BRAND NEW AND UNREAD. Published in Pinetown South Africa by 30 Degrees South in 2013. This is the story of the pursuit of a dream. Spitfire PK350 is the only late-mark Spitfire, an F Mk 22, to have ever been restored to full flying status. She had no restrictions on her airframe and with four fully serviceable 20mm cannons, she was as good as the day she came off the production line in July 1945 near Birmingham, England.She first flew as a restored aircraft on 29 March 1980 at the hands of one John McVicar Jack Malloch. By then a legend in his adopted country, Rhodesia, Malloch had in 1977 been entrusted by the hierarchy of the Rhodesian Air Force to restore SR64, as she was then known. In two and half years, Jack Malloch and his trusted engineers, with critical help from the Rhodesian and South African air forces, completely restored SR64 to flying condition. The fact that she was fitted with a propeller made by a German company added a sweet irony to a project that had to contend with sanctions imposed by Britain, the original country of manufacture, and highlighted the enterprising spirit of the team. This was possible because Malloch, with the backing of the Rhodesian government, had built up a successful charter airfreight company that assumed different guises, depending on where it was operating, to bypass sanctions. Malloch's network thus facilitated his quest to restore and once again fly a Spitfire such as he had flown in the RAF during the Second World War.Some fascinating insights are revealed in this account. From the test pilot who first flew her as PK350 on 25 July 1945, the reader is taken on a journey through the aircraft's complete life, with the project's lead engineer and most of the surviving pilots who flew her gracing the story with their memories. For two years PK350 delighted those fortunate enough to see her fly, mostly around Salisbury (Harare) airport. Then, on what was planned to be its last flight, Malloch's Spitfire never returned to base.

Group Captain Douglas Bader became a legend in his own lifetime. Legendary, too, are the Spitfire and the Hurricane, Britain's two most famous fighter aircraft. Bader lost both his legs in a flying accident in 1931, was invalided from the RAF in 1933, and rejoined in 1939. He rapidly became one of Britain's foremost aces and was brought down in France in 1941 and made prisoner of war. His story begins with the birth of these two great aircraft. The Spitfire and the Hurricane flew all over the world in every conceivable flying condition but their greatest contribution was during the Battle of Britain in August 1940 when they outflew the Luftwaffe and changed the course of history. This account is interlaced with Bader's own memoirs nd those of his fellow pilots. He assesses the aircraft themselves, describes his methods of fighting and recounts some memorable experiences.

FOREWORD "Carole Turner has been a fan of the Red Arrows for over a decade, and thoroughly deserves the title of "Number One Fan". I worked with the Red Arrows for four years; one year on Second Line, before moving on to First Line for three years. In 1986 we had the Far East Tour to Indonesia, and after that, travelling around Europe did not have the same appeal! Then in 1987 I met Gill Howie - she was part of a fan club who call themselves "The Friends of the Red Arrows", and later that year, through Gill I met Carole. Between the two of them, they mangaged to change my attitude to what was then "just a job" - that of flying in the backseat of a Hawk with Red 7, Flt Lt Adrian Thurley. They made me appreciate what is a once-in-a-lifetime job. How many people can say that they have flown with the Red Arrows? (Although we never flew backseat during displays). Not many! Adrian would let me fly the jet on transits between airfields, and the stories I told the girls always made them green with envy! During 1987 my skills improved to such an extent that I was regularly flying alongside Charlie McIlroy (about 15 feet away) and much closer than some of the other backseaters would dare!!! In 1988 I took Carole's handwritten manuscript to Cyprus with me where I read it while sunbathing. To me it was a compelling story; once I started, I hated having to put it down again to do something else, and was always trying to get back to it. Carole has even managed to convert the Groundcrew into fans, and once you have read the book you will become a fan of the World's best Aerobatic Team (I have seen none better in my travels!)  The War Diaries of André Dennison - JRT Wood - Ashanti - 1989 - 394pp, indexed, black and white photographs - Hard cover with dust cover in good, clean and tight condition. Another fighting soldier, Johan Meiring, Bronze Cross of Rhodesia, said about Dennison that somehow his battles seemed bigger brighter and bolder. His war was always noisier, far noisier, than the fights of other soldiers. At one stage of the Rhodesian conflict, A Company 2-RAR held the current record, notching up the largest single kill of the war, eliminating 32 of the enemy after a bloody day-long battle on Rhodesia's south-eastern border with Mozambique - But Dennison's war was largely a blunt, no frills operation. There was no glamour in the killing ground. The glamour was at home. She was his pert attractive British wife, Helen. After the failure of this, his second marriage, and her subsequent return to her aristocratic home in Britain, there were other glamorous women. There were other wars, too. Egypt, Cyprus, Aden, Borneo, The Oman and Northern Ireland. Of these he spoke as little as he did of his women. But there were unguarded moments when Dennison hinted of dark deeds. Like the elusive IRA leader holed up in his Londonderry safe house, where the frustrated SAS could not legally reach him for months on end. Then came the mysterious, never explained shotgun blast in the dark of the night, snuffing out the IRA man on his own doorstep when he answered the coded knock known only to his mistress. There was an equally inexplicable incident when the newly arrived British Commissioner designate, Field Marshall Lord Carver, flew in to meet 2-RAR. Moving down the line of officers at 2-RAR HQ in Fort Victoria, the Field Marshall paused to exchange a few words with each. Introduced to Dennison, he paused briefly but then moved on wordlessly, ignoring the outstretched hand. Dennison never spoke about it and no one thought of asking Lord Carver. Mostly he kept his thoughts to himself and wrote of the war as he had seen it. He would labour into the night over his diary, recording events while memories still jangled fresh in his mind. There were reports of large fireforce actions and of 2-RAR officers and men receiving bravery awards. And there were tersely worded Combined Operations HQ's communiquÌ©s announcing deaths in action.

The Avro Lancaster was a four-engine heavy bomber that played a crucial role in World War II, and this illustrated volume records the history of thirty-five of them, supported by stories from aircrew members.   The most famous of the bombers is “Queenie” (W5868), the only one of these Lancasters that survives, now in the Bomber Command Hall at the Royal Air Force Museum in London.                    South African Air Force Cricket Team, 1924-25, Hildick's Studios, Pretoria,  original photograph with names of cricketers on mountboard, photograph measures 36 cms x 29 cms, mount board (original backing board) measures 50.5 cms x 42.5 cms, crease to center-line affecting LHS of mountboard and photograph, suitable for framing, overall condition: good. Seated in the middle row, left, is Col.  Sir Pierre van Ryneveld,   Director of Air Services.   Sir Pierre van Ryneveld   was the founding commander of the South African Air Force (SAAF). He began his military career in World War I where he distinguished himself as a fighter ace. After the war, van Ryneveld was called back to South Africa by the Prime Minister Jan Smuts in order to set up the SAAF. He flew back home, across Africa, in a Vickers Vimy - a pioneering feat for which he was knighted. He served as CGS for sixteen years, including the whole of  World War II. Colonel van Ryneveld established the SAAF in 1920, and directed it until 1933, when he was promoted to Chief of the General Staff (CGS), in command of the Union Defence Forces. However, for the next four years the SAAF remained under van Ryneveld's direct control as no one was appointed as the Air Force's director until 1937.
