BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS x 2 =  BOER WAR = NATAL WAR ZULU WAR = NATAL NATIVE CONTINGENT = 2nd PHOTO. Copyright local History Museum   he Anglo-Zulu war was fought in 1879 between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. Following Lord Carnarvon's successful introduction of Federation in Canada, it was thought that similar political effort, coupled with military campaigns, might succeed with the African kingdoms, tribal areas and Boer Republics in South Africa. In 1874, Sir Henry Bartle Frere was sent to South Africa as High Commissioner for the British Empire to bring such plans into being. Among the obstacles were the presence of the independent states of the South African Republic and the Kingdom of Zululand and its army. Frere, on his own initiative, without the approval of the British government and with the intent of instigating a war with the Zulu, had presented an ultimatum on 11 December 1878, to the Zulu king Cetshawyo with which the Zulu king could not comply, including disbanding his army and abandoning key cultural traditions.   Bartle Frere then sent Lord Chelmsford  to invade Zululand after this ultimatum was not met.  The war is notable for several particularly bloody battles, including an opening victory of the Zulu at the Battle of Isandlwana, followed by the defeat of a large Zulu army at Rorke's Drift  by a small force of British troops. The war eventually resulted in a British victory and the end of the Zulu nation's dominance of the region.   Sold as seen in the images.   BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPH =  BOER WAR = NATAL WAR   On 16 September 1864, the Alexandra Troop of the Wanganui Cavalry Volunteers was accepted for service by the New Zealand Government. The troop was named after Princess Alexandra, the Princess of Wales. The troop saw active service in the New Zealand Wars, mainly on patrolling and despatch riding duties, before being disbanded in late 1865. Reformed as the Alexandra Cavalry Volunteers, the troop guarded Wanganui during the Titokowaru campaign (1868), and took part in the Parihaka operation (1881). In 1868, Trooper William Lingard, a founding member of the Alexandra Troop, won the New Zealand Cross for rescuing a comrade under enemy fire at Titokowaru's pa at Tauranga Ika. In 1897 the unit was renamed the Alexandra Mounted Rifles. Volunteers from Alexandra Mounted Rifles served in South Africa during the Boer War, where Farrier Sergeant Major William James Hardham won the Victoria Cross at Naauwpoort, in January 1901, where he rescued a wounded comrade while under heavy enemy fire. In 1911 the unit became the 2nd (Wellington West Coast) Mounted Rifles.     Sold as seen in the images. Images form part of the description.

Hardcover with protected DJ. University of Natal Press and Killie Campbell Africana Library Durban pages inc index. Edited by Ruth Edgecombe. DJ has a couple of minor nicks to edges and some grubby marks but is now protected. Slight foxing but generally the book is in good condition with no inscriptions. (see pics below). Please feel free to ask questions.   " The rarity and interest of Bishop Colenso's First Steps of the Zulu Mission made it an obvious choice for inclusion in this Reprint Series. Colenso's fresh and perceptive observations of the Zulu kingdom and his lively day-by-day account of his journey make this a rich historical source. Different perspectives on this journey are provided in 'Three native accounts of the visit of the Bishop of Natal in September and October to Umpande, King of the Zulus', which were written by three young Zulu converts who accompanied him. Also included in this volume are some of the lesser-known and less easily accessible missionary publications of Colenso. Together with 'First Steps' they constitute a comprehensive statement of the essential ideas and beliefs that shaped the first eleven years of his life as a missionary after his consecration as first Bishop of Natal in . The usefulness of this material extends beyond the interests of the student of missionary endeavour. For here there is vital information on the early history of the Zulu kingdom under Mpande. For the historian of ideas, fascinating light is cast on the interaction of intellectual currents emanating from England, and ideas and attitudes shaped in a colonial and a traditional context. In a sense Colenso operated simultaneously in three kinds of environment: as thinker in the intellectual world of England, as Bishop in the colony of Natal and as missionary confronting the traditional world of the Zulu."   Please look at my other book listings as I am happy to combine postage should you wish to purchase more than one item. 10% discount will be given for orders of 5 or more books packaged and posted together. Hardcover with laminated boards. Written by John Laband, published by University of Natal Press, 2001. 140 pages. Tracked postage is R60.00. The Later Zulu wars of the 1880s were a last-ditch resistance to colonialism combined with bitter civil war, and their consequences proved more devastating for the Zulu people than the famous Anglo-Zulu war of 1879.  They took place at a time of changing fighting methods and tactics for both the British and the Zulu - the last time the British Army went on campaign wearing scarlet was in Zululand in 1888. This book explains the nature of the diverse Zulu, British and Boer military forces fighting in Zululand, and the ways in which the British and the Boers fostered and exploited divisions among the Zulu people in order to maintain colonial control. The author's research (supported by detailed maps) traces the complex series of wars and battles in Zululand during the 1880s. He places the campaigns in their historical context and assesses their broader significance.

The Anglo-Zulu war of 1879 was perhaps subjected to much controversy as a result of the epic Zulu victory at the battle of Isandlwana.  Lord Chelmsford, the General Officer commanding the invasion force during the war, sustained severe criticism from both journalists and parliament following his actions and conduct at Isandlwana. In 1939 and on the sixtieth anniversary of the battle, Major, the Hon Gerald French, wrote a controversial but riveting book titled 'Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu War, which is based on defending both Lord Chelmsford's actions and reputation.  The foreword to the book was written by General Sir Bindon Blood who served under Chelmsford in India and a devoted admirer. French however, had fallen into the error of selective inaccurate source material and false reports that were, at the time, specifically designed to shield Lord Chelmsford from the Isandlwana debacle and conveniently lay such blame on the shoulders of Colonel Anthony Durnford, Royal Engineers, who was present at Isandlwana.  For example, in looking for such evidence, French deliberately altered a map that showed the true disposition of the imperial defense line at the battle in order for readers to reach the conclusion that the primary course of the defeat was the retreat of the Natal Native Contingent, that opened a gap in the defense, thus allowing an unopposed Zulu advance. Brown (R. A. - Editor). The Road To Ulundi: The Watercolour Drawings of John North Crealock. Pietermaritzburg: University of Natal Press, 1969. Limited edition of 1000 of which this is No. 100. The Watercolour Drawings of John North Crealock relating to The Zulu War of 1879. "Editor's note.'John North Crealock, soldier-artist, was Lord Chelmsford's military secretary during the operations in the Eastern Cape and during the Zulu War of 1879. Crealock rode with his artist's materials in his saddle-bag and he recorded, as occasion offered, landscapes, camp sights and scenes, battlefields and military and civil personalities. Ten of the drawings sent to London with all speed possible in the days when Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift were stop-press stories, were reproduced in the Illustrated London News. Crealock's drawings are of pleasing artistic quality. Militarily, they date from an age when a substantial military force with "modern" firearms, fighting bravely to the last man, could still be overwhelmed by superior numbers fighting with equal bravery, but armed, for the most part, only with missile or stabbing assegais. But the drawings are not only of military interest, Their excellent detail has been praised by botanists, geographers and historians who recognise in them an authentic pictorial record of the Eastern Cape and Natal more than a hundred years ago. On his return to England after the Zulu War, Crealock preserved 189 of these drawings in an album which was left on his death, in the care of his regiment, the 95th Foot. The present album contains 67 of the drawings selected from those made in Natal and Zululand during the Zulu War." Unpaginated (8 pp text + 36 pp ills), frontis portrait of the artist, map, 66 colour and black + white drawings. 440x240mm Tall. Very Good. Dw edges are a bit tatty. Some light foxing present. Hardcover. (##3213)

Interest in KwaZulu-Natals battlefields especially those of the Anglo-Zulu War has soared since the film Zulu first screened in 1964, followed by Zulu Dawn in 1979 (the centenary of the Anglo-Zulu War). During the centenary, the famous battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift were made tourist-friendly by the then Natal Provincial Administration and controls were put in place by the heritage authorities to prevent relics from being plundered. Supported by effective marketing from the Battlefield Route Association and the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Tourism Authority, the battlefields have become a must-see. Indeed, Rorkes Drift has become a tourist icon. Specialist battlefield guides have been trained and are considered to be among the best in the world. New hotels and lodges have been built with battlefield tourism resulting in the creation of an estimated 7,500 permanent jobs in what is termed the Battlefield Region.  There are, of course, many more Anglo-Zulu War sites to be seen: Discovering the Battlefields will enable visitors to find them and to read an account that is not too lengthy yet has sufficient content to bring it to life. GPS co-ordinates will enable those wishing to undertake a journey of exploration. The book is also a useful training manual for prospective battlefield guides. Above all, however, the author shares his knowledge gleaned from over 50 years of researching the Anglo-Zulu War. He has blended first-hand accounts passed on from participants on both sides to subsequent generations with official or newly-researched information that has become available in recent years. It is written in a style that is neither technical nor dramatic, is extensively illustrated with photographs of personalities and places and includes comprehensive maps of all the battle sites. Paperback, 256 pages with illustrations & maps Published November 2013
