This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days Edited and richly annotated by Lt Cdr Andrew David, this volume offers for the first time a complete transcript of the handwritten log kept by William Broughton on his voyage to the North Pacific (1795-98), together with supplementary letters and the journal of Broughton's journey across Mexico. An extensive introduction by Professor Barry Gough places the voyage in its historical context. Broughton had first visited the North Pacific in 1792 in command of the brig Chatham during Vancouver's voyage. When negotiations between Vancouver and Juan Francisco Bodega y Quadra reached an impasse, Broughton was sent back to London to seek fresh instructions, travelling across Mexico and returning to Europe in Spanish ships. Back in London in July 1793 he was appointed in command of the sloop Providence with orders to rejoin Vancouver in the Pacific, taking with him the astronomer John Crosley. The outbreak of war with France delayed Broughton's departure until February 1795, with the result that, on reaching Hawaii, he learned that Vancouver had already sailed for England. After consulting with his officers, Broughton decided to cross the North Pacific and complete the surveys left unfinished by Cook's third voyage and to enable Crosley to make astronomical observations. Accordingly, Broughton made for the north coast of Honshu and proceeded to examine the southernmost of the Kurile Islands before making for Macau, examining the coasts of the Japanese Islands on the way. In Macau Broughton purchased a schooner before continuing his survey. Sadly the Providence was wrecked on an uncharted reef off the Ryukyu Islands, the crew being rescued by the schooner. Broughton returned to Macau, resumed his survey in the schooner, and in her reached the head of the Gulf of Tartary and examined part of the south coast of Korea. He ended his voyage in Macau in November 1797. "Second Voyage Dans L'Interieur De L'Afrique, Par Le Cap De Bonne Esperance, Dans Les Annees 1783, 84 et 85; Par F. LeVaillant" All three volumes of the second voyage of Francois Le Vaillant into the interior of South Africa via the Cape of Good Hope. Published in Paris by H.J. Jansen in 1795. Date of publication indicated as 'Year Three of the Republic' on the title page, as in the first three years after the French Revolution. All three volumes rebound in black pigskin. All 22 plates present. Two of the fold-out plates have a tear on one of their folds but with no loss. A circular shadow can be observed on the title pages of all three volumes but overall the contents are in good condition. Mendelssohn, volume I, pages 889, 890, & 892: 'His description is unique for this period, as little information respecting these regions had been published up to this date'. The second expedition was to Namaqualand, Damaraland, Bechcuanaland and the Kalahari Desert. It provides an interesting and early narrative of South Africa at a time when it was little known. The plates include that of a giraffe and of a hippopotamus, which were little known then, the local people, and several views.   A classic work on African travel which was a primary source for many later travelers including Adulphe Delegorgue.

Paperback. English. Publisher: Penguin Classics. 1976. 311pp Good condition in softcover. Poe found the germ of the story he would develop into ARTHUR GORDON PYM in 1836 in a newspaper account of the shipwreck and subsequent rescue of the two men on board. Published in 1838, this rousing sea adventure follows New England boy, Pym, who stows away on a whaling ship with its captain's son, Augustus. The two boys repeatedly find themselves on the brink of death or discovery and witness many terrifying events, including mutiny, cannibalism, and frantic pursuits. Poe imbued this deliberately popular tale with such allegorical richness, biblical imagery, and psychological insights that the tale has come to influence writers as various as Melville, James, Verne and Nabokov.

About the product Edited by L. A. Hewson and F. G. van der Riet. 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper maps; pp. (iv) + 106, incl. index; 2 plates. Merest trace of foxing to edges. Near-fine condition.'The Rev. John Ayliff, 1820 Settler and one of the pioneer missionaries of the Eastern Cape, left among his papers an unfinished manuscript, here published in full for the first time under the title The Journal of Harry Hastings, Albany Settler. It consists of a narrative mostly in diary form of the experiences of a young British settler of 1820 whom the writer calls"Harry Hastings": the four-month voyage from London to Algoa Bay, the trek to the settlement near Bathurst and the difficult months that followed. Harry Hastings is to be regarded not only as an alter ego of John Ayliff, but also as a typical British settler, a"rooinek"transplanted from Whitechapel to the Zuurveld. The narrative offers a lively and entertaining account of settler life, and a unique fund of information about the first years of the Albany Settlement.'

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Husband and wife William and Ellen Craft's break from slavery in 1848 was perhaps the most extraordinary in American history. Numerous newspaper reports in the United States and abroad told of how the two -- fair-skinned Ellen disguised as a white slave master and William posing as her servant -- negotiated heart-pounding brushes with discovery while fleeing Macon, Georgia, for Philadelphia and eventually Boston. No account, though, conveyed the ingenuity, daring, good fortune, and love that characterized their flight for freedom better than the couple's own version, published in 1860, a remarkable authorial accomplishment only twelve years beyond illiteracy. Now their stirring first-person narrative and Richard Blackett's excellent interpretive pieces are brought together in one volume to tell the complete story of the Crafts. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days In An Appetite for Wonder Richard Dawkins brought us his engaging memoir of the first 35 years of his life from early childhood in Africa to publication of The Selfish Gene in 1976, when he shot to fame as one of the most exciting new scientists of his generation. In Brief Candle in the Dark he continues his autobiography, following the threads that have run through the second half of his life so far and homing in on the key individuals, institutions and ideas that inspired and motivated him. He paints a vivid picture, coloured with wit, anecdote and digression, of the twenty-five postgraduate years he spent teaching at Oxford. He pays affectionate tribute to past colleagues and students, recalling the idiosyncrasies of an establishment steeped in ancient tradition and arcane ritual while also recording his respect for the profound commitment to learning and discovery that lies at its core. He invites us to share the life of a travelling scientist, from fieldwork on the Panama Canal to conferences of stratospheric eminence in exotic locations in the company of some of the most prominent of the world's scientific luminaries. And he describes his experiences with his many publishers, television producers, interviewers and partners in debate, not least in the heady period when, after publication of The God Delusion in 2006, he is dubbed the world's most outspoken and controversial atheist. Most important of all, for the first time he reviews with fresh and stimulating insights the evolving narrative of his ideas about science over the course of his highly distinguished career as thinker, teacher and writer. In Brief Candle in the Dark we are invited to enter with him a constantly stimulating world of discovery and to meet a fascinating cast of exceptional characters described by the talented pen of one of the most exceptional of them all.
