Hardcover with protected DJ. University of Natal Press and Killie Campbell Africana Library Durban pages inc index. Edited by Ruth Edgecombe. DJ has a couple of minor nicks to edges and some grubby marks but is now protected. Slight foxing but generally the book is in good condition with no inscriptions. (see pics below). Please feel free to ask questions.   " The rarity and interest of Bishop Colenso's First Steps of the Zulu Mission made it an obvious choice for inclusion in this Reprint Series. Colenso's fresh and perceptive observations of the Zulu kingdom and his lively day-by-day account of his journey make this a rich historical source. Different perspectives on this journey are provided in 'Three native accounts of the visit of the Bishop of Natal in September and October to Umpande, King of the Zulus', which were written by three young Zulu converts who accompanied him. Also included in this volume are some of the lesser-known and less easily accessible missionary publications of Colenso. Together with 'First Steps' they constitute a comprehensive statement of the essential ideas and beliefs that shaped the first eleven years of his life as a missionary after his consecration as first Bishop of Natal in . The usefulness of this material extends beyond the interests of the student of missionary endeavour. For here there is vital information on the early history of the Zulu kingdom under Mpande. For the historian of ideas, fascinating light is cast on the interaction of intellectual currents emanating from England, and ideas and attitudes shaped in a colonial and a traditional context. In a sense Colenso operated simultaneously in three kinds of environment: as thinker in the intellectual world of England, as Bishop in the colony of Natal and as missionary confronting the traditional world of the Zulu."   Please look at my other book listings as I am happy to combine postage should you wish to purchase more than one item. 10% discount will be given for orders of 5 or more books packaged and posted together. Jeremy Hall’s childhood in the white-ruled apartheid South Africa of the 1950's and ’60s was ostensibly idyllic: growing up in the farming areas of Natal, he had free rein to pander to his keen exploratory mind, yet niggling away was entrenched racism and interracial hatred. Closeted in the hallowed halls of an English-speaking high school, the revelation of the real world that followed — a world of township unrest, Afrikaner politicians issuing dire warnings of the red and black hordes massing on the borders — exploded into Hall’s psyche with his national-service call-up into the South African Defence Force (SADF), where he encountered the institutionalized hatred of the Afrikaner hierarchy for the English-speaking recruits, the  rowe, or ‘scabs’. Disillusioned and unsettled, following his SADF conscription, Hall found himself in 1976 signing on for three years with 2 Commando The Rhodesian Light Infantry as the bush war in that country erupted from a simmering, low-key insurgency into full-blown war. As a paratrooper with this crack airborne unit, he was to see continual combat on Fireforce operations and cross-border raids into Zambia and Mozambique, such as Operation Dingo, the 1977 Rhodesian attack on ZANLA’s Chimoio base.   PAPERBACK: 360 PAGES WITH PHOTOS & MAPS. Published March 2014

Brown (R. A. - Editor). The Road To Ulundi: The Watercolour Drawings of John North Crealock. Pietermaritzburg: University of Natal Press, 1969. Limited edition of 1000 of which this is No. 100. The Watercolour Drawings of John North Crealock relating to The Zulu War of 1879. "Editor's note.'John North Crealock, soldier-artist, was Lord Chelmsford's military secretary during the operations in the Eastern Cape and during the Zulu War of 1879. Crealock rode with his artist's materials in his saddle-bag and he recorded, as occasion offered, landscapes, camp sights and scenes, battlefields and military and civil personalities. Ten of the drawings sent to London with all speed possible in the days when Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift were stop-press stories, were reproduced in the Illustrated London News. Crealock's drawings are of pleasing artistic quality. Militarily, they date from an age when a substantial military force with "modern" firearms, fighting bravely to the last man, could still be overwhelmed by superior numbers fighting with equal bravery, but armed, for the most part, only with missile or stabbing assegais. But the drawings are not only of military interest, Their excellent detail has been praised by botanists, geographers and historians who recognise in them an authentic pictorial record of the Eastern Cape and Natal more than a hundred years ago. On his return to England after the Zulu War, Crealock preserved 189 of these drawings in an album which was left on his death, in the care of his regiment, the 95th Foot. The present album contains 67 of the drawings selected from those made in Natal and Zululand during the Zulu War." Unpaginated (8 pp text + 36 pp ills), frontis portrait of the artist, map, 66 colour and black + white drawings. 440x240mm Tall. Very Good. Dw edges are a bit tatty. Some light foxing present. Hardcover. (##3213)

General Ben Viljoen My Reminiscences of the Anglo-Boer War (1902) Published: Hood, Douglas & Howard, London, 1902 Edition: First Edition   Publisher's red cloth binding with black titles. Manilla Paper. No foxing, Browned edges from age. Cover stained and taped with cellotape Piece of the spine cover missing. binding with some age associated edge wear. Very light water stain to first 5 pages not affecting the type. Maps and Plates all good and clear. Would do great with a restored or new Cover.Inner pages clear with very minor browning. General Viljoen never returned to South Africa after the war as he refused to become a subject of the British Empire. In 1909 he was granted U.S. citizenship. He was familiar with both Theodore Roosevelt and Mexican Revolutionary Francisco Madero. He fought on the side of Madero at the battle of Ciudad Juarez. His book is described as being 'a realistic description of the war from a Boer perspective'.Some excerpts from Mendelssohn Vol.II: 'The author was instructed by General Joubert to proceed to the Natal frontier, and he subsequently joined the troops under General Kock's command. He does not appear to have had a high opinion of his leader, and remarks, possibly if we "had had less to do with arrogant and stupid old men, we should have reached Cape Town or Durban." From time to time he expresses his discontent with most of the Boer Generals of the old school, and he was extremely impatient of their super-caution, credulity, and superstition, which brought him on several occasions to the verge of insubordination, whilst at times he considered that he had been slighted by Joubert, who appears to have been dubious as to the courage of the leader and his Johannesburg men.' The so-called Handsuppers 'were regarded by the General as traitors, and there is an account of the "execution" of Meyer De Kock who came to Viljoen's camp to induce his men to surrender, and who, it is stated, was the first man who first suggested to the British authorities the establishment of concentration camps. The Boer General defends the blowing up of trains, which he considered quite as justifiable as the burning of houses, and was, he asserts, no doubt as distasteful to him as the latter was to Lord Kitchener.' 'He was sent to St. Helena on February 19th, and speaks with some dissatisfaction of his treatment on the island.'
