BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS x 2 = BOER WAR = NATAL WAR FORT NAPIER= NATAL = 1879 History of Fort Napier Fort Napier is situated on a hill overlooking the city of Pietermaritzburg, From the grounds of the hospital there is a glorious panoramic view of the city with historic hill in the distance such as “Swartkop” ”Foxhill” and “Signal Hill” which are intimately associated with the historic battles in which the Garrisons of Fort Napier played a part. A primitive Fort was erected in 1843 troops occupied Fort Napier till 1914.In 1918 it was handed over to union government for use as a Mental hospital. In the grounds of Fort Napier there are sealed underground tunnels, e.g. one is at the farm covered by a huge concrete block. In 1927 the hospital was opened by Dr. Willis the first Superintendent. The first patients arrived in 1928 FORT NAPIER was established on 31 August 1843 to house the garrison in Natal after being annexed by Britain. The 45th Regiment provided the first garrison and the fort was important in the Zulu and Boer Wars. Sold as seen in the images. Images form part of the description.

BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPH x 1 = BOER WAR = NATAL WAR NATAL HUSSAR'S NCO'S Copyright local History Museum Formed on 11 July 1865 the Natal Hussars came into being for the protection of the districts of Greytown, York and Noodsberg in the Natal Midlands. They were a smaller unit that their sister regiment, the Greytown Mounted Rifles, surviving a period between 1864 and 1872 when many of the smaller units of the Natal Volunteer Corps were disbanded due to austerity cuts. During this period the Hussars experienced a drop in numbers but remained an effective unit throughout. In 1866 the Natal Hussars was raised by a Major Eastwood in the same area. In 1869 the two units amalgamated under the designation of the Natal Hussars. Durban Mounted Rifles (1873/5-1888).... It was raised on the south coast of Natal, and was the parent corps of the Natal Mounted Rifles. A photograph of the Natal Hussars (later Umvoti Mounted Rifles) equipped with Snider cavalry carbines. Huge old South African flag marked 1975, 270 cm x 175 cm, material wool. Very nice, clean condition. This comes from a former prison guard at Glencoe prison (Natal) who took it down in 1994 (for obvious reasons). Pictures are of the actual item up for auction.
