 Title:  South Africa Republic 31 May 1961 Commemorative Medallion. Country: South Africa. Year: 1961. Metal: Bronze Plated Metal. Diameter: 31.5mm. Thickness: 2.5mm, smooth edge, with lug on top. Obverse: The coat of arms of the Republic of South Africa with supporters, lion crest and motto in inner circle. Wording in Afrikaans around the left and English around the right in outer circle. Lettering: EX UNITATE VIRES REPUBLIEK VAN SUID - AFRIKA REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA Engraver: South African Mint Reverse: Cape Town Castle rendered in a pentagonal shape. Date in middle of castle outline. Lettering: 31 - 5 - 1961 Engraver: South African Mint Info: Commemorative issue for the formation of the Republic of South Africa. The bronzed medal with lug was issued to all school children. It is probably the most common of all South African medals. 1961 Formation of the Republic of South Africa Silver Medallion May 31st 1961 STG silver - weighing 18.0 grams   Extract below is from a Medals website:- Form: Circular. The bronzed medal has an attached lug for suspension. By: South African Mint Date: 1961 Ref:  AM2: 355; Laidlaw: 0035; Variations: Size Metal Mass Value 31.1 mm 9ct Gold 18.3 gm $250 31.2 mm Silver 17.9 gm $30 31.1 mm Matt Bronze 14.8 gm $15 31.5 mm Bronzed Base Metal   $5 Edge: Plain.   Obverse: The coat of arms of the Republic of South Africa with supporters, lion crest and motto: “EX UNITAE VIRES”   Reverse: Cape Town Castle rendered in a pentagonal shape, interior roughened, across: “31–5–1961”.  Silver medal stamped at the foot: "(lion head) STG m (for 1960) or n (for 1961) S.A.M".   Notes: Set of three issued in a blue oblong case lined with white silk marked: "SAM" and blue velvet. Silver medal issued singly in a similar square case. The bronzed medal with lug was issued to all school children. It is probably the most common of all South African medals. Under international pressures over its apartheid policy, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth in March 1961. On 30th May Charles Robberts Swart resigned from his position as Governor-General with the result that Queen Elizabeth II ceased to be the Head of State.   Pro Patria Medal (South Africa) no.220102 The  Pro Patria Medal  is a South African military campaign medal which was instituted by the Republic in 1974. It was awarded to members of the South African Defence Force for service in an operational area, as designated by the Minister of Defence Country   South Africa Type Military campaign medal Eligibility All Ranks Awarded for 55 days continuous or 90 days non-continuous duty in an operational area Campaign(s) 1966-1989 Border War Status Discontinued in 1994   Obverse The Pro Patria Medal is an octagonal medallion, struck in bronze and gilded, to fit in a circle 38 millimetres in diameter and 3 millimetres thick at the centre, with a golden aloe emblem in the centre on a blue roundel, 22 millimetres in diameter. Reverse The  pre-1994 South African Coat of Arms  is on the reverse, with the medal number stamped underneath.
