This is the first general history of the concentration camps of the Anglo-Boer or South African War in over fifty years, and the first to use in depth the very rich and extensive official documents in South African and British archives. It provides a fresh perspective on a topic that has understandably aroused huge emotions because of the great numbers of Afrikaners, especially women and children, who died in the camps. This fascinating social history overturns many of the previously held assumptions and conclusions on all sides, and is sure to stimulate debate.    Rather than viewing the camps simply as the product of the scorched-earth policies of the war, the author sets them in the larger context of colonialism at the end of the 19th century, arguing that British views on poverty, poor relief and the management of colonial societies all shaped their administration. The book also attempts to explain why the camps were so badly administered in the first place, and why reform was so slow, suggesting that divided responsibility, ignorance, political opportunism and a failure to understand the needs of such institutions all played their part.    Since the original research arose from a project on the medical history of the camps, funded by the Wellcome Trust, there is a particularly strong focus on health and medicine, looking not only at the causes of mortality in the camps, but at the ideas which shaped the culture of the doctors and nurses ministering to the Boers.    The author has also used material derived from a database of the camp registers to argue, somewhat controversially, that the camp inmates were primarily landless bywoners, rather members of the middle classes, as people like Emily Hobhouse implied, and that the rather numerous men in the camps were young and able-bodied rather than the old men suggested in the conventional literature.   PAPERBACK, 391 pages. Published June 2013

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Well Begun but Not Yet Done: Progress and Emerging Challenges for Poverty Reduction in Vietnam takes a fresh look at the lives of poor men, women, and children in contemporary Vietnam, and it explores the constraints and opportunities they face in rising out of poverty. It aims to do three things. First, it describes revisions to Vietnam's long-standing poverty monitoring system-including better data, updated welfare aggregates, and new poverty lines - to bring these more in line with current economic and social conditions. Second, it revisits the stylised facts about deprivation and poverty in Vietnam, and develops an updated profile and diagnostic of poverty using new information from the Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey and from qualitative field studies. Third, it aims to forge a consensus around the key challenges for reducing extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity over the next decade, including changing regional patterns of poverty and wealth, high and persistent poverty among ethnic minorities, rising vulnerability, and growing inequality in outcomes and opportunities. This book will be of interest to development practitioners, policy makers, researchers, and academics working on poverty reduction and social policy, both globally and in Vietnam. Features Summary This book presents the key findings from a new poverty assessment for Vietnam, led jointly by the World Bank and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS)... Condition: Good. Name of previous owner on flyleaf. Set in an unnamed African country, the book is narrated by Salim, a young man from an Indian family of traders long resident on the coast. He believes The world is what it is; men who are nothing, who allow themselves to become nothing, have no place in it. So he has taken the initiative; left the coast; acquired his own shop in a small, growing city in the continent’s remote interior and is selling sundries – little more than this and that, really – to the natives. This spot, this ‘bend in the river’, is a microcosm of post-colonial Africa at the time of Independence: a scene of chaos, violent change, warring tribes, ignorance, isolation and poverty. And from this rich landscape emerges one of the author’s most potent works – a truly moving story of historical upheaval and social breakdown. ‘Brilliant and terrifying’ -- Observer. ‘Naipaul has fashioned a work of intense imaginative force. It is a haunting creation, rich with incident and human bafflement, played out in an immense detail of landscape rendered with a poignant brilliance.’ -- Elizabeth Hardwick. ‘Always a master of fictional landscape, Naipaul here shows, in his variety of human examples and in his search for underlying social causes, a Tolstoyan spirit’ -- John Updike. About the author () V. S. Naipaul was born in Trinidad in . He went to England on a scholarship in . After four years at University College, Oxford, he began to write, and since then has followed no other profession. He has published more than twenty books of fiction and non-fiction, including Half a Life, A House for Mr Biswas, A Bend in the River and most recently The Masque of Africa, and a collection of correspondence, Letters Between a Father and Son. In he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
