The story goes inside the dressing-room, takes in their unscheduled, week-long, bonding trek to Siberia and back for a European Challenge Cup game, and all the key twists and turns along the way. It brings us the characters in this Band of Brothers, from the locals such as captain John Muldoon from Portumna to their iconic fans' favourite Bundee Aki - who like their talismanic coach Pat Lam is a Kiwi from Auckland of Samoan descent - and their Nigerian-born and Dublin-raised match-winner Niyi Adeolokun. The story takes in the province's troubled professional history, which had them on the brink of extinction as a professional entity in 2003 and led to Connacht and their supporters marching to the IRFU offices in a successful bid to keep them afloat. It covers their dethroning of the champions Glasgow in the Sportsground in Galway and their stunning performance in the final against Leinster in Edinburgh. In more than two decades of professional rugby, there has been no story quite like it. Trained at Alabama's Tuskegee Institute, they overcame racial bias during World War II as the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Corps. The pilots of the 332nd made their reputation escorting B-17s and B-24s on long bombing runs over Central Europe. Nicknamed Red Tails for the crimson tips of their P-51 Mustang fighters, the airmen were also known as the Red-Tailed Angels by their admiring bomber crews. Based on extensive interviews with members of the Tuskegee Airmen, this inspiring book offers insights into the prejudices the Red Tails had to overcome and recaptures the drama of wartime service. As veteran Charles McGee noted, The story of the Tuskegee Airmen isn't a black story, it's an American history story, and the youth of America need to know about it. The primary source for the George Lucas film, Red Tails, this volume includes sixteen pages of historic black-and-white photographs and was praised by Library Journal as an important addition to any African-American history and/or military studies collection. 2014. Soft cover. 34 pages. Very good condition; like new.  Under 1kg. A thought-provoking Cape Town exhibition, Design & Making [the story of food], traces the evolution of craft and design through food - in particular, the vessels used for its preservation, storage, packaging and distribution. The exhibition, at the Castle of Good Hope from 12 May-12 October 2014, is a collaboration between the Cape Craft & Design Institute (CCDI) and Iziko Museums of South Africa’s Social History Collections Department. It is an official Cape Town World Design Capital 2014 project (#461). Installations reveal how the story of food preservation, storage and packaging over time is vast and complex. From using found objects such as ostrich eggs and gourds, and objects made from clay, wood, grass and other materials, we now store food in freezers, plastic, cardboard, glass and vacuum-packaging. And while we still have the same food types such as grains and cereals, in our current era there is a proliferation of ‘created’ foodstuffs such as energy drinks and same-size fruit and vegetables. The exhibition story is told through installations and objects: a large group of historic African, European and Asian objects sourced from Iziko’s Collections stands alongside 30 contemporary objects created by designer-makers from the Western Cape. There are also examples of modern packaging. The curators are independent consultants Rayda Becker and June Hosford, Esther Esmyol and Wieke van Delen (Iziko Museums), Vikki du Preez (Cape Peninsula University of Technology); it was project managed by Marjorie Naidoo (CCDI) and exhibition designer Aidan Bennetts.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days On 12 June 1922 King George V received at Windsor Castle representatives of the six disbanded Irish regiments. While five had long and distinguished service records, the South Irish Horse (SIH) had only been raised in 1902, as a result of the second Boer War, but too late to take part. On the outbreak of The Great War a single squadron of the SIH was sent to Flanders which was involved in the retreat from Mons and the Marne and the early battles of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle. The remainder of the Regiment followed and over the next four years, won ten battle honours including Loos 1915, Somme 1916 and 1918, Albert, St Quentin, Courtrai and finally France and Flanders 1915-1918. Losses were severe and there were many acts of gallantry. This book, while not an official history, fills a void by describing the achievements of this unique and short-lives regiment and the colourful characters who served in it. Certainly there is a fine story to tell and it will be invaluable to those researching former members. Features Summary First accessible history of this Irish based cavalry regiment. In the proud history of Heart of Midlothian football club, one season stands out as their finest ever. Now, fifty years on from that memorable 1957/58 campaign which brought the League Championship to Gorgie, read the full inside story of how they did it and what it meant to the fans. It was without question the golden age of the club, when players like Alfie Conn Sr, Willie Bauld, Jimmy Wardhaugh, Dave Mackay and Alex Young left Rangers and Celtic trailing in their wake, scored a record number of goals in a season and won the League Championship by a huge margin. In "Hearts' Greatest Ever Season", lifelong supporter Mike Buckle brings the whole remarkable story to life and details how, after sixty-one years without a championship win, the club finally achieved their goal. For Hearts fans who remember those heady days, this is an apt and nostalgic reminder of the times. Eco returns to the Middle Ages with Baudolino - a wondrous, provocative, beguiling tale of history, myth, and invention. It is April, 1204, and Constantinople, the splendid capital of the Byzantine Empire, is being sacked and burned by the knights of the fourth Crusade. Amid the carnage and confusion, one Baudolino saves a Byzantine historian and high court official from certain death at the hands of the crusading warriors, and proceeds to tell his own fantastical story. Born a simple peasant in northern Italy, Baudolino has two major gifts - a talent for learning foreign languages and skill in telling lies. One day, when still a boy, he met a foreign commander in the woods, charming him with his quick wit and lively mind. The commander - who proves to be the emperor Frederick Barbarossa - adopts Baudolino and sends him to the university in Paris, where he makes a number of fearless, adventurous friends. Spurred on by myths and their own reveries, this merry band sets out in search of Prester John, a legendary priest-king who was said to rule over a vast kingdom in the East - a phantasmagorical land of strange creatures with eyes on their shoulders and mouths on their stomachs, of eunuchs, unicorns, and lovely maidens. As always with Eco, this abundant novel includes dazzling digressions, outrageous tricks, pages of extraordinary feeling and poetry, and vicarious reflections on our postmodern age. Baudolino is an utterly marvellous tale by the inimitable author of THE NAME OF THE ROSE.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days In 1859, the American Fur Company set out on what would then be the longest steamboat trip in North American history--a headline-making, 6,200-mile trek along the Missouri River from St. Louis to Fort Benton in present-day Montana, and back again. Steamboats West is an adventure story that navigates the rocky rapids of the upper Missouri to offer a fascinating account of travel to the raw frontier past the pale of settlement. It was a venture that extended trade deep into the Northwest and made an enormous stride in transportation. Drawing on the journals of Dr. Elias Marsh and Charles Henry Weber and the official accounts of Charles P. Chouteau and Capt. William Franklin Raynolds, who traveled aboard the steamboats "Spread Eagle "and "Chippewa," authors Lawrence H. Larsen and Barbara J. Cottrell weave together firsthand accounts of the river journey with helpful commentary. Along the way, they interject the river's environmental history and portraits of the Native peoples who lived along the upper Missouri. Marsh and Weber remark on everything from the Montana landscape to mosquitoes to Mandan villages, and Weber's never-before-published journal illustrates the recent technological changes that made their voyage possible. In the years after the Lewis and Clark expedition and before the Civil War, steamboats were crucial in establishing commercial water routes in the inland West. Larsen and Cottrell's depiction of this one celebrated ride brings steamboat transport back to life as modern, fast, and imposing--an apt symbol of the westward expansion that spawned it.
