BRAND NEW AND UNREAD. Published in Pinetown South Africa by 30 Degrees South in 2013. This is the story of the pursuit of a dream. Spitfire PK350 is the only late-mark Spitfire, an F Mk 22, to have ever been restored to full flying status. She had no restrictions on her airframe and with four fully serviceable 20mm cannons, she was as good as the day she came off the production line in July 1945 near Birmingham, England. She first flew as a restored aircraft on 29 March 1980 at the hands of one John McVicar Jack Malloch. By then a legend in his adopted country, Rhodesia, Malloch had in 1977 been entrusted by the hierarchy of the Rhodesian Air Force to restore SR64, as she was then known. In two and half years, Jack Malloch and his trusted engineers, with critical help from the Rhodesian and South African air forces, completely restored SR64 to flying condition. The fact that she was fitted with a propeller made by a German company added a sweet irony to a project that had to contend with sanctions imposed by Britain, the original country of manufacture, and highlighted the enterprising spirit of the team. This was possible because Malloch, with the backing of the Rhodesian government, had built up a successful charter airfreight company that assumed different guises, depending on where it was operating, to bypass sanctions. Malloch's network thus facilitated his quest to restore and once again fly a Spitfire such as he had flown in the RAF during the Second World War.Some fascinating insights are revealed in this account. From the test pilot who first flew her as PK350 on 25 July 1945, the reader is taken on a journey through the aircraft's complete life, with the project's lead engineer and most of the surviving pilots who flew her gracing the story with their memories. For two years PK350 delighted those fortunate enough to see her fly, mostly around Salisbury (Harare) airport. Then, on what was planned to be its last flight, Malloch's Spitfire never returned to base.

Steve Joubert had always wanted to be a pilot and the only way he could afford to do so, was to join the South African Air Force in the late 1970's. As an adventurous young man with a wicked sense of humour, he tells of the many amusing escapades he had as a trainee pilot. But soon he is sent to fight in the Border War in northern Namibia (then South West Africa) where he is exposed to the carnage of war. The pilots of the Alouette helicopters were witness to some of the worst scenes of the Border War. Often, they were the first to arrive after a deadly landmine accident. In the fiercest battles their gunships regularly supplied life-saving air cover to troops on the ground. Joubert describes the horrors of war and talks openly about its impact on him, but also how he had to suppress his emotions to survive. He had several hair-raising experiences and was nearly shot down a few times. A born maverick, he became increasingly disillusioned by the war effort and by what he saw as the mindless hierarchy of the army. In essence a powerful anti-war plea, this book also aims to encourage veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder to share their stories and seek help.  About the Author: STEVE JOUBERT reported for national service at the South African Air Force Gymnasium in January 1976 to follow his childhood ambition to become an Air Force pilot. He was awarded his Pilots Wings as a member of Pupil Pilots Course 1/77. This book is primarily about the years which followed when Joubert flew Alouette III gunships in the Border War as a member of 17 Squadron. He later flew Dakota DC3s at 44 Squadron before leaving the SAAF in 1985 to pursue a business career. Steve is married to Diane. Between them they have a daughter, four sons and four granddaughters.

1973. Hard cover with dust cover; 191 pages. Very good condition; neat and clean. The dust cover is worn. Hard cover is excellent.  Under 1kg. Group Captain Douglas Bader became a legend in his own lifetime. Legendary, too, are the Spitfire and the Hurricane, Britain's two most famous fighter aircraft. Bader lost both his legs in a flying accident in 1931, was invalided from the RAF in 1933, and rejoined in 1939. He rapidly became one of Britain's foremost aces and was brought down in France in 1941 and made prisoner of war. His story begins with the birth of these two great aircraft. The Spitfire and the Hurricane flew all over the world in every conceivable flying condition but their greatest contribution was during the Battle of Britain in August 1940 when they outflew the Luftwaffe and changed the course of history. This account is interlaced with Bader's own memoirs nd those of his fellow pilots. He assesses the aircraft themselves, describes his methods of fighting and recounts some memorable experiences.

1960 first edition hardcover with dust jacket and 352 pages. Name in ink in front and some light foxing on page edges. R50 postage in SA. The man later known as Glubb Pasha"" for his work with the Arab Legions returns to an earlier period of his life---the early 1920's---to tell the story of the first use of military aircraft for internal security in history. The setting was Iraq and the rolling Bedouin desert country which makes up so much of the Middle East. The situation involved savage, murderous raids made on peaceful nomad tribes by thieving, often religious-fanatic raiding tribes. Glubb, sent to organize a defense corps against such depredations tells how the R.A.F. flew against the fleeing ""enemy"", and how it finally helped bring the situation under control. Almost more valuable however is his great attention to the Middle East itself---the politics, the religious problems, the appearance and talk of the people---garnered from his years of valuable experience there. Although not a book for a wide audience by any means, it is written with such intelligence and knowledge it will undoubtedly find its niche in the annals of historical writing. In Glubb Pasha's own story this is an earlier chapter than the 1958 publication- Solider of the Arabs (Harper).

This is the story, from New Year's Day to VE Day, 8 May 1945, of the conquest of Nazi Germany in the words of those who were there. It is the follow-up to Robin Neilland's "D-Day 1944: Voices from Normandy". The story is told in the words of ordinary people: American infantry, British paratroopers, Canadian gunners, Australian pilots, New Zealand POWs and German civilians. Neillands paints a broad picture, and tells of events from the participants viewpoint: the men who flew on the Dresden Raid or fought the battles in the Hurtgen Forest, The Bulge, the Reichwald, and at the Rhine Crossing, those who made the horrific discoveries of Belsen, Dachau, Buchenwald and Dora. He talks to those who survived the concentration camps, and to Allied POWs who lived through the Death Marches from the East. *Previous owner's stamp on half-title page; covered in clear plastic wrap.*

Following the Red Arrows - on a Wing and a Prayer - 21 Years - 2000 Displays Carole Turner Published by Newton (1989) Bumped and worn pictorial boards. Gift inscription, previous owner's name. FOREWORD "Carole Turner has been a fan of the Red Arrows for over a decade, and thoroughly deserves the title of "Number One Fan". I worked with the Red Arrows for four years; one year on Second Line, before moving on to First Line for three years. In 1986 we had the Far East Tour to Indonesia, and after that, travelling around Europe did not have the same appeal! Then in 1987 I met Gill Howie - she was part of a fan club who call themselves "The Friends of the Red Arrows", and later that year, through Gill I met Carole. Between the two of them, they mangaged to change my attitude to what was then "just a job" - that of flying in the backseat of a Hawk with Red 7, Flt Lt Adrian Thurley. They made me appreciate what is a once-in-a-lifetime job. How many people can say that they have flown with the Red Arrows? (Although we never flew backseat during displays). Not many! Adrian would let me fly the jet on transits between airfields, and the stories I told the girls always made them green with envy! During 1987 my skills improved to such an extent that I was regularly flying alongside Charlie McIlroy (about 15 feet away) and much closer than some of the other backseaters would dare!!! In 1988 I took Carole's handwritten manuscript to Cyprus with me where I read it while sunbathing. To me it was a compelling story; once I started, I hated having to put it down again to do something else, and was always trying to get back to it. Carole has even managed to convert the Groundcrew into fans, and once you have read the book you will become a fan of the World's best Aerobatic Team (I have seen none better in my travels!) THE RED ARROWS." Please check images for condition.       Conditions: Please read conditions before bidding.
