uganda) and urban (South Africa) resistance movements, we learn how these institutional features fragment resistance and how states tend to play off reform in one sector against repression in the other. Reforming a power that institutionally enforces tension between town and country, and between ethnicities, is the key challenge for anyone interested in democratic reform in Africa.  The Somme Chronicles - South Africans on the Western Front - Chris Schoeman - 2014 - Zebra - Paperback in good, clean and tight condition. This is the story of South African soldiers during the 1916 Somme offensive, which took place between the Allied forces and the Germans along the Somme River in France and was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the First World War, resulting in over a million deaths in six months. In July 1916, the men of the 1st South African Infantry Brigade were involved in recapturing the village of Lingueval and clearing Delville Wood of enemy soldiers, but they suffered extreme casualties. After six days of fighting, of the Brigade's 3433 soldiers, only 750 were left standing. The rest were dead or wounded. This book tells the stories of the men of the Brigade via their letters, diaries, and interviews that the author conducted with survivors many years ago. Not much has been written about South Africans during World War I. Surprisingly, it is a relatively untapped period of military history. This fascinating new book covers the iconic battle of Delville Wood, the most famous event involving South Africans during the war.

The Awakening is a strikingly modern, evocative story of self-discovery and female emancipation, set in the sensuous environment of Southern Louisiana, where the young Edna Pontellier reclaims her own individuality, refusing to be defined by her roles of wife and mother. Chopin's stories are brilliantly observed, compassionate and often humorous, alert to the foibles, weaknesses and small triumphs of her characters. Overshadowed by the relatively recent fame of The Awakening, they contain some of the best work of this remarkably original author.
